As a petite woman hoping to start traveling post-Covid I have been searching for a mid-sized carry-on that can be squished into overhead bins (unlike my current rolling carry-on suitcase). I don't travel with a laptop (there must be a few of us out there!) so those laptop compartments are just a nuisance, and most travel backpacks are too long in the back to fit properly. The Aeronaut 30L duffel with hand/shoulder carry and then backpack straps in a pinch would work perfectly for not-too-heavy clothing/toiletries. There's not much else out there in this category. I sincerely hope Tom Bihn does not discontinue it before I have a chance to purchase on my next trip to the US.

It seems like the Techonaut : Aeronaut as Tom Bihn’s Synik : Synapse. They kept the Synapse around, so I would imagine the Aeronaut will stick around.

The Aeronaut is one of TB's most popular bags. I seriously doubt they'll retire it but obviously I can't speak for them

@Arie Feiman I guess you're right, it's more of a psychological block to pay so much money for a product that isn't exactly what I want!

Hi Liora! Another thing to keep in mind is that many brands are having supply chain issues. Although products aren't being discontinued, they could be out of stock. If you have a friend in the U.S., you may want to place an order and send it to them. I hope you enjoy whatever you end up choosing! - Austin

@@PackHacker2 the Tom Bihn website notes the 30L Aeronaut is out of stock for the next few months, so I have some time to figure it out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Would have been more helpful to hear and see actual usage experience (does it fit under a plane seat, how does 525d nylon feel vs 1050d, etc.). This feels more like the standard walkthrough vid that everyone else does, not really like a pack hacker 2 weeks of use vid.

Tom Bihn website says the 30 can fit under seats. 45 only in overhead bins.

the Absolute Shoulder Strap is only $30, it's a great strap for the price

I have this backpack, but I refused to spend 30 dollars on a shoulder strap, I just took another one I have from another bag I wasn't using. It worked just fine.

Hey Tom, would this backpack comfortably fit someone with a 16 - 16.5' torso? Thanks for doing these bag reviews!

so damn pricey, looks like under $200 bag. But the padding and straps looks more comfy compare to PD. Anyway, hate the zippers, must be noisy and tangling. Overall good as function, also love the bottom compartment, but this bag just could be much cheaper imho.

Bag uses premium fabrics and manufactured in USA, which is probably why the cost is so high.

Exactly, if you want cheaper then by from China. I for one am grabbing this bag before the new owners manufacture overseas.

I have the Synik 30 which has a lot of external/outside pockets that are very clever and useful. However, the main compartment of the Synik 30 is actually smaller than my Recycled FF 24-hour (24L) because a lot of the external front pockets cuts into the available internal space. For traveling, two (medium) packing cubes take up the bottom to middle sections which have the most space. But because the top portion of the internal storage is more shallow than the rest of the compartment, you have less storage to work with. I've been looking at the Techonaut 30 although it really looks huge. Still debating this but it has the internal storage I'm looking for.

Over-priced. My advice is to take note of features you like and buy a cheaper bag with those features. $400 on a backpack is ridiculous

They're made in the US by skilled workers, not child slaves in China or Vietnam. You pay a premium for ethical quality goods. They're not for the Walmart crowd.
