On this week's episode of 'This and That,' we break down all of the action from the 2019 French, Spanish and Italian Nationals and give the latest updates on Evgenia Medvedeva (евгения медведева) as she prepares to compete at the Russian Figure Skating Championships.
Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron returned to form at the French Figure Skating Championships, yet it was Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres who truly stole the show with their thid standout free skate of the season.
Nicole Della Monica and Matteo Guarise won another national title, yet they displayed some inconsistency on their jumps.
Daniel Grassl landed three quads to upset Matteo Rizzo.
In Spain, Olivia Smart and Adria Diaz won the rhythm dance but were overtaken by Sara Hurtado and Kirill Khaliavin in the free dance. Spain's berth to the World Figure Skating Championships will be determined at the upcoming European Figure Skating Championships.
Evgenia Medvedeva heads to Saransk with a new short program to 'Tosca' choreographed by Misha Ge. Elizaveta Tuktamysheva will miss the event due to pneumonia and we discuss what we think it portends for the rest of her season. Mikhail Kolyada may also be out after suffering from sinus issues.

Carolina said she was going to be in the boot for just a week and as of now she's still scheduled to do some christmas shows in italy. Last month it was reported that she left Mishin and Huth and she was going to work with Tomas Verner and Manon Perron. I'm pretty sure italy needs Carolina to qualify for the world team trophy so maybe she'll do that. Love your show btw!

As far as Papadakis/Cizeron - they seem oblivious to any critique of their programs. Their stance seems to be, "I don't care what you think. We will move forward with our art in our little bubble regardless of your opinion." They don't seem snooty, but rather forge ahead like that's just the way it is. And as long as their scores soar way above the rest of the field, they'll do as they please. Actually, if their scores fall below other teams, they'll probably still do whatever they want. They seem to be in their own world with their own vision, looking neither right nor left nor outward. As a super fan of theirs, I'm just going to go along for the ride and take what they give me and relish it for what it is for as long as they allow.

Jonathan, when you sent me the pattern by the French, what it stroke me first when rewatching P/C was that they had taken a 8/8 tempo that goes CLEARLY 3-3-2 for a pattern that needs a clear first stroke every 4 beats.... thanks!

- Reading from 1964 copies of Skating magazine is why I clear my non-existent schedule to watch this once a week. - You were both discussing how you don't love the music of the free dance and I started typing something about how much I love it, and you said "what is this French Lilith Fair" and I laughed at how predictable I am to love this I sit beneath a framed original Lilith Fair painting. That being said, I prefer the second half, and think they could've only used Sunday Afternoon as it's an 8 minute song with many different levels.

Kolyada the headcase (i remember they called Verner a headcase in the Czech Republic many years ago). After the Olympics all the media have been focusing on the sport because of Evgenia - Alina rivalry AND because of Kolyada's not so good performance. Many "experts" like TAT, Yagudin, Trankov were way too blunt and gave very harsh comments back then (and later had to apologize), and journalists (of tabloids too) have turned the topic into a click bait (just like with Jenya and Canada, Alina and Eteri, and later Liza T. cos you know...she skated "naked"). They asked "experts" (that's how they always call them) up to someone like Katarina Gerboldt, imagine that, what they think about Kolyada. Turns out only half of them are skilled in diplomacy, even though, many more are aware of what happened to Gold and Wagner. Btw, during Gold's SP at Rostelecom they were blabbing about her physical shape rather than her mental state. For TAT it's the answer for everything. She once said - 'in America they can't ask a girl to lose weight". Sometimes she and others don't know where to stop and they comment on girls' weight during perfomances, so yeah, that's another topic to be blunt about. Baby-Plushenko is not really flying off the shelves. The thirsty parents drag him along but the most attention Plush has had recently is when he asked Yulia to perform in his show. With political parties it's very simple. Athletes in Russia treat sport as a full time job. So when they retire the top athletes have a lot of money and very little education. And politics is a way to find better projects to invest all that money (and for a party it's just PR). Sikharulidze and Yagudin talked about that in their interviews. There are no Nathan Chen or Debi Thomas stories (i heard Kostornaya wants to be a neuro-surgeon in the future!). And the year 2007 is connected to the political timeline (the push of liberal parties before the following elections in terms of gaining capital).

Yep Italian Nationals were in Trentino (host city of Universiade 2013) and I was shocked 😳 cause Trentino is such a pretty city but PalaGhiaccio is the only place in the city they still have Universiade branding. Random Question: Is a persistent Flutz/Lip issue - e.g., Mao, skaters who’ve done everything humanly possible to fix their technique but still can’t get the correct edge - down to pronation/supination? i.e., That a pronator (weight-bearing on the medial side of the foot) is more likely to Flutz and Flip and a supinator (weight-bearing on the lateral side of the foot) is more likely to Lip and Lutz?

I'm obsessed with '94 Pairs. Please, please do that show, it sounds like heaven. I concur with an earlier poster: I think you two are being nicer, and I dearly hope it's because you've listened to us, not because Ashley's no longer here for you to bash. I fully support your speaking your mind about your opinions and especially saying things no one else has the nerve to say. I hope Sui Han are going to come back strong! I also think they should stop trying the 3S which has been very inconsistent. Why not going for a well executed 3T (which they can do) and then « just » a combination of three doubles (e.g. 2F2T2L) which would give them 4-5 points if well executed (positive GEOs) with also the benefit of not disrupting the choreography with a fall or a ugly step out. The same would apply to the other Chinese couple.

You ( Dave ) have been notably nicer recently... I feel like we asked you to be and you listened - maybe? Whatever it is - viewer feedback, Ashley being off the GPS, etc. - I not only appreciate it but feel like it’s allowed TSL to once again become more of a vehicle for learning about the world of elite skating and not solely (though I won’t say I don’t appreciate it!) gossip. Brava! I was particularly impressed with how you handled the Rosetelecom discussion of Gracie... Deftly and delicately and compassionately while still being honest (and I agreed with your collective assessment - i.e., that beyond bravery it was simply a bad career decision and that someone on her team/in her federation might’ve tried to intervene...). Re: disordered eating... I was wondering if Meagan might wanna talk about this, given her experience with holistic nutrition and generally positive, healthy attitudes towards athletes’ eating. (Also I think I probably speak for all TSL viewers when I say that I find everything Meagan has to say to be infused with wisdom and intrigue.) I wanna know about... Well, everything, but specifically: How does one recover from disordered eating (typically achieved via Intuitive Eating) while simultaneously being required to maintain an ultra-low-body-weight for sport?
@TheSkatingLesson
@TheSkatingLesson 5 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I have changed as a person, but I do think my perspective for covering skating and others things in my life have changed. I do think I was burned out and last season, it did feel like we were at the end of the line with a number of athletes who were full of hot air. The Americans haven't been 'in the conversation' in the ladies this season and that has made it much easier to discuss. I was very annoyed and fed up with a number of individuals/things in the sport by 2017ish and have shifted my goals a tad. I am glad you are enjoying the show. I don't think I would've covered Gracie that differently had it occurred a year or two ago. I do think this is just an unfortunate situation. I know that "intuitive eating" is a buzzword (term of the moment). We can certainly ask Meagan about it. She actually turned to Veganism to lose weight and was working with Julianne Seguin when Charlie ended the partnership and claimed she wasn't in shape.
@TheSkatingLesson
@TheSkatingLesson 5 жыл бұрын
Also, the Olympic season is very difficult to cover. The level of neurotic energy from all involved in the sports (fans included) is on another level.
@JackAShepherd
@JackAShepherd 5 жыл бұрын
TheSkatingLesson Well excellent job, regardless... Really excellent content yet again. I’d be interested to know how Meagan handles that level of restriction while still maintaining a decent relationship with food; I’m a lifelong vegetarian and I could eat vegan for a week without even realizing, but once it’s a *rule* suddenly all I want it dairy and lbs creep on... Tried and true. That’s why Intuitive Eating - the book, the lifestyle, etc. - is what’s taught in ED recovery... i.e., To get back to a more “childlike” attitude about food where your eating habits all start from the belly and not from between the ears, so food is just this casual thing you live alongside instead of a demon to be conquered.
@TheSkatingLesson
@TheSkatingLesson 5 жыл бұрын
JackAShepherd then again, as a kid, I wanted to eat junk. So I think some of intuitive eating is BS. In theory, it is nice. I do think it needs a rebranding of sorts. Going back to the nicer comment, I have also had to block a lot of fans who have had boundary issues over the last few years. I had to do it today as well. There is a certain separation that has made this season more pleasant.
@JackAShepherd
@JackAShepherd 5 жыл бұрын
TheSkatingLesson LOL well Yes I think a lot of skating megafans are, ya know, tweens and teens, so that probably doesn’t help with boundaries and appropriateness :-/ Re: Intuitive Eating... Yes, true, we did all like junk as kids. But as adults I think most of us would agree that junk doesn’t make us feel our best, and it works ‘cause you become really in tune with your body and tummy and eat according to what they’re telling you rather than the feast-or-famine situation that goes on in so many of our heads (I naïvely tend to assume that guys can’t understand our distinctly female issues with weight and body image, but epidemiological studies don’t seem to support this notion). If this is something you’ve struggled with I highlyyy recommend reading/audio-reading Intuitive Eating or watching one of their lectures... The originals: Elyse Resch & Evelyn Tribole. It’s the basis for most ED recovery programs, at least in the US. It’s helped me a ton... I’m probably in the Gracie Gold phase (though I can’t do a 2Lz-2T like she did at CoR), haha, where I’m starting to come back into the world, and it’s all ‘cause of Intuitive Eating (and perhaps being a little older and wiser where I can actually put their plans into action, which I couldn’t when I was younger... I think you and I are the same age).

I feel strongly about the results. I am more than willing to have a deep dive conversation about it. We can actually use elements of the PCS and GOE to discuss the scores under 6.0!

@@TheSkatingLesson someone did an IJS video years ago but I felt it was biased towards G&G. I could write a thesis on this one but still might not come to a conclusion. Did Natasha two foot the 2A in the long, did Katia nearly face plant on the throw 2A, if M&D had better costumes and PR would it have made a difference, Scott Hamiltons "passion v perfection" BS....look out you've started something....
@TheSkatingLesson
@TheSkatingLesson 5 жыл бұрын
Linda Allison so Scott’s argument was oversimplified. Katia did pitch forward on a throw landing, but saying her face almost hit the ice is an exaggeration. The other aspects of the throw would probably have it at about +1. M/D did tend to have lower GOE on lifts, throws and SBS jumps. Sergei did have some errors on minor elements. Arthur almost lost an edge on the straight line step at the end of the program and Natalia did two foot a 2A. Both programs were wonderful. I adore them both. In the short, the majority of G and G’s elements were far beyond the rest of the field: double axels, twist, death spiral, lift (Canadians also great) and spiral sequence. It will be a fun event to revisit.

Love both programs, but I’m actually with Jonathan in that I prefer the short. I could watch the short all day, horn choreo and all. Also, I personally found Kevin’s kiss and cry banter hilarious. It’s nice to see a skater not pretend that their inflated nationals scores are actually legitimate. It was a real moment haha

About Spain dance situation I don’t think that S/D partnership has fully clicked. I like Olivia and I would love her to skate to Harry but Adri just feels flat for me in everything they skated by now. Like you do notice Olivia and that guy who’s there to lift her etc (with all my respect but sorry I feel that way) and that’s the main problem I have with those two. The other thing that I was open to like them but then Olivia became super shady on twitter and kind of rude (especially after H/K win this weekend) so I was like. Oh ho ney learn how to loose first. Also Zach 🤣behavior 13 yrs old style towards Olivia has me 😂😂😂 Adri is a Spaniard but I don’t get the Spanish vibe I would love to have from him. Especially when they skate a passion requiring dance. I was so mad seeing PCS after RD. Somehow S/D won in SS and H/K pattern was spot on and they were so much better ss and tech vise. Sara has to get those twizzles under control. But I think their partnership actually works. They are way more memorable than the other team and I Kiril gives me the impression of being much stronger male partner overall. I was first so weirded out by mashing up Harry and the Great Gig Over The Sky but it actually works.

Disappointed that Evgenia gave up on Orange Colored Sky. The failure definitely reveals a significant hole in her artistry and mental toughness. Very strange to me how a person like her who always seems to be so happy and energetic can’t portray the same on the ice yet is comfortable in heavier roles that seem so unlike her.

Jimmy Plank I just think it was too much to tackle. She had to get used to new technique and new types of programs. Which is why I think it failed. Too much at one time. I don’t honk it has to do w artistic abilities because she sold it really good a test skates.

For me it is about her artistic abilities. She can perform the program which fits to her feelings. She was full of hope during test skates and program went well. She felt stressed and frustrated in France and couldn't even make herself smile during this program and the program fell apart. It is exactly about artistic abilities - to express the mood of the program despite what's inside you
