I have seen it so many times since it came out that I couldn't even tell you. I catch little things in it most don't that brought so much to the film. I just started reading the book. So far I like that there is more backstory for the characters.
@BethHarmon-yh8ms
@BethHarmon-yh8ms 3 ай бұрын
While it's true there is more backstory, I think the film improved on several aspects of the story. In the short story, the warden has Tommy transferred to a minimum security prison with better privileges to bribe him to keep his mouth shut about Blatch, the real killer of Andy's wife and her lover. I feel it was much more realistic and practical in the movie for the warden to have Tommy killed.....dead men tell no tales. The warden did not want to lose his golden goose (Andy). Keeping Tommy alive with a stint at a better prison when there was always the chance he could talk when he got out would have been too risky. In the short story, Andy got his secret identity from one friend who set up the whole thing for him. The film has Andy setting up the fake ID and secret accounts all on his own. At the time he did it mostly for the warden, but once he realized the warden was never going to let him walk out of Shawshank, he got the ball rolling for his escape and laying claim on the secret alias and the accounts. I kind of like that Andy in the movie really had no one but himself to rely on to get him out of the 2 decades injustice he has had to endure. In the short story Andy is sent to Shawshank in 1948 and escapes in 1975. In the film, Andy comes to Shawshank in 1947 and escapes in 1966. Andy finds out about Blatch in 1963 and gets tossed in the hole (as in the film) when he goes to the warden about it. Norton threatens him just as he does in the movie (though his motivations in the story are a bit different, he wants to keep Andy not merely to hang onto his financial pet, but also because he sees Andy as a snob and wants to keep him under his thumb to give him 'a lesson in humility). However, Andy goes on being the warden's slave for a good 12 years before finally escaping in King's story. Andy pretty much escapes soon after being released from the hole in the movie, which I like so much better. Andy had already suffered enough by this point and it would have been too much to have seen him go on being bullied and threatened, forced to keep on slaving for the warden without anything to show for it for years to come. I also prefer the film's ending. At the end of King's tale, Red sets off to find Andy in Mexico, we never actually find out if he succeeds. At the climax of the movie we see a grinning Red greeting Andy on the beach. The movie ends from afar with them embracing. Don't get me wrong, I do so enjoy King's story, but Darabont made a lot of improvements on some elements that had me saying "Huh?" on occasion.

I actually think he's a better actor than most people give him credit for. Not saying he's up there with Bogart, Fonda, Nicholson, Pacino, Hackman, etc, but he can hold his own when he has to and he just has a warm, boyish quality to him, even when he's playing not-so-good guys (such as in Arlington Road and Catch a Fire).

Kindly pause scrolling and make space for the following information in your memory banks: 1. When the prison warden found the Bible where Andy had hidden the rock hammer, it was in the book of Exodus. Exodus is a Greek word meaning "departure." 2. Red describes Andy's dream as "shitty pipe dreams". During his escape to live that dream, Andy crawls through a pipe filled with raw sewage. 3. If Andy had been incarcerated in just one cell to the left he would have had nowhere to tunnel to except the next cell, and thus would have had no amazing story to tell. 4. The three times Red meets the parole board he is told "Sit", "Sit down", and lastly "Please sit down". 5. Although it is never directly stated in the film, Brooks is in prison for allegedly murdering his wife and daughter after a losing streak at poker. 6. Despite being widely considered as one of the greatest movies of all time, it didn't receive a single Oscar win, though it was nominated for seven, including Best Picture. 7. The last word spoken in the movie is "hope", a major theme of the film.
