it's such an inspiration to me to see your work jared. the way you talk about your own problems and insecurities, and how you seem to confront them. while being a great player and awesome educator, you also manage to remind me that everyone struggles and that that's okay. sometimes i hate myself for not being able to do all the things i want on the drums and elsewhere in my life...but people like you make me think that this in itself is also something i can work on. thanks for that.

He had a great tip about how to go about imitating drummers. Try not to watch a video of a guy transcribing some cool groove from a drummer you like. Instead, try to learn it yourself because half of the growth comes from the trial and error process. You can stumble upon something unique.

That was my favorite, not even for the lesson but just his playing to the metronome and his playthroughs of woven web and lippincott. I still watch those videos constantly. They should bring Matt back for a second lesson with some play theoufhs off of the madness of many album.

Bernard was the funniest, but also very practical. I could watch that man tell stories and drum all day long. The "no-sneaker" comment had me rolling, just watching Jared's expression change as he heard Bernard rattle off this sagely advise. Needless to say, I play mostly heel down, in sneakers as I have some foot issues and sneakers work best-- but the slide importance is also EMPHASIZED by none other than Jojo Mayer. So, it definitely can't be ignored.

Ok it’s hard to believe but I gave the “just be yourself” advice to Chris Adler at a Modern Drummer festival. I was in the lobby during an intermission and Chris was hanging out with his wife. He was scheduled to play either later that day or the next, can’t remember. I couldn’t believe Chris was right there in person and I was majorly star struck. I oozed over to him, introduced myself, big fan blah blah whatever the same stuff everyone says to him. Told him I was looking forward to his performance and he shrugged and said that he was a bit intimidated by the audience and the other drummers on the roster. Chris Adler? The guy who drums like a locomotive hurtling down the side of a mountain at 250 mph? Intimidated? Holy smokes. He’s human after all. I’m a mediocre drummer but I’ve raised three sons so I’m an expert at giving advice whether it is wanted or not. So I told him that the audience wasn’t there to judge him or compare him to the other performers, we just wanted him to do what he does. I said the reason he was asked to play the festival was because everyone wanted to see him do HIS thing, not somebody else’s. He shook my hand and said thanks, end of conversation. Did I change Chris Adler’s life that day? Did he play more confidently because of my sage advice? Did he even remember meeting me ten seconds after walking away? No, no, and hell no. The point I’m making is that not only did I meet Chris Adler but I gave him trite, generic advice that could be found in any self help book ever written. Advice he didn’t solicit or need. The main point I’m making is that I was sort of a toad.
