It isn't uncommon for wood siding to expand and contract causing it to create gaps and cracks that lead to some type of damage. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you can buy premium lumber and have it installed by experts, but if it isn't maintained regularly then you could end up with problems like the one shown in this video.

Thank you. I've been painting/working on my home that has Redwood tongue and groove siding for years. It never ends . You are absolutely correct about the need to maintain your home. No matter how good of a job you do painting, siding always expands and contracts and if you don't repair those gaps with caulking , primer and/or painting water will get in resulting in even more work!

Tongue and groove Redwood siding looks nice, but doesn't seem to be the best siding. I have a small section on our house also.

Thanks for making this video. Helps me understand why I have leaks on a wall with this type of siding. Time for some maintenance.

I would always install vertical strips under this type of siding for a rain screen. It solves a lot of the possible moisture issues.

Ttf Web he means that he installs furing strips to provide an air gap between the siding and the wall.

We moved a 1908 house with a rain screen installed on it and old-growth doug fir horizontal lap. Whoever built it was before their time in terms of building technology. I'm in western Oregon. No rot except a bit at the corner boards and at some of the windows. We scraped and pressure washed the paint - one coat of barn red - most of it was still in really good shape. Oregon building code: To promote building durability, the exterior wall envelope shall be installed in a manner that water that enters the assembly can drain to the exterior. The envelope shall consist of an exterior veneer, a water-resistive barrier as required in R703.2, a minimum 1/8 inch (3 mm) space between the water-resistive barrier and the exterior veneer, and integrated flashings as required in R703.8. The required space shall be formed by the use of any non-corrodible furring strip, drainage mat or drainage board. The envelope shall provide proper integration of flashings with the water-resistive barrier, the space provided and the exterior veneer. These components, in conjunction, shall provide a means of draining in water that enters the assembly to the exterior.

Brilliant job pointing out the problem. Incredibly well done in that area. But the title says "Maintenance Tips." Stress on the word "tips." Did I miss the tips? Or was the tip, "Do maintenance?"

Thanks for the video, this was helpful for me. I’ve been having problems with water coming though my garage siding (t&g). No paper underneath wood. Could I put tyvek over siding then vinyl over top of that? I’ve painted/caulked, but water still makes it through.

Yes, you might be better off installing new siding over the old and I would simply check with the manufacturer to see what steps are required when installing vinyl siding over existing tongue and groove siding.

a question? leave an opening of 3/16 because the woods are not match , but I put a lot of Caulking, work?

My cabin is tongue and groove wood car siding. I have some damage that needs filler. Deep scratches, cracks, damage from old paint escaping, holes, etc. What do you recommend? Auto Bondo? Does anyone have a link to patching this type of T & G sliding?

Keep in mind that lumber expands and contracts, often creating problems for fillers that won't be expanding or contracting. I've seen bondo fall out of knot holes and wood fillers shrink or give the illusion of shrinking as wood expands. I won't be much help with this one.
