There are lots of recipes out there for certain tom sounds. Some are specific- tune your batter for feel and reso a major second higher. Some just recommend tuning both batter and reso to the same pitch for maximum resonance. But can you hear any of this and recognize the tuning just based on the sound? Hats off to everyone over there at sounds like a drum, the entire crew. I considered myself *pretty* good at tuning, always tuned by ear since 1999, recently got a drum dial just to be able to "save" sounds I like, but this channel has opened my eyes and ears to some things I never considered, made me re consider things I've known and generally just brought me a lot of joy. Thank you all so very much.

I found that very interesting. Personally, I like my tom’s tuned to the same pitch. While listening, I had decided that Tom number 2 was the best sounding because it seemed to have the least sustain. But I also assumed that it was tuned to an interval to create that sound, so I was surprised to find that it was actually tuned the way I like to tune. Another great episode.

I'd say your last 6 years (!!!) have made an impact on me because I knew which one was which before you revealed them at the end, though not necessarily the interval.

Wow, that was a real eye-opener! I thought the 3rd was unison tuned, but the 2nd was tuned that way. Octave interval tuning was really unexpected, and not something I would have considered doing before. Very cool, thanks for the comparison!

I thought I was nailing 'em, and was all prepared to thank you for training me to hear these things correctly... And then I experienced the agony of defeat at the end, LOL. I thought 1) Reso Higher was Same Pitch. I thought the pitch bend I heard on 2) Same Pitch was Reso Lower. And I thought 3) Reso Lower at the end was your usual Reso Higher tuning. Mind blown. Another thing that occurred to me, even before I knew I was all wrong, is that they aren't that different in context. I mean, really, who's gonna notice? Finally, you talk often about tuning for the room. I dunno how you would demo this without a huge undertaking, but I would love to learn more about how to tackle that! THANK YOU as always!

I managed to guess right by listening to how the main overtone (batter pitch) related to the fundamental pitch. 1st tuning, the overtone is around a 5th above fundamental which usually means the reso's tighter. 2nd tuning is around a 6th above, which I usually find is the interval above fundamental I reach if tuning both heads to the same pitch. When you're getting to around a 7th above fundamental like the last tuning, that tends to be a higher batter. I would have a harder time guessing correctly if there was some batter muffling going on to hide the overtone. Cool video as always! :D

Amazing, just an amazing idea. I falsely "accused" the 1st tuning in being floppy and flabby during the initial demonstration but then the 3rd one was sounding "thinner, not having enough body and resonance to my ears. The 2nd one I suspected of being tuned to the same pitch for both sides as the tone was almost free of overtones and the decay showed a slight dissonance between the heads at the same notes. Nice! I'd love to practice tuning more but have no opportunity to get new heads as often. Also, during gigs I have almost no time to mess with the tuning of the venue kit: just slight evening out of the batter side rods and that's it. 🤘😺

I think this test is made more difficult by not hearing the drums live and up close. I thought they all sounded close enough to each other to be mostly inconsequential. Based on the reveal at the end, it sounded like the higher reso was the baseline for a good, strong attack, same pitch had a sharper but plasticky attack, and lower reso had a softer attack. That would determine which tuning I use more than differences in tone at that particular pitch. Also, whether I tune the toms higher or lower influences which tuning I use, and which interval(s) I use.

During the back-to-back comparison, I “cheated” by listening to the tom’s sympathetic vibration from the snare hits. You can clearly hear a change in the tom’s batter side pitch/overtones. I see it as another factor in your tuning choice because it affects your overall snare tone. It can also affect your tuning choice based on how close you want to mic the tom; the closer the mic, the more you’ll hear the pitch of the batter head when playing the *other* drums.

I couldnt decide if 2 or 3 was unison tuning… I ended up getting all 3 as wrong as humanly possible! My pathetic excuse is that I have very little experience with single ply heads on tom batters. I tried the Strata heads once and I put dents in all of them within an hour… means I had them tuned too low I know I know. GREAT video guys!!

I could recognise the high reso by the rising pitch at the end of the sustain. But the other two I was unsure about. While listening I found the equal pitch heads sounding kind of boxy compared to the rest.

I do think that the basket-mounted tom greatly shortens the sustain of taht drum, even if you have the foam inserts on the arms. So that it’s hard to hear much differnce between the effect of the bottom head tensioning, because it is having its potential sustain cut short for all three tensions.

PS - I have a Pearl Master Custom snare I bought new in 1998 and absolutely love it!

We've compared the sonic impact of mounting via the Optimount vs. snare basket and it made no noticeable difference. Also, since the mounting variable doesn't change throughout the experiment, there's really. nothing to worry about on that end for the sake of this episode.

@@SoundsLikeADrum ok. It would be interesting to perhaps hear a different drum then, with a noticeable sustain. That drum seems to decay quite quickly.

Fantastic video! I did guess correctly, but it was a guess. Option 2 was the only one I was confident about. I don't know if you captured those sounds with a room mic, but I would love to hear the same samples from a distance. My intuition tells me the difference in those intervals would be even more apparent from 20 feet away.

Well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad, is it? ;-D I got example 1. right, but I was certain that in example 3. they were tuned the same, and therefore, by process of elimination 2. was a higher batter. Great work guys! I have learned a great deal by watching your videos. Thank you!

as a jazz drummer that tunes relatively high and tight, i tune the reso a 4th below the batter- rack: f batter, c reso; floor: bb batter, f reso. ive found that this allows the overtones of the batter head to align with the fundamental pitch of the tom, you might wanna try it and see if it allows the tom to sing/speak any differently

For bop tuning I start there but then i fine tune the reso to tune the overtone to the same note as the combined pitch.

This was interesting. I correctly guessed each example with headphones...I use the first one with 3rd higher resolution mostly for jazz and Latin. Rock suits equal at medium to low pitch but like you say each situation or playing space is different. Thanks for showing us many different approaches and growing our ears!

I have 2 mounted toms for my kit which is a very old but 1970's ish vintage 'Thunder'. A 12 and 13 inch pair. I have to keep the two tuned/tensioned about medium low. Otherwise, if tuned/tensioned higher; their resonances rattle the snares at an annoying level. Any suggestions?.

My impression was first one reso higher, second one reso lower und third on about equal, without knowing the answer.

Very surprised by the results. We clearly hear a doppler effect going down with the second example and it's the one with the heads equal?! I always tuned equally to avoid hearing this effect and with success. Bizarre.

Really interesting video! I could pick the first example fairly easily, because I tune my toms with a higher reso, as it suits my drum room and personal preference.The other two I also guessed, I thought one was equal, and the other had a higher batter, however, the intervals between #1 and # 3, I didn't know... the interval/step stuff confuses me. Great video, as always, informative, and provides options to consider. Thank you.

I liked 1 and 3. The drums seemed to sing more when both heads were tuned to different pitches.

I mixed up 1+2....hmmm.But as a fan and user of single tension toms,and snare drums,i mostly play both heads at the same tension anyway.What i would like to know is how much of ' good sound ' is lost by the lugs,the extra mass,the force to the shell,compared to a single tension system,were the shell can freely do,what a shell is supposed to do in first place.....Pearl free floaters,sleishman from australia or the welch tuning system you once had in the show.
