I’m just talking here. My thoughts were flying around in my head after working with a client. This is me just talking it through…
As I mentioned, some of these diseases/disorders are often seen with people who are hyper-mobile and vice versa. What I really mean is that I commonly work with people who are struggling with these disorders and they ALSO very commonly have hyper-mobility.
Working on someone with hyper mobility is completely different than working on someone without it. The way the muscles and fascia feel is totally different.
I often work with people who have searched and searched for answers for their chronic pain symptoms and often hit a dead end. Many modalities help for a period of time but they often end up back were they started, in pain.
Changing the way people stretch and switching the focus to Fascia has been a game changer for every individual I have worked with. I don’t think you can stretch your way out of pain, not the old way anyway!
I have a million more thoughts… I would love your thoughts as well! Comment below 👇 to keep the conversation going or to ask questions!
Xo Erin

Hi Erin! 64 yo male here, just found your site. I love what you are saying about shortening the muscle which I believe increases a comfortable range of motion. I have been struggling with a 'pinched nerve' which I have come to notice is a feeling of tightened muscles in the neck/shoulder area. My muscles are strong but I suspect my fascia is not happy! I have tried Spinal doctor, 3 PT companies, massage therapy, acupuncture......trying out your content now! Cheers!

Hi! EDS haver here 👋🏻 Thank you for explaining this! So would you say that Pilates isn’t a good choice for us, or is the focus on lengthening okay as long as we balance it with attention to the fascia as well?

Hello! Thank you for your question! Always double check with your doc but here are some thoughts... I think Pilates is great, but be mindful to not go to end-range. I know that with EDS, knowing where to stop is difficult. I also think, keeping the muscle lightly contracted (by telling them to contract) during movement will help to unite the fascia and muscle tissue. This helps to send messages through the nervous system to your brain and let you know what is safe and how far to go. Main thing to remember is to avoid end-range stretching. Fascia 'stretch' or activation is a great approach to bodywork and care! I hope that helps. PS. I have been working a lot with people who have ED both virtually and in person. If you would like to connect, here is my email: fasciafixmn@gmail.com Thanks! Erin

Yes! The fascia-focused movement I teach is great for those with hyper-mobility. There is NO end-range stretching!
