I read John Robbins “diet for a new America” and was horrified how the industry treated cows, pigs and chickens, which lead me into vegetarianism. My family led the vegetarian lifestyle for about 12 years. But then our health really was affected. We started adding animal products back into our diet and it 100% changed our health. I will say we only buy our beef chicken and pork from small farms. Yes it’s more costly but the animals are raised in a humane way, which makes me feel much better.

Thank you for doing all you can for the benefit of animals. I wish more people were more aware of the sheer horror and abuse the poor animals in the meat industry are put through. I went vegetarian for almost 15 years and never suffered any health issues. I guess it all depends on the person. I now incorporate occasional tuna or salmon. Still refuse to eat any land animals. I'd rather starve.

I guess the thing is that if everyone in the United States did this there wouldn't be enough meat to meet the demands of the population. In order for people to consume the quantity of meat that they do factory farming has to exist

Perfect timing Autumn!! I have so many digestive issues and food sensitivities that I thought going vegan might eliminate them. I can’t eat soy products without having major digestive distress so I’ve been eating other plant based foods. It’s only been a few days and I’ve found that what I’m eating is not satiating enough. Then I go and eat too many dates or other carb heavy things and have already put on weight. Your timing on this subject really is perfect!! I enjoy all the meat and my body does too!! Thank you for all the facts and researching this so we don’t have to!! ❤ I’ll be having a big ‘ol chicken salad tonight! 🤩👍🏼

Great information! Thank you 🌸 I was a strict vegan for about 25+ of my 59 years but began eating fish and will occasionally eat meat (for about 10 years now). I was into strength training and used a lot of nuts and other protein sources but in the end, eating animal products like salmon, tuna, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and other fish made my body/mind happier. Sadly after about 30ish years of eating quinoa, my body started rejecting it no matter the preparation and it was a tough loss for my diet.

I eat animal-based foods at every single meal, usually eggs & turkey bacon with breakfast, some kind of chicken fajitas variety for lunch, and for dinner usually some seafood or red meat with potatoes or rice and some kind of vegetables. On days when I lift weights, I also usually include a whey protein smoothie with some milk, spinach, and pineapple. Meat provides so much nutrition and satiety. It’s excellent for weight loss. I tried to eat less meat before, but I would always end up eating way too many carbs and gain weight. Give me 4-6 ounces of meat with a small serving of carbs and a pile of veggies, and I’m full! I used to eat over 1000 calories of chips and salsa in one sitting without even getting full. Now I eat like 700 calories of meat/dairy, starch, and veggies and I feel fully satisfied. I also have returned to my ideal weight for the first time in years.

Thanks for this! I have this doctor (who’s otherwise great), but she keeps pushing vegetarianism on me, saying most of the literature/studies agree plant-based is the most healthy. She and her nurse were shocked and laughed, when I told them I ate 3 eggs every day. Even my longevity hero Dr David Sinclaire has said plant based may be best, at least longevity-wise. But then there’s plenty of studies, like those you mention here, that say the exact opposite. Nutrition science has been driving me crazy, that not even meta analysis can agree on anything! I appreciate your concise take and tend to side with you! I wish my doctor could at least acknowledge the other side :/

No offense towards vegetarians or vegans or any other people that don't consume meat, I understand your approach and you have every right not to consume meat; we all have free will. However, this whole treatment towards those consuming meat is hilarious at points. Frankly speaking, I stand against the mass production of meat, I do. However, consuming excellent quality meat sources provides the body with so many nutrients. It's why the elimination diet and carnivore diet have become the trend, for some people they are beneficial beyond margin. I am not an expert, always consult your doctor whether you must consume something or not. Without a doubt, I am a fan of a balanced approach towards nutrition and I, myself, aim some days not to consume meals with meat and not only due to religion; I just want a break. The key is to find balance and to achieve to maintain it. Thanks for the information, Autumn.

Not sure if it warrants a video but there’s a ton of Asian sauces & spicy sauces that I’d love to bung on things, just not sure if I can. I read an Australian paper about Geriatric care. Older people being at a much greater ‘falls risk’ So many people put this down to aging. In fact a lot of it is due to sedentary lifestyles, bone loss & lax muscle & muscle loss. The simple task of weight bearing each day (doesn’t have to be much) greatly increases bone formation. But……. the biggest point was that the elderly require the same amount of pure protein in their diet that a growing teenager does. Protein- the gift of good health. Sadly here in Australia we have one of the worst Aged Care systems. Dietary requirements among other important care factors are just not being met. 😢

I agree with the desirability of animal based foods, but the study at 4:42 seems flawed. I live near several communities of vegans, and they don't match the findings. I think the subjects of it don't have access to better quality foods in general. If they're eating a subsistence diet, they will naturally be muscularly weaker, and otherwise health challenged. For instance, I have metabolic issues that worsened drastically when I was on a low-cost, mostly plant based diet for financial reasons. Now that I eat mostly animal based and low carb plant based foods, my endocrine system functions much better. And if I do eat a piece of bread, the results aren't as devastating as they once were.

The subject of protein is very confusing, especially for normal people who can't easily assess how much protein has been taken in and absorbed on a meal-by-meal basis. I was interested in Christopher Gardner's research on the subject. He makes two main points: 1) protein is vital for humans, and 2) virtually every American already gets enough of it to meet their needs. See, for example, his recent extended interview with ZOE on the topic. He recounts how his colleagues are unable to find people for experiments who have inadequate protein! This stands in stark contrast to many people in the wellness community, especially the Carnivore types, who want us all to just eat bison at every ,meal and consume 200 grams of protein every day.

@@AutumnBates Thank you for the quick reply. I think Gardner's point - he is a nutrition researcher at Stanford - is that the emphasis on protein may have been overdone. Plants can provide all of the 20 amino acids that meat and fish provide, but they also provide fiber. An additional benefit is that plants don't have saturated fat, which it is easy to overdo. On the negative side, it could be that meat is more satiating. But overall, my sense is that people get too wound up about getting into their own camps (keto, vegan, etc.) and look at all the science through that narrow lens. I am not saying that you do it, but I do think that Gardner's work is worth reviewing. Thank you.

I hate to agree, because meat and dairy contribute to global warming and deforestation, but I think it's almost impossible to be completely healthy on a vegan diet. The compromise I've made is still having one meal a day with plant based protein, and the other two I focus on animal products like poultry, fish, and yogurt that don't have as bad an environmental impact as red meat and hard cheese. I've also started trying to buy as many pasture raised products as possible, since these are a lot more nutritious than factory farmed versions (plus obviously more humane for the animals). I was especially shocked by the nutritional difference between standard eggs and pasture raised eggs.

Anyhow, if someone doesn't want to eat meat because of green house gas emissions, here's a fun tidbit for you: Half of all green house gas emissions comes from one source, and when they calculate the ghg, they BANNED from counting that one source. In fact, all of the cows in united states of america, equate to one parking lot of cares, so, basically, entire world going vegan, would affect the climate change about as much as if boise, idaho, quit motor vehicles. it ain't gonna make a scratch. While the single largest source of green house gas emissions, we're not even allowed to know about, cause few ppl make too much money of it. It's american military. american military alone, that is, sans rest of america, produces more green house gases than entire country of China. Basically, we could keep our ways of life, not change a dang thing, and halve the ghg emissions, by dismantling american military, and we'd get decades of spare time to fix rest of the issues. China, which is the factory of the world, has been decreasing it's green house gas emissions in the past decades considerably, and it still hasn't made a dent. we need to get rid of american military. no one ever attacked america cause it's a world away from everybody else, yet it has somehow managed to be in permanent war since its inception. no one needs american military, and it's literally killing us all, and we're not even allowed to talk about how it does, but we're being forced to be vegans even tho it does nothing to save us

Love you, Autumn, but other than some dairy, I've been a vegetarian nearly my entire life, celebrating my 72nd year with absolutely no health issues, no medicines, no bodily issues, and no need to eat animals, 5'11" 180 pounds, and animals need not die so I can live, all meat eaters advocate meat eating by trying to say its superior, not so, eat well and live in peace 😇🙏

That’s great, I’m happy it’s worked out for you! But unfortunately not everyone’s body is able to assimilate the nutrients as well from purely plant sources as your body has. But if it’s been working for you, that’s awesome, keep doing your thing!❤️

Unless you're a breatharian or forage for fallen fruit only, animals will die to feed you. I've been a vegetarian; for me, carnivory is definitely superior.
