I feel like we're experiencing a renaissance of sorts in the camera world, where a consumer or professional could feasibly choose Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, and more. Rewind the clock 10 years (or even 5!) and we really weren't so spoiled for choice. It reminds me of the film era, when there was a plethora of manufacturers, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and quirks. It's a great time to make pictures 😊.

These videos are like a nice cup of coffee. Your delivery is slower than the manic delivery of most KZfaqrs; incredibly well paced. Sipping a cup of coffee on your channel vs slamming an espresso shot with other presenters. Well done!

Completely agree with you. It's definitely one camera that's closet to my ideal camera: IBIS, 5.7 million dot EVF, ergonomic, eyeAF, weather sealing, fully touch screen LCD, 4K 60 - $2500. Now with Sigma L glass. It's better than any camera in this price range.

Wow! Spectacular! nice! Not even 45 seconds in!

I tried the S1 at CP+ today. For stills it is killer in almost all functions, snapping into focus from close (in bad light of my featureless hand) to far (a decorated tree fifteen metres in front of me) in about half the time it took the Leica SL To focus the same distance on the same subjects. But central magnification rather than the entire EVF or LCD zooming in means you can critically focus and frame at the same time, which is amazing. The buttons are in discrete wells with discrete shapes and feel where needed. And the body feels great. For video, the AF system is completely unreliable in dim light and just okay in good light.

The high prices of these new offerings combined with the high prices of the new lenses and the lack of low price alternatives, make this a scary time for one's wallet. I agree with you that these elements may indeed be unwittingly providing fuel for the smaller sensors. In the long run, full frame mirrorless will be cheap enough for the masses but that's some years away. In the meantime, we can continue to watch Indiana and his father, one of my all time favorites. Again Hugh, thanks for all your thoughts and insights.

I might just save for this camera, even though it has so many 'downsides' and unknown teething pains. I almost never shoot video, and when I do, it is on my phone for Instagram. The leica primes are all the motivation I need.

Two lovely cameras, Panasonic can be proud. Saw some very nice new feaures in the UI. Would really like to play with it, but I won't buy it, because I don't need it. Still it's nice to see Panasonic back at it.

Fantastic review! It helped me reaffirm that I will stick with my Fujifilm APS-C interchangeable lens system. The X-Pro2 suits my photography needs nearly perfectly. Wait, hold that thought as I'm lusting after the upcoming Leica Q2. This camera may free me from the burden of having to carry multiple lenses or using big, honking zooms, deliver fantastic full-frame shallow DOF with great low-light performance. And...Oh, and that splendid Summilux glass, geez, is there any current for camera GAS?

As always, appreciate your thoughts Hugh. As a backcountry landscape photographer, I am extremely excited by the S1R. I have exactly exactly three needs in a camera: # card slots, weather-proofing/resistance, and IQ. Never before has a camera come along that has checked all of these boxes. The X-T3 seems to be a close second, but with some IQ compromises. Sony has the card slots and IQ, but I would never trust one in inclement weather. I still love my G9 kit, but I have outgrown it over the last year of use. Case and point: This weekend I am doing my first group exhibition and one of my pieces is a 100MP 40"x20" panorama which I was forced to photograph at 800 ISO. The noise wasn't a concern after photomerging, but unfortunately I couldn't fully remove the splotchy magenta artifacts in the shadows. This shows under close inspection of the print. Generally, the colours out of my G9 seem a tad off, even at base ISO compared to my buddy's X-T1 (although, granted this could be how Lr is reading the RAW files). When it comes to the night sky, I have had very little success with m43 except when taking an excessive # of exposures and applying median noise reduction. Certainly nothing printable out of camera without using an f/1.4 lens or median NR. My other gripe with the G9 is (yes), the flippy screen. To tilt the screen in any direction, it has to be deployed sideways, off centre from the body. Annoying, but by no means a dealbreaker - until it broke off one day. While twisting and flipping it inwards, it leveraged against my tripod plate and broke with well under 1/2 pound of pressure. What I found inside the flippy housing was equally unsettling. While in Costa Rica this winter, my G9 took exactly one wave. Inside the housing was salt deposits caked to the plastic and around the central cable that connects the screen. Unless someone figures out how to add a rotational gasket, flippy screens cannot truly be weather-sealed to the same extent as the rest of the body. Despite these shortcomings, I would still highly recommend the G9 to most landscape photographers. I used mine frequently through -30 to -40°C weather in the Canadian Rockies and it never stopped shooting. I expect nothing less from the S1R with respect to performace in fun weather. My only worry in switching over wa the astronomical cost to put together a kit of lenses. Fortunately, after reviewing my portfolio, it turns out that, by far, my most commonly used focal lengths are ~85mm, ~50mm and ~24mm. From initial tests on the internet, the 24-105mm f/4 is extremely sharp - sharp enough to resolve 187MP images through its zoom range. One body, one lens, weathersealed, no flippy screen, two card slots, Lumix ergos, menu systems that don't make me want to pull my hair out, sufficient resolution on a single exposure, AA-free, PDAF pixel-free sensor... more than I could think to ask for, and the list goes on. Sure, it will add about 1kg to my pack, but I doubt I will be able to discern the difference between 35 and 36kg anyways :)

After seven years I've just sold my Fujifilm X gear to buy a second hand S1R and 24-105. Hold that thought! Recently I've been using a Leica M6 and darkroom printing. It fills my needs for a purer photographic experience. I also bought a Canon T90 (for £26) and really like the heft of it. It reminded me of what was lacking in smaller lighter cameras -especially when I was really working a project. If I'm going to get a digital camera out it may as well be a full monty industrial tool - or my phone. My Fuji was falling in the gap between. Crazy mistake? Time will tell. The S1R arrives next week.

Great, you did your job as a reviewer. Some reviewers are really pushing the S1 & S1R (with pre-order links right below the review), some are saying we don't need a FF version of the G9, and you are right in the middle with a sort of, "It depends on what you need" recommendation (just paraphrasing, but that's what I understood you to say, in your own, um, sesquipedalian manner). And I think that is the right answer. I have to decide for myself, based on my needs and my budget, after due diligence to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each choice. Thanks for helping to make those clear.

That was such a rollercoaster ride of elation, curiosity and ultimately a sense of freedom from G.A.S.! Unfortunately clients are often 'experts' at guessing the 'talent' of a photo/cinematographer from the size of their camera package! In a dilemma now as to whether I need a Full-frame Mirrorless with Raw video support in future or just get the Xt-30. I know I'll enjoy the small Fuji much more..

Great video and review! Incredibly well thought-out. The reviews for this camera have been pretty damn good. Bordering on giddy. Same with the Panasonic 50mm f/1.4. The L-mount version of Sigma's ART lenses should be available in about a month... We all know how well those perform... I've always thought the next worthwhile upgrade from m43 would be MF. m43 has been fantastic on the professional front but would love the extra detail and color rendering. FF for the cost and performance improvements, just doesn't offer enough IMO. m43 is just that good. The S1R is looking to change my mind regarding FF... Have a great time in my town! Thanks for your commentary, hopefully prompting insight. Great handling, and good optics (and now, superb color science) should equal a rewarding image making experience and wonderful image quality. Whether that means full-frame, M4/3, or APS-C should be beside the point.

As always, Hugh, eloquently said and with your usual cerebral take on subjects. "The real quest may instead be extracting everything we can from the journey itself...unburdened by gear." So very true. Be in the moment with whatever you have in your hands and not lament that you may only have your smartphone and not your Canon 1DX. Is that famous image from the cover of Rolling Stone of a naked John Lennon clutching Yoko taken by Leibovitz any less of a picture because it was taken with a Polaroid instant camera?

Heavy body give by itself more image stability then light cameras. Remember those Hasselblad cams equipped with the 45 degree prism and a sonnar 150? Solid an stable as a rock!

For me, these full frame Panasonics are more appealing than any other full frame mirrorless cameras on the market. At this point, the only camera that would excite me more is a small full frame Fuji (launched with a handful of small, all metal primes). Nikon/Canon/Sony/Leica- It’s not their gear... i just don’t care for how they operate, or take advantage of their customers. They feel like companies trying to milk you. There’s no love there. Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus(And Pentax, before they sold the brand)- It feels like they’re one of us, like they’re making cameras because it’s what they love to do. And that they care, and are in touch with what their customers think. They listen. They pay attention. That matters to me.

I had been waiting for the Lumix S1 as a full frame "holy grail" but in considering the price, the bulk, the weight and what seems to be lack of a major improvement regarding autofocus for video, I've decided instead (for now) on getting to know my GH5 even better and more fully appreciating it's many wonderful features.

1. Claudia said it all in one sentence. 2. Hugh’s deep thinking is refreshing and entertaining. 3. I almost ordered it...(pause for effect)...until the last 5 minutes convinced me my X-T3, GFX 50R, G9, Mavic Pro 2, iPhone, and Hero 7 can handle all situations I will ever care about. 3. I just went to WPPI today this camera the S1 is a killer (the reason for the weight is the IBIS cage support all metal. One of the tech guy gave me the IBIS part to hold quite heavy ) that is why and to place the ibis you need a large body period. Otherwise this camera as all the quality of a strong solid robust professional camera. This is a winner yes that sucker is big ... quality of images is out of this world. Your review is 100% correct. Last, the other camera I was totally surprise was the Olympus yes the $3000 4/3 what a camera the ergonomics are divine and its built like a tank, the speed is unthinkable. My last word 4/3 is here to stay.

I have a hard time finding information about the 6K/4K burst cropping info, I assume it's a bigger crop on the S1R compared to the S1? Which mean, somewhat paradoxically, the S1 might be better for sports compared to the usually higher priced S1R since you get more sensor space for quality high ISO performance. If they were a little cheaper, I might be swayed to those but I'm more curious about Sigma's Foveon coming next year. I might still come back and get the S1 later if the Sigma camera isn't a more polished with better stills AF than the SD Quattros.

It's a great time be a photographer with so many options . But I'm at a crossroads with what I want to do with my next setup. I've been learning photography with my Nikon D5000 and Canon 10D for the last seven years, and I am at a point where I am outgrowing my older gear. I'm primarily stills, landscape mainly. But I want to get more into portraiture and also dabble more in video. I want to start moving more from a hobbyist to a working professional. It's always been my dream to move into the full frame world, and I am at a point where I am ready to commit to buying a body with a trinity of preferably 2.8 glass, and slowly work on adding the primes that I may need in the future. But man o' man! My head is about to explode with what I should do! Should I stay in the crop sensor world and go with Fujifilm for roughly half the price of going full frame? Should I go with Nikon or Canon mirror less with their new glass? Should I wait and see if the DSLRs are going to drop in price and go for a D850 setup? Should I go in a completely different direction and get a Panasonic full frame? I don't know the answer, but I will keep shooting with my old cameras and soul search until I figure out what it is that I NEED, versus what I WANT. I definitely WANT and NEED to make great content that tells a story. Just venting here in Internet Land lol. Mainly asking myself these questions more than anything. Nice video and thoughts as always! I just traded my E-M1 Mk II for a G9 and the AF, even with Olympus lenses with no DFD, is lightning fast. In fact, there is enough difference between the S-AF from the E-M1 Mk II to make the G9 feel like at least a generation ahead. I expect the S series to be as good. I think in most cases debating wether or not Panasonic should go PDAF is a beating a dead horse. All new technology is "worse" in the early days. PDAF is old and tried and tested now but DFD brings something completely new to the market and it has evolved a lot since its first release. Not only this but also getting rid of PDAF on sensor improves image quality and, thanks to beind contrast detect, is actually spot on pretty much always. Faster CPU's, Ai and deep learning will put the dead horse to rest soon enough and I am confident DFD and Panasonic will soon be leaders in AF. Loving the G9, it's such a huge step up from the E-M1 Mk II in most things. The S will be just as lovely I think, just waiting a year or two before deciding to add it or not and to see where m43 is going. /Rasmus

Thanks Hugh. You've articulated most of my thinking. My biggest concern with the S1 and S1R is how well the DFD autofocus will perform with non Panasonic lenses. With the G9, GH5 & GH5S, the AF improvements with firmware were vast, but only evident with first party glass. Many people eying up the S1 & S1R will be looking towards Sigma's L mount offerings, but the potential AF hit (if Panasonic mirror their M43 policy of not DFD profiling 3rd party lenses) could hurt both Panasonic and their users. I'm still seeing a speedboosted GH5 or GH5S (with waveform monitor, flippy screen, All-I codec) as being the better option for serious video shooters, and the G9 is currently priced so competitively for stills, it seams almost churlish not to pick one up along side it. I'd still like to get my hands on the S1 and try it out, but I may have grown a little too fond of my G series trio to drop the cash on one.

I don't use Panasonics but, man, you can review stuff! That tracking is tantalizing.

The problem today is...... People are more interested in spec than the image. Take a fantastic image and show it to anyone and they probably could never distinguish what size sensor was used.....

How does the Lumix S 70-200mm f4 compare to Leica 90-280mm f2.8-4? Ideally when used with an S1R.

Loverly Camera and the Glass looks spec wise amazing. But no realistically not the camera for me. I do a lot of agricultural fairs, and outdoor's events and my other passion landscape has me trudging through the rough Aussie outback. Just thinking of that weight well let's say I recently got an X-T3 after careful consideration weighing the options it is the right tool for me. But damn would I love to try that camera and some glass to match maybe I will rent it one day for a few months to get it out of my system. Wonderful as always video. (:

Thanks for the carefully considered view as always! As a HUGE fan of the G9 (which I sold in a moment of madness), I've been looking forward to this camera since it was announced. I'd almost certainly buy one next year when prices come down and the lens selection is fleshed out... BUT I'm heavily invested in the Sony A7RIII system (which I love) and the next generation of the A7 will be upon us by then (no doubt raising the bar again) , so I feel the S1R has just come along too late, too limited and too expensive to steal away Sony users. With Sony's rate of progress, it's going to be a fascinating few years to see if the shrinking camera market can sustain so many mirrorless systems... Which is why the L-mount alliance is such a smart move to stick together and corner the premium niche of the market. I really fear for Canon and Nikon sales in 2019. Anyway, I'm hoping G9 prices take a nosedive when the S1 is released because I'll be picking another one up in a heartbeat!

Great video as usual. There are many many good things about the S1 cameras, but few issues as well: - Weight of both the body and lenses, over the top - Over-engineered lenses with way too many elements. A 50mm with 13 elements, really? why! Just like Sigma ART lenses :( - Lack of phase detect is unfortunate. Unsure why they didn't implement it. - Lack of flip-screen can be an issue for video, for some users. Can use an external monitor of course. Very good: now low-pass filter, like Fujifilm Very interesting, curious about it: it's not a BSI sensor? Uses some "aspherical microlenses", very excited to see how the signal to noise ratio performs.

Whilst I won't be buying the Panasonic S1 or S1R, I welcome the cameras into the industry and hope it does well. I also hope it gives Nikon and Canon the kick they need to improve the next generation of their mirrorless full frame camera. Which whilst not bad and in many ways good, do have their faults.

Panasonic has produced a very good camera system but it is clearly meant for deeper pockets than mine! Thanks for a very good presentation, again!

Picked up the s1r... in part to replace the a99ii, whose colors I really didn't like, and in part because it was clear fujifilm abandoned the XT line and possibly the xh line as photographic lines going forward. Panasonic has the build, ergonomics, controls and color I really like. It is a pro body in all regards and I'm glad Panasonic is separating their photographic and video lines. Smart. No comromises. If it becomes definitive there will be no more cameras on the xh line good for photography without any of that vlogger marketing gimmicks, I'll probably sell that line and go to SL - all in.

You can’t call the A6400s 4K video stellar with this amount of rolling shutter. It’s fine for talking head and try-pod stuff but I would never buy a camera that limits me so much with what I can do creatively. That being said, my main stills camera is a film Leica M5 with a Voigtländer 35mm and Canon 50mm f1.4 and a GH5s for video with a set of three Veydra T2.2 mini primes (16mm, 25mm, 50mm) and a Canon EOS M50 (with the nice Canon EF-M 22mm f2 and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EF-S I still have spare from my 650D) for family and day to day videos. Which I got new for 550€ with warranty and I’m still waiting for your review of it because I think it’s probably the best bang of the buck Canon camera out there right now. With fantastic ergonomics and feel they’ve delivered a Canon camera that isn’t artificially crippled.

after waiting months for Sony and Panasonic, I bought the Fuji X-T3 instead - frankly I couldn't be happier! especially with the 8 hour anker 28600 mah battery, the lack of moire, an overall incredible specification, 120 minutes of consecutive 30 minute rolling shutter free 4K recording without overheating, but most of all the affordable and amazing glass... waiting for the dust to settle on these mirrorless wars. also waiting for the record limit to be upped in fuji firmware...

This camera looks like a phenomenal tool, too big for my personal needs. I hope in finds a home in many pro bags around the globe. But, what I am really hanging out for is the promise of a new Sigma body. Let’s hope we see it in 2019.

This camera is out of my price range and my needs. But, Sigma will be releasing 11 Art lenses for it. So for those that are saying the lens cost is too high....

Nikon Z6 to me has the best natural color then the GH5s and Sony A7RIII and even Canon. I'm blown away with the Z6's video quality and IBIS with AF tracking. It's a contender when it comes out with 12 bit RAW and Eye AF. Very good new cameras coming out in 2019. We're going to have a lot of used A7III for sale very soon.

You could do a whole other channel for reciting Shakespeare, in a big easy chair by a crackling fire.

I could not help to notice that the Panasonic's focus joystick seems to be the first big enough and designed to be actually pressed and moved around instead of trying to lodge under the nails of our almost dislocated thumbs... (I am addressing my fellow Fuji boys...) In conjunction with the praise you give it in ergonomics and its specks, I would seriously consider investing in this system, if I ever boarded the full frame craze train.
