I'm new to this channel I will tell you 98% of "reaction videos to THIS SONG is like no other) they just have to stop & they are not expecting this which is understandable. Now, yeah some people just do it and it drives me nuts, though with this song & hearing it for the first time, I give them a break, I watch every single one I can, loving some & put them in my Elvis folder of bookmarks, have one with singers I like, because the responses also fascinate me. 😊

This was a tribute to Martin Luther King after he was assassinated. He sang this to close this comeback special, he went against his manager and sponsors who didn't want him to do it and did it anyway. Elvis was trapped in Hollywood movie contracts for a decade in the 60s, he starred in over 30 movies and each movie he did a soundtrack of songs for..songs he didn't enjoy that were picked by the studio. In 68 he was sick of it and missed the live crowd and preforming so this was originally a Xmas special to show everyone he was back, Elvis was terrified to do this, that he had been forgotten. But he got out there and did this hour tv special and it was such a massive hit it became known as his "68 Comeback special" Elvis was 33 here, he died at 42.

Well said Belinda, You covered some of the exact important points I was thinking of. Was hoping you knew who along with Robert Kennedy and MLK Jr died and Elvis was incredibly heartbroken over. I know there were three he was mourning. You seen to be knowledgeable If this reactor knew the history of this song and why it meant so much to Elvis, he WOULD cry. I do not mind saying I tear up every time for around 27 years to this day. Best performance in music EVER and this was live and the final song after a long emotional and amazing show. Please watch the whole concert. I can not sing two of his songs without really losing my breath : )

Elvis was years ahead of his time. Isn't this a song that clearly belongs in today's day and age? This was the ONLY time he ever sang this song in public. He went backstage and broke down. It was an incredibly sad time in history. MLK and Bobby Kennedy's assassinations were horrific. I'm glad you enjoyed this song.

Wasn’t JFK it was his brother who was who was assassinated in 1968 Robert Kennedy …As well as Dr MLK .. He was becoming disillusioned with what the world had become in the 60s & 70s….He never sang this song again after this 68 special because it was written the night before & he believed in the song & it’s message so strongly.. My mum saw Elvis live in Vegas in 1972.. You’ve missed so many more great songs …

Elvis was drafted into the Army in 1958 and remained in the service, mostly stationed in peacetime Germany, until he returned to Hollywood in 1960. He was making feel good movies & releasing new songs, many from the movies, and his efforts always made money. But in 1964, The Beatles arrived in the USA, soon to be followed by the British Invasion. Elvis was losing relevancy in the new era. And he had only one #1 song (Crying In The Chapel, 1965) when his manager maneuvered a deal with NBC for what was supposed to be a Christmas special. It was taped in June of 1968, with an air date of December 3, 1968. Against his manager's wishes, a 33-yr-old Elvis played down the holiday aspects & made it more what he wanted to do. This song, If I Can Dream, was written for Elvis to close that occasion, as the tribute he wanted to sing to Martin Luther King, Jr (who was assassinated 2 months earlier) & Bobby Kennedy (who was assassinated during the making of this special). The entire special was a huge hit, and vaulted Elvis back into the brightest of limelights, reinvigorating his career. Over the next 9 years, he continued to build his legacy with sold out tours around the country. Sadly, he died at the way-too-young age of 42 on August 16, 1977. Forty-five years later, he remains the biggest selling solo artist EVER!!!!! Can't Help Falling In Love is probably Elvis' most beautiful song. I love his old rock-n-roll stuff, especially Jailhouse Rock. Lots more great ones to choose from! Enjoy listening!!

He came back after a long hiatus in Hollywood making 31 more or less forgettable musical films. The 1968 comeback special was a do-or-die event for Elvis and he totally did it, ending with this eternally meaningful song written just for him at his insistence. I also liked his more mature and professional look which seemed to respect the great seriousness of these lyrics and their civil rights context. Everything really came together in this incredible performance.

This is a dedication song to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who had been assassinated two months prior and Robert Kennedy who had just been killed. Elvis was deeply upset about about MLK's death. After Elvis was honorably discharged from the Army in 1960, his manager had him doing low budget comedy movies but Elvis missed touring. He wanted a way to reintroduce himself to the music world so this is where the 1968 special came. Elvis is 33 years old here. He'd die 9 years later. Elvis felt his music deep in his soul. I'm suggesting a second time - "Suspicious Minds" and "Polk Salad Annie" from 1970 in Vegas. You'll thank me.

So much pain in the 60's, so much rain . . . the assassinations of JFK, Malcolm X, MLK, RFK . . . civil unrest . . . civil rights . . . thus, the inspiration for this song. Be sure to watch the credits of the recent Elvis film starring Austin Butler. You'll hear renditions of some of Elvis' songs performed by contemporary artists. His influence on music and artists lives on.

Ahhhh very good! This gives me joy and hope for the future. Elvis was a huge supporter of the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King. If he were alive today he would be honored that you liked this song and performance. This song is a turning point for Elvis. During the 50s Elvis was it icon of the youth revolution. During the 60s Elvis was an icon of the civil rights movement. This is the song that flew in the face Of his manager of the Netwerk who aired the concert and the television sponsors who were paying for it. They told Elvis that he could not do this song because of the racial tensions going on at the time - Elvis finally won out and performed the song and it is legendary to hear it today as it was during the race riots. Sadly it still holds meaning. It’s a great message and probably the best of the social justice songs ever.

..brother, now go back and listen closely to the lyrics. Elvis was very concerned about what was going on in our country at the time, the civil unrest, the protests to the Vietnam war, the assassination of Dr King just a few miles from Elvis' home in Memphis Graceland, the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. He felt he needed to say something without making a political statement or standing in front of a press conference, his heart was aching as many were, so..as he did best, he opened his heart and expressed it in his music. He had no idea people would even watch this tv special but he took a chance to use it and it is literally one of his best performances and for alot of us fans, it is our favorite song he did. Thanks so much for your post! God Bless

Subscribed. Ya can’t get a much better a reaction to this song - Extra thumbs up for being young and getting the message. Elvis knew how to speak to young minds. What made him so different in that era is he spoke to young minds of all ethnicities. He knew the blues - he knew country music - he knew gospel - he grew up with all three and mastered them and that’s why he’s in the halls of fame of each of those genres of music. Not just rock ‘n’ roll. No other music artist not even Michael Jackson is in each Hall of Fame. And he sang about every day problems - Girls money death and taxes! Poverty, the ghetto, hunger desperation, racism, he covered those topics too. He just had that it factor that nobody else had. He had the look he had the feel He could sing he could play instruments he could dance he conducted his band on stage he arranged the instrumentations he produced the sounds.

Elvis belongs to the youth of the world. It's why he has a resurgence every 10-15 years. The younger generations will always find Elvis and I think that the internet has made it even easier as well as giving the original Elvis because he's now available to see unfiltered by anything else so they see what he was really about which leads to the moment of "getting it." I know I'll never forget the moment I finally understood why people love him so much.

Beautiful analysis of what might be the single most beautiful song ever performed on live television. Elvis was an amazing, but sadly flawed human. He loved all humans and he loved this country. And most importantly, he loved the music of African Americans and did a lot to bring attention to the cultural importance of their music. ALL musicians should be grateful for Elvis. He was THE KING.

Elvis was shattered... absolutely devastated by the assassination of MLK jr and then he was rehearsing this christmas special his Comeback Special 68 and during the rehearsals is when the news broke that RFK... Robert Kennedy ... JFK's brother had been shot... assassinated and it was the straw that broke the camel's back. He was supposed to do "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as the final song of the special but he went ahead against Col Parker's ( his manager) wishes and did this song instead to honor MLK jr and Bobby Kennedy. After he finished this song and the camera shut off he dropped to the floor and just sobbed uncontrollably. He felt things so deeply, loved and cared so immensely for his fellow humankind... for the world and all the creatures on it and beyond that it moved him to try and whatever he could to make life better for all. And keep in mind this was a LIVE performance... no editing... no autotune... just his pure voice, heart and talent. Glad you were moved by it!!

I think comparing Elvis to Michael is cool. They both had IT and a lot of comparisons in the way they made themselves unique...clothing, singing, dancing, coolness. There are lots of great performers but only a select few have IT. This song and performance is amazing! Great reaction!!

Elvis was born in 1935. His first hit song was in 1956. 21 years old. He was drafted into the army 1958-1960. He was in a tank division in Germany. Elvis then did 29 movies from 1960-1966. After acting for all those years plus the time he was stationed in Germany he had not been on a stage in front of an audience for 8 years. Hence, the success of this tv show, the performance was deemed his Comeback Special. 1970 is when he had his first Las Vegas residency.

Elvis had to stop giving live concerts because of his being drafted into the Army, then he signed a movie contract which kept him away from his fans. This was literally an all or nothing comeback special. He took back his crown with authority, and left no doubt as to who "the king" was and is. His music came from his heart and soul. This is what separates him from everyone else. There's Elvis, several steps down begins the great ones!!!

The reason you can't compare them. They are both kings. One is King of rock and the other king of pop. They sang different music and had different styles. Rest in peace Elvis and Michael.

You need to watch the Documentary "Elvis, The Searcher". The man had so much talent that was wasted. It is so sad to think what he could have done had he just been treated better.

Elvis passed away only 9 years after this. Elvis studied many religions in his life. He was always searching for something but I don't think he ever found it. He was 1 of a kind. He was the first king of rock. He also loved to sing spiritual songs. Love him.

He loved singing Gospel. He came to Jesus as a youth. The kind of fame he had caused him to lose his way, somewhat. I'm sure that Jesus held him tight, though. If you listen to his Gospel records you know that he still loved Jesus.
