Today I begin my second dungeons and dragons series where I do a one-on-one dnd live play with ChatGpt as the dungeon master. One player dnd sounds awful but maybe that’s not the case anymore with this new technology. No dmg needed, no books no payment. Thorgan is a 5e dwarf cleric ready to save those who can't save themselves.
In session 1 we vet a party of adventurers to see if they are worthy of this cleric's aid.

I like how good the dialog was this session. Really felt like a show. I imagine if I had better deliver it would have sounded like it too. I’m excited to see how this goes.

Haha it’ll be quick. I try to keep my videos around 15-20mins. I have a newborn so the content isn’t flowing like crazy. I’m hoping it’s a quality > quantity situation for a bit while I adjust.

I got a serious stomach bug. We will see if I can get it out by Friday. If not I’ll have a different dnd video scheduled so there’s still something to watch.

Is the Arwyn voice just your voice being tweaked in FinalCut, or did you have your wife do that part of the voiceover? Either way, it *is* weird, but not in a "I am going to stop watching his videos" way. I will say it was less weird when you put the "subtitle" over your face when she was speaking. Other than that great work! I have been messing around with Chat-GPT even more because you inspired me!

1. It’s my wife lol good catch 2. Yeah I wanted to try it out and when I saw it in the edit I thought “Wow that’s off-putting” I think I’ll put the text over my mount when my character isn’t the one speaking in the future 3. That’s awesome! It’s a lot of fun and can used for so much! It’s made my dming much easier

About the voices: I don’t think you need to change anything, but if you are looking for some room for improvement I would say they are too far apart from each other. For example making the narrator a little bit less dark would help to close the gap between him and the character voices. Sometimes less is more. I wouldn’t even mind adding no voice changes at all. I can imagine that’s a lot of work in post processing and might be keeping you from creating more or longer sessions at some point. Maybe you could also consider „live sessions“ so to speak, including your reactions to ChatGPTs answers as you read them for the first time, seeing you putting your thoughts into your answers while writing them etc. Of course the videos don’t have to be literary live for that purpose. But reactions etc. are very interesting for the viewers. So interesting in fact that „reaction videos“ became it’s own thing on KZfaq. I would also like to see you experimenting a little bit with „different GM settings for ChatGPT“ like: mood, pacing, writing style (write like: „name of an author“) and more. I already tried different authors and must say it’s one of the fastest way to improve ChatGPTs descriptions. Personally I prefer the writing style of „Dean Koontz“ or „Sara Clancy“. :) To compare writing styles before using them you can create another chat window and tell ChatGPT about your goal to compare different authors and to write a certain scene for that goal, for example the characters in an RPG entering a scary forest at night. The title of every scene should be the name of the author to tell them apart later. ^^ (If you want to compare more authors later I highly recommend to edit your original prompt and add that author. Otherwise it’s not exactly the same scene in a different writing style, but a slightly different scene that fits the original description of your prompt like the characters entering a scary forest. If they are exactly(!) the same it’s much easier to really see the difference in the choice of words to describe the same things.

I love this. The live suggestion is great, I’m just waiting until (if it ever happens) I hit 1K sub. I also have some plans to include some authors I love. Which btw I just finished the Odd series for the second time. I’m also thinking of seeing if it can do combat simulation. Like lvl.18 moon Druid vs an Abolith. I’m a booger fan of the narrative aspect (it sounds like you are too) but a lot of players are in it for the combat so I wanna do something fun there too. Also good point on the voices. I was thinking I was heavy on the edit a bit.

I tried this after watching your videos and chapgpt keeps saying it can't dm or actively roleplay. Did something change? 😮

Yeah I’ve noticed it doesn’t always let you do it. I’ve had more recent success with these two prompts [You are an expert Dungeon Master with all the knowledge and skills to dungeon master a dungeons and dragons 5e campaign.(then input your campaign details)] Another is asking it what prompt it would use to successfully get ChatGpt to run a solo dnd game with it as the dm and you as the sole player. It kinda tricks it into a box where it becomes more compliant because it gave you them prompt it should follow.

What kind of prompts do you use to give specific details on your rolls and checks? Also what type of voice changer do you use? On a side note, try to prompt it with "world building" it will tend to homebrew more descriptive locations and scences based on the given information of the "story or campaign".

For rolls I always prompt it at the end of the phrase just before the roll. “I don’t think you want to do that. I say tapping my hand on the pommel of my sword [I will roll for intimidation]” or [ I want to make an intimidation check. Can you roll for me?]

For the voice modulation I just use the pitch effect on FinalCut and pitch it down a bit.

@@TBLReady For some reason it just doesn't want to provide any further information it just copies what i've told it. For example if i tell it that i rolled a intimidation and i got a 5 as i result, it will just answer "You rolled a 5 on your initimidation check". Also thanks for the info on the voice mod.

That’s odd. Try describing how you would like it to handle skill checks. [From now on, when I say I want to roll for a skill check, you set the DC. I will roll the dice and give you the total. You will then describe how I succeed or fail]

@@TBLReady This actually worked, thanks alot. P.s I will mention it again use "World building" when prompting it to narrarate a story, even better if you could prompt it to emmulate a book author or you can prompt the way it could describe a scene as dm, such at matt mercer or any other person.

So, I started my own chatgbt campaign and one thing that's happening a lot is Chatgbt forgets how my creatures I'm fighting and placement of those creatures. How are you handling it when it does that?

I’ve had the same problems. GPT4 is a little better at this but due to the nature of the program being not visual, I mainly treat combat as theatre of the mind. One thing you can do is have it “number each monster by where they fall in initiative. Make sure to track their hit points subtracting any lost hit points when damage is taken.” It seems to work for me but ends combat a little clunky. I’m still working on some better combat prompts.

Right?!?! I don’t know if I’ll ever play a character without at least running a small one shot with GPT in the future. I love roleplay and this gives so much real and full context for where a character has been. It’s also just crazy to like co-wrote a story with Ai.
