I love it! Spend time reading a book to RE-TRAIN your brain to focus on a single task... So powerful as it's so COUNTER-INTUITIVE! People will argue it's a complete waste of time, but imagine what you can achieve on the LONG RUN by having a well trained high performing brain completely FOCUS on ANYTHING you do! Well done dude!

Thank you so much Thomas Frank. This is a God-send. I got this internship recently for a well-respected government tech agency, where I’m required to read through these long, jargon-heavy software engineering requirements documents. I ended up yelling at myself while driving recently because yet another day of inefficiency went by where I couldn’t focus for long. I thought to myself that I remember being able to focus a lot better in high school. “Why can’t I now?” I believe we’re close to the same age. I’m 26. So I grew up with the same experience that you did as you described. This video came out in a timely manner for me. I am sure with this knowledge I will be able to work on focusing on long-term items again. I believe that we can get better at anything with practice, and this video helped scientifically confirm for me what is going on. Have a great day, Isaiah

When I clicked on this video and saw that it was 17 minutes long, I actually decided to watch it on fullscreen. I do that every now and then when I feel too overwhelmed by the internet. It is funny that you also suggested doing that. It makes sense. I miss the times when I could focus on one thing and I didn't have to multi-task or be aware of everything that was happening in the world. I am trying to get back to such a life. I was glad that you had read and mentioned "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains". It is a great book. I am tired of being distracted all the time. I miss being fully engaged in something or reflecting on life and the universe. I always feel like I am running out of time nowadays and I am certain this is because of our minds getting distracted all the time. I used to even be afraid to turn on the wifi on my phone because I'd get bombarded by notifications. After deactivating notifications, my phone is more bearable, but still toxic. I may sound like an old person now, but I feel so sorry for the generation that may never experience boredom the way we used to before smartphones started having such a great impact on our lives.

Ideas: 1. Promote the healthy ideas that build top-down attentional control. - Read more books (NOT summaries!) - Spend time working without the Internet - Have more in-depth in-person conversations. Go out to dinner with friends more often... either keep your phone in your pocket or don't bring it at all. - Watch more movies from start to finish. Don't have your phone on you. - Commit to longer periods of time doing one thing i.e. riding a bike or playing an instrument. - Use an app to gauge the time you spend on the internet and how it's distributed i.e. RescueTime, Android's Digital Wellbeing etc. 2. Make environmental changes that make it easier to shake bad habits. - Watch KZfaq videos in full screen only. - Read articles in reader mode. - Limit using the distraction-heavy parts of the internet for a certain time of day. You can gauge this by using a website blocking app i.e. ColdTurkey, Freedom, BlockSite, Android's Digital Wellbeing. - Use tools that make social media sites less distracting i.e. News Feed Eradicator for Facebook, Buffer for Twitter - Hide visual clutter on your desktop such as bookmarks bar, extension icons, and OS taskbar 3. HAVE PATIENCE!
