I like all of the comedians from that time period. Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, The Marx Brothers, the East Side Kids, and others. The comedy somehow seems more funny to me from that time period then some things I see nowadays. Such a shame.

Back in the late 70's, my grandmother and I used to watch the Stooges. She was 93 at the time, and she used to laugh and laugh. I used to laugh listening to her laugh! She loved them, and I truly believe that laughter kept her alive all those years ago. She died at the age of 99, and I miss her terribly. She knew good comedy. It's amazing that she was born BEFORE the Stooges, in the year 1882!

Two words: TALENT and TRUST! The minute they show up on the screen. You know they're going to be funny, so you laugh at pretty much everything that they say and do. You know them and you love them. I'll by saying this: Johnny Carson was going to do an impromptu sing along with Steve Lawrence and after a few seconds of Johnny's cue to sing, the audience started laughing. Johnny looked at them and said, "Now, you see? Right away! You laughed, you see? It's their attitude! They're laughing because they think I'm going to be funny!" He later tried to convince them that his intention was not to be funny, but just to sing a particular song, but that's another story. Oh, by the way, in case you're interested, the song was "Our Love Is Here To Stay!"

That reminds me of Cogsworth rescuing Lumiere from Lefou by poking sliding down the banister to poke Lefou in the butt, allowing Lumiere to torch Tom’s butt in order to rescue Plumette from being plucked apart by one of Gaston’s stooges. Curly for some reason reminds me of Gaston’s short stooge Tom, one of Gaston’s buddies. Anyways this short is pretty violent and funny at the same time

The boys never fail to make me laugh out loud. Their genius is often in the gag's setup and our anticipation of mayhem we know is soon to follow. Almost like in Hitchcock films, the audience typically sees a Stooges gag coming from a mile away - you know they are going to royally screw something up or inflict some painful injury. Yet, even though you see it coming, the setup's payoff is always hilarious and brilliantly enacted! And no doubt the sound effects optimized the impact of the visuals.
