The reason "It's a Wonderful Life" is such a treasured classic nowadays is because when it originally was released, it flopped so hard that after 20 some-odd years later, when the rights to the film became available, nobody wanted to purchase it; thus it went into the public domain. As a result of this, many low budget local television networks began airing it late night, around the holidays, to fill airtime without having to pay anything. Families looking for something to watch on TV, during a time where most people had 3 or 4 channels, began tuning in to this movie; and because it was always on around the holidays, it turned into a beloved annual tradition.

I knew nothing about The Golden Compass. It felt like a cash grab at the time because epic&fantasy films where hyped up because of Lord of the Rings . Why would I care about an armored polar bear.

It also had atheist themes in the book but the studio tried to minimize which makes you wonder why the made the film at all.

8:22 - 'The Golden Compass' 180 million dollar budget, 372 million dollar gross. That is not a box office bomb (although I think it should have been). That was just business people making bad business decisions.

that could be a bomb. you never know their true budget with marketing and stuff factored in barely breaking even with the publicly released figures means it most likely bombed if you consider their private behind the scenes finances too

They explained why it flopped. New Line Cinema sold the rights internationally in order to raise money for the film. The film had $302,127,136 worldwide and they didn’t get of it. They only got 70 million the film made domestically. New Line cinema sold the rights internationally it made impossible for them to make a profit

the golden compass failed because the people that read the books noticed all the content that made them good was missing. the reason they were written to begin with. to be anti christian. which made religious people mad. which was the point. which scared the movie studio into appeasing christian groups by removing the anti christian content. which cost them dearly. and they deserved it.

Another thing that hurt Titan AE was that at the time, Fox was having a dispute with one of the big theater chains (I forget which one, not Regal or AMC, but they were partially owned by Paramount). That chain would only show a limited number of Fox releases each year. That summer, some markets got Titan AE, others got Big Momma's House. Fox did a big advertising push for Titan, but the film's limited availability in places did nothing to help its numbers. Big Momma's House, on the other hand, did quite well. I like Geena Davis, but it think Cutthroat Island would have faired a little better in the hands of another lead.

Many of these films I've actually seen, some in theaters but mostly on home video/VOD or a discount theater. The biggest issue is getting enough people to pay full price for a first-run big screen presentation. For some reason or another, audiences simply didn't feel the urgency. Heaven's Gate could have been divided into a trilogy - they certainly had enough footage to do so! It would have at least made UA their money back. But that strategy would have been unthinkable at the time.

Balto (1995) - Amblimation Although the film has gained a sizable cult following on home video and DVD, “Balto” was not a critical and commercial success upon its theatrical release. It didn’t help that the film came out A MONTH AFTER Pixar’s “Toy Story”. It was pulled from theaters after its third week, and Amblimation (an animation production arm of Steven Spielberg’s “Amblin Entertainment”) was shut down after only three films (the other two were “An American Tail: Fievel Goes West” and “We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story”). The good news is that a lot of the animators who worked on that film would go on to work at “DreamWorks Animation” (an animation subsidiary of Spielberg’s other production company “DreamWorks Pictures”).
