Pro Tip: Removing Tape From a Comic Book

And you can find Bestine at your local arts and crafts store.
What I first thought may have been a water stain in this video was the Bestine moving the dirt around the white part of the paper. I don't think I've ever noticed that happening before.

Perfect video. Efficient and clear - I was able to apply the technique to removing an unnecessary piece of tape from a 1940's comic book. (Of course, I practiced on a few worthless comics to get a feel for the process.) Tip: I alternated between using a Q-Tip with Bestine and a fresh tip to carefully remove sticky residue after getting the tape off. Also a very strong light really helps to see this residue. Also, be super gentle rubbing with the Q-tips.

I tried the Bestine Solvent and I was able to remove 2 piece of tape of a comic with out damaging the paper. Unforchantly the glue stain was still there. But the comic looks way better now.

Glad it worked. I don't know any way to get rid of stains though. But it's good that it looks better!

Awesome, thanks for sharing! I just bought some guys collection and he put tape over all the staples on the comics, I’ve been trying to use a hair dryer to loosen the glue but that just makes the comics wrinkled and makes the tape removal harder, at least for older tape

Nope. I've never sent any books in CGC.

Does it leave a chemical residue? Like something that wont pass the black light test?

@@JaredOsborn let me know what you discover, i read in a previous comment that you dont send books to get graded. One thing they check for is chemical residue which they consider as "restoration" which lowers its value just as the tape would

@@lokigrimuar I'm waiting for the day when the grading companies can detect pressing. That'll be a game changer.

@@JaredOsborn they already do, it isnt considered restoration considering they offer services for pressing and light cleaning, if you use chemicals or anything foreign to the book its considered restoration. And with cgc being as backed up as they currently are they wouldnt dare shoot themselves in the foot for someone making their job easier, as long as you dont damage the book in the process

@@lokigrimuar It isn't considered restoration now. That's no guarantee it won't be considered restoration in the future. I've watched some KZfaqrs who are against pressing in general. I can see a day when some clever grading company puts "Book had been pressed" on their labels thus making unpressed slabs more desirable.

It sure does. Any kind of tape. I just removed library stickers from a used book that I bought. Those things are never meant to come off but they do with Bestine.

I am trying this for the first time and the bestine is actually removing the color from the cover. The residue is still on the book and now it is faded in that spot. Any way to prevent this?

@@JaredOsborn I think I was rubbing too hard with the q-tip. It was old stubborn library stickers

@@ThreePlyChord Ahhhh... That makes sense. I should have emphasized being gentle with the Q-Tip. Let the Bestine do its work.

@@JaredOsborn good thing I had a few “practice” books and sorta ruined them. But I figured it out then got to the GOOD book and stickers are gone! Thanks
