Clean Keto on a Budget - Target Grocery Haul (top 17 items) - Thomas DeLauer
What to Look for on Clean Keto
On the clean keto diet, you eat a fixed macronutrient breakdown of mostly healthy fats, high-quality protein in moderation, and restricted carbohydrates
You get most of your calories from healthy fats found in foods like avocados, grass-fed butter, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, and seeds.
You can also eat all of the non starchy, leafy vegetables you want, as well as other low-carb vegetables like broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, green beans, asparagus, cucumber, and zucchini
Protein in the form of grass-fed meats, pasture-raised poultry, cage-free eggs, and wild-caught fish
Dirty keto follows the same macronutrient breakdown of fats, protein, and carbs as clean keto, with one major difference: It doesn’t matter which foods those macros come from
That is to say, on the dirty keto diet, instead of choosing good fats, like wild-caught salmon, grass-fed butter, and avocado, you eat a fast-food burger (without the bun), processed cheese
This type of a keto diet is missing vital micronutrients like vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that are necessary to your overall health
Micronutrient Deficiencies
Vitamins
Vitamin E literally cuts the production of cytokines
Specifically, it has been shown to decrease lipid peroxidation and decrease the release of proinflammatory cytokines, the chemokine IL-8 and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels as well as decrease adhesion of monocytes to endothelium
The mechanisms that account for the effects of vitamin E are the inhibition of protein kinase C, 5-lipoxygenase, tyrosine-kinase as well as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX 2)
It also specifically targets, and dampens, interleukin-6 production in circulating blood
Vitamin K activates two key proteins in the body:
Osteocalcin: once activated, it carries calcium and minerals into bones and teeth - it’s mostly responsible for the dental health and osteoporosis prevention
Matrix-GLA: The non-bone and teeth benefits of Vitamin K2 are mainly tied to the action of the matrix-GLA protein - this protein is activated only in the presence of Vitamin K2
Helps avoid calcification in the arteries - helps stop calcification in the veins as well since the calcium meant for the bones is ushered into the bones and does not accumulate in veins and arteries
Vitamin K also helps prevent excess calcium in the brain, and excess dysregulated calcium in the brain accounts for some of the damage from Alzheimers
Animals grazing on vitamin K-rich cereal grasses - especially wheatgrass and alfalfa in a lush green state of growth - produce fat with the highest amounts of Activator X
Vitamin K2 levels will not be high in butter from grain-fed cows raised in confinement feedlots
Minerals
Magnesium binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors
Magnesium relaxes the muscles in the intestines, which can help to establish a smoother flow as the stool passes through the bowels
Stool Softener: Magnesium draws water into the intestines, working as an osmotic laxative
ATP must be bound to a magnesium ion in order to be biologically active - actually Mg-ATP
Enzymes
Avocado contains the enzyme lipase, which is needed in order to break down dietary fat
Yogurt and kefir are both fermented and support healthy digestion - they contain lactic acid bacteria that produces lactase, an enzyme that helps break down lactose, the milk sugar.
Inflammation - Omega-3:Omega:6 Ratio
Ideal Omega-3: Omega-6 ratio is 1:1, but most Americans have a ratio of more like 1:16

As someone who works in retail, I reallyyyyy appreciate Thomas for putting everything back in it's place. People have no idea how much time and effort it takes to set everything nice and organized just for customers to come in and take things and then leave them scattered all around the store when thet don't want it anymore. Thanks Thomas for being considerate and awsome.

I don't understand why you'd avoid some added beef fat in the organic 100% grass fed ground beef because you don't know it came from, but you're looking at full fat and non-organic parmesan or goat cheese and cottage cheese. The logic here defies me.

There's a decent amount of healthy stuff at Trader Joe's if you know what to look for, not super affordable, but moderately affordable. Their fresh and frozen organic vegetables and berries are good. There are some decent frozen wild caught shrimp and fishes. Some decent canned fishes. They have the best selection of imported raw cheese, better than WholeFoods. If you don't have problem with eating nuts, lots of raw nuts to choose from. Their extra virgin olive oil is some of the best too. I have seen their Greek EVOO bottles with pack date less than 90 days old, meaning the oil was pressed and bottled less than 3 months ago. The only thing that sucks is their meat selection, which is mostly conventional, although maybe it depends on the region.

Thanks for posting! This psychs me up for budget shopping; something I normally wish I didn't have to do. You basically said it's common to hear people say that they don't know what happens when they go to Target after they blow their budget. Then you quipped it's like they suck your soul out. My husband and I joke that our IQ's go down 10 points for every 10 minutes we're in Walmart. ;-) When the cashier asks me if I found everything, I often find myself replying, "I found more than I needed." I like your idea to have a item number limit because that's easier than trying to keep track of the dollars spent in your cart. I'm trying that out soon and I'll bundle it with my list habit. I'll count the items on my list and allow just 3 more items. Then like you did I'll eliminate items if I think I found something more worthwhile.

rsulka - He needs to keep a running total. He could have gone back for more (like those pickles!) since he was $88 below his budget. I have a grocery shopping app that I can add things to on the fly with their price if the total is important, and move things around to see what fits my money stash. Helpful when there are discounts for a certain total amount. My grocery store does that for produce sometimes.

bird271828 - You could take photos on your phone of the ingredients and nutritional info and then check out Thomas or Berg at your leisure to see if you want to buy something later. I have Berg's app and although it doesn't include the KZfaq comments, it's very searchable. A lot of stuff on the web also. I take photos of the prices in the produce dept or elsewhere for sale items because my grocery store rings things up wrong so often.... So I can just show them the dated photo if needed when I get it corrected. Nowadays, nobody thinks twice of people snapping photos with their phones. Also useful when the shelf price is too high or too low for me to see...

I would love to work at Target just for the dollar spot alone and clearance items but I've tried 3 times. Who do you have to know to get hired?

Ready to do the Keto Challenge!!! Lost eight pounds in three weeks, five more to go! Still lots of tummy fat and on upper legs. Is this the last loss of fat on the body? Can anyone share their experience with me on this matter? Ready to go on this Challenge, excited

on buying meat, red and fish like salmon.... when I find the reduced to clear section , I look for steak and salmon... I walked into local tesco 5 days ago late night and found 6 two packs of tesco finest ribeye reduced.... i was like bargain, grabed them ... then froze them, so I just defrost in fridge overnight for the day i will cook it. Saved about 8-9 euro, price per pack worked out around EUR6.20. Ribeye is never that cheap for two good pieces. So my question is does freezing the steak & salmon reduce significantly the nutrients? or any other factor i'm not thinking of for those on keto #IrishKeto

musique1o1 - And the smell of popcorn freshly popping is lovely! The taste of the store popped versions, not so much. Too salty and they don't exactly put too much effort into using good added fat. So I just enjoy the smell and don't buy it. I really like bagged Lesser Evil popcorn made with coconut oil myself, it's not doused so heavily with the extras. A little goes a long way also. But plain unadorned popcorn can be quite good if they start with good popping corn.

And use the cartwheel app when you shop at target. If you don’t have a smartphone bring your tablet with you to do the app. Target has free wi- fi. Also, believe it or not some of these same brands I can actually get cheaper at Whole Foods with their circular sales and prime discount 🤷‍♀️
