NOTE: STAY SHARP GUIDE just released a new sharpener, designed especially for these heads--here is the link: l.facebook.com...
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
Tooth of the Arrow XL Solid 125 gr Score:87.35 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 15 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 16.87 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.38" = 6.65 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.38" = 6.5 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.19" = 3.57 pts)
3. Sharpness (20%, 17.38 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 325 grams = 8.5 = 7.88 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +50 grams = 9 = 8.1 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7...
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (100S/125S: 7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 17.1 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7"= 7 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score. (63 layers = 8.1 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This is for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 20 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10=12 pts)
If a head survives, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (10/10=5 pts)
If a head survives, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (100S/125S: 10/10=3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads are rewarded bonus pts for special, intangible features like: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, etc.
+1 huge, square holes
Total Cumulative Score: 87.35 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
Price: $16.66/head or $14.16/head using LUSK19 Discount Code
In addition the Overall Numerical Score each head will also receive a LUSK GRADE in 0-10 Golden Arrows as follows:
90-10 =10 Golden Arrows
85-90 = 9 Golden Arrows
80-85 = 8 Golden Arrows
70-80 = 7 Golden Arrows
60-70 = 6 Golden Arrows

I just bought two packs of these with the sharpener a couple months ago. I am absolutely excited to hunt with these they fly just like my field points. Extremely sharp and durable I couldn't be happier. I bought them because of previous videos you have done on tooth of the arrow. I am a machinist tool and die maker. One piece of solid steel makes sense to me. I highly recommend these broadheads. Thank you for making these videos by the way. I look forward to them. I also want to thank you for the promo code. My purchase was $140 and it came out to about $115ish. Which included six broad heads and the sharpener, seems like a great deal to me.

I have, just today, confirmed the Cinder block results. Wasn't on purpose, though. Pulled a shot off the edge of my target with my Hoyt RX4 and into a rock wall behind. Slight off axis hit, but the wall was Granite stone. Bounced slightly left 3 ft on the impact. Rolled the tip just enough to feel, and one blade had edge chatter. Still spun true, and flew true afterwards. Might lose a grain or 2 sharpening that blade, but still in the quiver... kudos to TOA! Wouldn't say they are "bullet proof", but highly "bullet resistant"...

Was wondering when you’d test these and you didn’t disappoint. I received a pack of these a few weeks ago but haven’t had a chance to shoot them yet. Was impressed by the vented 125 XL last year so have high hopes for these solids. As others have mentioned, accuracy did not look very impressive. Will be interesting to see how these shoot from my setup vs the vented. Another great test and video though. Keep up the great work!

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Understandable. Glad you don't cherry-pick groups and actually show real world results. Obviously going to be tradeoffs in any head design. In general, larger or solid blades = less forgiving than smaller or vented. Plus, just one data point. Any head has the possibility to fly better/worse from the next guy's bow depending on tune and form. I had issues last year with Iron Will wides in the wind so based on your vids kept a mixed quiver of the TOTA 125 XL vented and Exodus since I just bought one pack of each, practiced with 1 and put the other 2 from each pack in the quiver. Both of those shot right together with my fieldpoints out to 40 and shot way better than the Iron Wills for me. Maybe this weekend I'll get out and try my new solid XLs to see for myself.

I'm loving the solids. The 1" solid 125 is the best flying fixed blade I've found. My first shot at 60 yards with it was dead on and I actually hit a blade with the field point I shot second. Sorry to hear that. The XLs have a significant amount of surface area, compared to those other heads. They group well for me out to 40 or so, but can get pretty touchy after that. If they’re missing that bad under 40 yds, then it’s likely a bow tuning issue.

John, I greatly enjoy your broadhead test videos. I thought I would make a suggestion on the accuracy test. Perhaps you could shoot orange fletched arrows and green fletched arrows, three orange field points and two broadheads on the green fletched arrows. Shoot a field point then a broad head then a field point then I brought head then a field point to give more comparison of accuracy. I do not doubt your shooting ability but shooting three field points and two broadheads would definitely show any inconsistencies a little better. Keep up the great work!

I suspect broadhead design can affect the amount of arrow shaft pinch/friction, in different types of target medium, in a way, that may not translate to what occurs when a broadhead/arrow penetrates animal tissue. Still impressive none the less. Also, in a target medium, there is no deflection. When a broadhead's cutting edge clips the edge of a bone or even a soft rib, heavier resistance on that side of the broadhead will deflect the broadhead in the opposite direction away from the bone. If you compare three different types of traditional style broadheads in 2, 3, and 4 blade, this is where a 2 blade shines in penetration. When deflection occurs, unlike a 3 blade, or a 4 blade, where the deflection pushes the SIDES of the OTHER BLADES against the side of the wound channel, in a 2 blade, deflection pushes the CUTTING EDGE of the OTHER BLADE of the broadhead into tissue on the opposite side of the wound channel. Thanks for the review. Tough built head.

A 2 blade is more likely to deflect and take off in a new direction. The other blades in a 3 or 4 blade will keep going in the original direction better due to the side pressure on the blade surface.

For a woman pulling 45 lbs, Illinois whitetail, would you recommend this brand head or the Exodus?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
For that set up, I would recommend either the Exodus or the Tooth of the Arrow 1". That 1" model is one of the best penetrating heads on the market and still makes a nice hole.

The 1" would be more accurate, especially at those speeds.
