get a sharp razor, use some tapes on a blank piece of paper, better yet a newspaper (because newspapers are more fragile) and test things out. That was how I started out...once you are confident in how to use the blade, then proceed :)

In another life, I would love to be a conservator working for the Libray of Congress to restore and preserve historic documents....love this kind of works. My pass time fun for many years now is reading up on paper restorations and conservations...all kind of things most people that care to learn to press should know before blindly pressing books like a cuban sandwich.

hard to say to be honest....I only recommend removing tape if you can do with minimal damage to the book.
