James Garner is probably the last great western star to ride into the wild blue yonder. This makes me cry... I can't imagine what his life must have been like. Coming from a young man that grew up on old westerns, hearing of his passing gives me great pause. He was one of my fathers favorite actors, and a constant in my life, as my mother watched him grow up, as she did, as I did... He brought up a generation of anxious youngsters in the late 50's and 60's, and on into the 70's he aged with them into adulthood. There were few surprises with a man of his caliber. He held loose women tightly and shy'd away from the booze on screen, settling himself into the preferred role of "Rockford," a Private Eye before Tom Selleck; a Perry Mason in Stetson Boots. He came up from the underhanded ages of the 30's, where anything went and usually did. An enigmatic man, that wondered the streets of Hollywood as if the buildings weren't there. The last of a breed long gone. The ever matured leading man. He had been there when The Duke hadn't yet ridden off; When The Beatles were a fresh, and when Elvis was at the top of the game. A game it seemed that James Garner mastered, well, and often. He wouldn't surpass his fellow riders, but ride with them, Off into the sunset. We'll miss ya Jim! The Rockford Files was a great show. They simply don’t have that kind of talent anymore. The acting, writing, and direction hands down beats anything from TV today. It’s all liberal activism, smut, and violence.

I was a kid watching Jim Garner in “The Rockford Files” at my daddy’s knee, and I always loved him. Listening to him in this interview when he was much older, his basic humility and honesty, tempered with grit and self-assurance, reminds me a lot of Harry Truman. I miss guys like this.

"I wish somebody would have told me not to have dubbed and redubbed all of my vhs tapes just in case I would be sharing them with a zillion people." When DVDs became popular, I'm glad I didn't redub my VHS tapes to DVD and then get rid of the VHS tapes. The quality of a well recorded, high resolution VHS tape is just as good as a high quality, standard definition DVD. There's no advantage in converting VHS to DVD, unless of course you hate the hassle of fast forward and rewind.

In the mid 70s I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Garner at a Hollyweird event that I had no business attending, but I was invited, so I went. I spent 10 or so minutes talking to him & he was just as nice as he comes across on TV or in his movies. Why he spent even 30 seconds talking to a "Green As A Gourd" Georgia Farm Boy/Horse Trainer like me, I'll never know, but I'll always be grateful for his kindness. I was 6' and have no idea how tall Mr. Garner was, but he seemed like a Giant to me.

Love just about everything Jim did, from Maverick, The Americanization of Emily, to Nichols, and Victor Victoria, and beyond, but I gotta say, it was The Rockford Files that won and still holds my heart. I still like to think Jim's living in that trailer of his in the parking lot of Paradise Cove, ordering a taco or two at the concession stand by the beach, and he's wrestling w/a case that Becker's not being all that helpful with and Angel's making things even worse than it was when he looked into the case to begin with. Just an unforgettable fictional world that never got stale throughout the life of its original run. Dude must be heavy into another case 'cause he still hasn't returned any of the calls I left on his answering machine, but I'm hopeful, at some point, he will. In the meantime, where am I gonna find a P.I. who'll only charge me $200 a day plus expenses?

When Jim Garner hits Indy for the 500 he gets "the best fried chicken in the world" at a place called the Iron Skillet. Then he hits the Country Kitchen for breakfast. I don't think JG is very prententious if these are the "great places" they have in Indy to eat at that he likes. Next May I'll be hanaging out at the closest Iron Skillet to the Speedway in hopes of seeing the man. A great actor and a great race fan. Not a bad driver either.
