I agree on the Darkstar scene, I've seen the movie once, and the thing that came to me while watching it was the line: This is a love letter to aviation. And when you think of it that way, you realize that that scene was a salute to Chuck Yeager and the men with the Right Stuff. And I was talking to my son afterwards, and I mentioned that if you ever read the REAL story of Yeager's F-104 testing and subsequent crash.... The Darkstar scene seems almost believable compared to how it went down in real life.

I'm sorry...but you're comparing a MACH 2 crash to a MACH 10+ crash. The more believable comparison would be the SR71 that disintegrated when it yawed going Mach 3+ and the pilots miraculously survived. The only saving grace for the Darkstar scene is that we have no idea what ejection systems it had, it could have had a full ejection pod.

Back in the day.... A student on the pilots course I did (and failed) was an airframe mechanic on a squadron of RAAF Dassault Mirage III. He told a story about how, one day, a Mirage pilot had come across a light plane during a low level flight, the pilot pulled up sharply, and the jet was 'bent', to the extent that when it came back to the flight line, everyone heard the engine spool down in a VERY short time. He explained how integral the Atar engine to the structure of the jet. So, I learned early that planes can be overstressed.

One thing I can say about the Darkstar scene is there is an episode of "The Fighter Pilot Podcast" about the SR-71 where the interviewee, Brian Shul stated that the Navy wanted to keep the Blackbird flying as they still saw it as an important asset. The Air force wouldn't let the Navy be able to aquire the special Tankers needed to keep the Blackbird mission ready so that idea fell through. So if any branch would want a hypersonic spyplane in a world of satellites it would be the Navy.

Loved the comments from both of you. Dad is a USAF fighter pilot, and he had similar criticisms of the new Top Gun movie. But none of the criticism kept us from enjoying it, lol. BTW, we were stationed Tyndall a couple of times. My dad is a graduate of the USAF Weapons School at Nellis, circa 1963-64. Right before Vietnam, he had a strike target deep in a certain Asian country with no return to base plan. He was going to try to get out of the country anyway and hoped to splash down near a Navy ship for pick up. He deeply appreciated his brethren at sea. Then he went to Vietnam (flying the F-100 and F4C Phantom). There was this one munitions target in a cave in the bend of a river with a really steep egress. Pilots had to lob a bomb at it carefully (no guided missiles at the time) and then climb tightly up to avoid the mountain. It was like playing chicken and almost no one was able to hit it (including Dad). When he got back to the States, Dad was a T-38 IP at Webb and at Columbus. I grew up listening to his discussions with fellow fighter pilots or listening to him mentor student pilots in our home. (Don't ask me why they did not notice a quiet girl listening in the corner.) Part of the point that I feel like the writers wanted to make was that in this movie, Maverick isn’t the same Maverick as the 80s Tomcat Maverick. He’s older. He’s seasoned. His career has moved past the “hot shot fighter jock who is constantly posturing and trying to prove he’s the best”. So I feel like going from the opening carrier scene, with the classic top gun nostalgia and then cutting hard to older Maverick in his hanger really helps to bring home the fact that he is a character who has naturally grown as a person, as an aviator, etc. Like they are sobering the viewer to the idea that even Maverick can’t be a hot shot forever. I think including that he is a test pilot for Darkstar shows that he has grown as an aviator. You probably could have talked about it or shown it without the dramatic hypersonic test flight, but that just made for good visuals. But it did help to show that while he’s older, wiser, seasoned, etc…he is still gusty as ever and willing to push the edge. Just my two cents.

The reason they had Admirals around in the movie, is so there was someone who outranked and could bust Maverick. For those who aren't familiar with Navy ranks, a Navy Captain is an O-6 , right below one-star Admiral. A Captain in the Navy is the equivalent of a "full-bird" Colonel in the other services in which a Captain is an O-3.

The Rooster post intro scene should have been a low threat strike or CAS mission that started well then went sideways, possibly with a bad bomb drop OR say an SU22 pops in, Rooster can't cope with the situation for some reason (TIC and bandit in the AO, easy to make this high tension), and show Hangman splashing the SU22 (remember, were told hes the only active fighter pilot with a confirmed kill when he's introduced). This would show a reason for Roosters hesitancy, it would tie in Mavericks "Theyre the best flying low threat high altitude bomb dropping missions" line, it would make Hangman not so hate able/overly douchey, a bad bomb drop would display more reason why F models/WSOs would be an asset, and would make the intro just flow better.

Stealing 3 jets in one movie is a bit much) -> Maverick lectured "I wanna ground you but I gotta give you your dream shot" -> Tom Cruise reaction shot, "youre going to Top Gun" -> cut to black, fade in Music and opening credits/intro scene -> Confidence shaking mission sequence with Rooster" woulda been a much better execution then what we ended up getting.

Iron Eagle 2 and Maverick share some subtle similarities: 1. In Mav: the Skunkworks scene is called: Dark Star & in IE 2 the mission was called: Operation Dark Star. 2. Both Mav & IE2 have missions requiring 4 jets to fly thru a gorge/canyon in order to take out a Rogue State Nuclear Facility. 3. Both Chappie and Maverick are working on old aircraft when they’re introduced 4. The recruits or team chosen in both movies have a hard time gettin along at first - & have to have some time off… 5. Because of the many ejections and head injuries from said test flights he actually developed Alzheimer’s later in life. I took him to see the original top gun when he still was able to differentiate reality from fantasy (a side effect of the Alzheimer’s). Unfortunately he felt the need to say rather loudly during the opening scenes how half the stuff would’ve got people a LOR in real life! People in the movie theater around us were getting extremely irritated with his running loud commentary and it lyrically cost me a couple hundred dollars worth of popcorn for half the movie theater in apologies! He was in his element though after the movie, a lot of people did come up in the lobby and ask him about his experience ..I wish he was still with us to see the second one, I’d love to hear what he would have to say. Show Rooster and Phoenix and Bob doing stuff, then intro Hangman at Topgun, like they showed Mav/Goose with the MiG, then intro Iceman at the school. I will totally agree about the opening scene feeling rushed. It demanded a better pace and dynamic to get to the whole carrier deck action sequence which is also very short. It felt like it was done quickly just to appeal to the fan base that requested “danger zone” and a similar opening to the first film. It only needed a few seconds more (30/50” tops) to make it great. Also the camera work as great as it was it can’t hold a candle to Tony Scott’s work. It felt shaky and most of the tracking shots could not follow the aircraft properly. If you see the original Too Gun opening apart from the fact Scott is using a lot of backlight to keep the aircraft silhouette bigger and more impressive all the aircraft shots are framed and tracked to perfection during any kind of movement (take off, landing, trap, etc). TGM lacked that in that opening scene, the camera could not frame properly the aircraft or people and their activity, stay with them for long periods hence why you see loads of cuts. Loads of fast cuts usually show poor directing execution - *cough* *cough* Michael Bay.

In the first Top Gun, as Mover says it, the Tomcat is the star of the movie. The movie made Tom Cruise a big time movie star, but the airplane was the star of the movie. I actually like the flying scenes from the first one more than this one. While you have to get past the same shots are used multiple times and the airplanes change mid-scene, the exterior shots of the Tomcats was much more thrilling than watching actors look like they are pooping their pants. The clear bubble visors bothered me. They just looked goofy. I know they used them so you could see the actors, but they should have found visors that had some tint to them - even the visor Mover has on in his Hornet Go-Pro footage would have worked. You can see enough of the face that you could have known who was who. While you had to pause reality a bit in the first one - overall it wasn't completely outside of the scope of reality. This one had a much more Iron Eagle feel to the story. It's a movie and a good movie, but need a big reminder to pause reality and go with the entertainment value. And the sailing scene with Penny Benjamin made no sense.

The sailing scene was just a fun moment for Maverick and Penny and it was shot well and short. It set up him driving her home. That led to the second scene where he drove her home. The only shot in "Top Gun" that I know was used twice was the rolling scissors shot. Similarly, "Star Wars" reuses a shot of fighters diving into the Death Star's trench.

Enjoyed the movie more in IMAX for sure, having watched it three times. Just took everything in as "believe" so I could just simply enjoy the fact I was watching an aviation movie. Didn't feel there was enough carrier deck action in the movie. Agree not enough background on the pilots, especially Hangman, Payback and Rooster. Penny was highlighted more than them. Bob cracked me up! Loved that the story though had a mission for the last half of the movie. Loved Maverick's "bringing them back alive sir" comment. Goose really impacted Maverick's code of life in a major way, assuming other's during Maverick career have also died. Didn't understand why more rescue planes weren't sent out at the end or was that just Cyclone's "protect my job" personality? I assumed that Hangman also left the deck of the carrier without approval since he was told to stand down??? How does a carrier launch occur without approval??? Enjoyed Warlock really pulling for Maverick at the end. Loved the Maverick/Hondo interaction, though not much of it in the movie, but the love and respect came across.

23:52 I saw that as a rhetorical question. He’s not inquiring “why are the wings coming out?”, he’s basically saying “I know what you’re doing, and I’m not sure I’m ok with it”. It’s not what he says, it’s how he says it. 24:40 when preparing to ‘land’ Maverick says they have no nose gear and no tail hook. As for the seats not working - when they started her up, they didn’t arm the seats (I know this from DCS). Maverick may not know the RIO stuff, I can believe that, but he knows how to arm the seats. And the RWR when they finally turn things on? I liked that, it was a “huh? I know what that alarm is, but they splashed the two Su-57s, so what is this for?” Because you think they’re safe, but nope. No radio, so no one to tell them “hey, there’s another bandit between you and the boat, adjust course while we send Dagger Spare up to intercept… it will take him 10 minutes because he’s carrying 3 bags, 2 LGBs and 4 AIM-120s”… that really was an unnecessarily heavy Rhino, wasn’t it 😂 Thankfully, as much as I understand certain things (like an overloaded F/A-18) and why this and that is accurate or inaccurate, I’m not a pilot like you guys, so I can still fully immerse myself in the movie. Although I’ll never fully understand what it’s like for you guys watching it, it does come across with what you’re saying how much you have trouble just taking it for what it is, without your pilot side itching to critique the whole time while you watch. I’m looking forward to the Maverick edition of Mover Ruins Movies 😃 In the meantime - Mover Ruins Movies: Iron Eagle 3? (The one with the paintball firing warbirds 😂)

I am a huge fan of the original and I really expected to be disappointed by this one. I wasn’t. This movie was a 10/10 to me as crazy as that sounds. Even the over-the-top scenes just seemed to fit with what they were trying to achieve here as a sequel to Top Gun. It all just worked for me and I found myself empathizing with all the characters and the chemistry between them was there. I even appreciated the initial cockiness of the pilots in the bar scene because they were all later brought back down to earth and humbled by subsequent events. I loved it and I dare say it’s better than the original to me. Like I said before I had come into it with a very critical mind and they absolutely won me over.

After I started going there a few years ago, I learned that the regular theater's projection and sound were so much more inferior. It isn't bright and crisp and the theater doesn't dim the house lights enough. They also brightened the lights once the primary "curtain call" credits started showing as the P-51 was flying, rather than when the screen went black with the roll of the full credits.

I love your resequencing of the movie to be the Darkstar test, followed by the intro, followed by a Rooster event, followed by the diner. Rooster getting into the Academy - If it's anything like the Air Force, I'd guess the vast majority of Naval pilots are also academy grads, so it's possible as a ROTC grad, Rooster would have little chance to be a fighter pilot. "Why are the wings moving?" - I could buy Rooster being unfamiliar with the F-14, but I interpreted as you did; he was asking if what he thought was about to happen. Would be the same as if they were in a Hornet and Maverick unfolded the wings. Penny Benjamin - First movie names her as an Admiral's daughter, so this is probably how they got her in the backseat of an aircraft. "None of them know who Maverick is" - I could see the Navy brass trying to downplay as much as possible a pilot like Maverick. He's obviously not liked amongst his generation, Iceman being an exception. The Girl Pilot - I agree now that it was pointed out; she's the every-pilot. Regarding her being a female, I don't think the outside is anywhere near as meritocratic as the military is or tries to be. From the outside, it's seen as a man's world, especially the combat side. Famous female combat pilots are few and far between when viewed from the outside, so I think they wanted to highlight to the outside what the majority of us from the military already know: women can do this too and can be just as good at it. Regarding "policing your own;" fighter pilots have a reputation both in and outside of the military for being supremely confident to the point of arrogant. Acting cocky is how everyone expects a pilot to act so people think fighter pilots are constantly jockeying with each other for dominance. The mission - They tried for the Star Wars and Ace Combat stakes. "The target shaft is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust report right below the main port. The shaft is ray-shielded so you'll have to use proton torpedoes." "I don't know why two Admirals are there." - This bothered me more than anything else in the movie. From what the movie tries to explain, these two Admirals wouldn't even be involved. These two flags have a lot more else to worry about than this two-week training mission. I could see it more Maverick being sent out to the boat that would be tasked for the mission and working up the crew that would do the mission, not being sent to a shore installation run with a pair of non-operational flag officers.

Great review. I didnt mind Hangman's character arc. I think he found humility and teamsmanship during training, swallowed his pride and told Rooster to 'give them hell,' after his perceived snub on the mission. He was distressed when his first request to fly air cover was denied, so you knew he was a gamer, (or that was the message anyway, I understand virtually any pilot would have been Jonesin to get into that fight). He was the same obnoxious F during the victory scene on the carrier, but now he was one of them, part of he team, he was THEIR obnoxious F. Even Phoenix, who found him off-putting, gave him a hug. This is what happens when you skip the volleyball/football scene Mover, you miss out on all the subtle points! lol Really tho, the 'there's your team' line that Maverick to speaks to Cyclone in the football scene is part of a big theme, resolving differences, putting the team first, and gettin' it done. Working Hangman's mean-girl persona into the mix was a big part of that.

Curious.. i noticed that the intro was kinda rushed in with a shorter version of the original anthem.... also while its still awesome.. in the original that intro linked directly with what came next (Mav and Cougar intercepting the MIGs) because it was the same carrier they launched from and returned too.. but in Maverick the scene then cuts abruptly to a totally unrelated part (the darkstar plot) and that seemed like if the intro , while awesome, seems like a "fanservice insert" .. like if they decided later on the editing of the movie "oh right..lets just recreate the intro and insert it into the beginning"

I’m really happy to hear someone who shares my opinion that this movie was agonizingly close to perfection… they were just a few minor tweaks from having this thing be a 10/10. I’m actually planning on doing a detailed movie review where I propose how it could’ve gone with just a few of these tweaks. Thanks for posting this video to re-inspire me to get back on that project.

Hangman has a kinda sorta turnaround scene before they leave for the mission when he wishes Rooster good luck. They didn't explain any of it but I just took it as whatever rivalry he had went out the window when it came time to do the mission.

Love your work Mover, a little surprised with Wombat on you didn’t call out the Hawkeye radar going blank when they called below radar coverage, maybe for Mover Ruins Movies. Also with the discussion on why a four aircraft strike, this would have been perfect for JASSMs instead. Keep up the great work my daughter like Rooster wants to be a pilot and starts high school next year. A little sad she doesn’t want to be like her old man and be a WSO.

Interesting to hear both of your views; thank you. I only saw the movie today and think you are perhaps being generous with your scores. For me, it is a 7 out of 10 at best, but I want to say 6.5, largely due to the terrible dialogue which runs throughout. The storyline was pretty weak too, however.. the flight scenes (real and cgi) did make for some amazing viewing. I do appreciate though that you are looking at it through a specific lens rather than just as a stand alone movie in itself. I saw something that you said previously with Gronky; that the F-18 is not really “sexy” on screen in the same way as the F-14 so it was almost starting from a losing position compared to the original and I couldn’t agree more. The Hornet didn’t get my pulse racing in the same way. Thanks again though as I completely admire you and your colleagues for the skill and dedication you have to have to fulfil what is only a dream for most (me included).

Gentlemen: Thank you for your dedication to duty! Your expertise on this subject is definitely TOP-NOTCH! I served as a "ground-pounding Gulf Marine" that appreciated - actually APPRECIATED the Air-Ground Liaison who served alongside me during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. His experience as a pilot became secondary to his ability to instill morale. Do correct me if I am wrong, but all pilots are issued a call sign for combat/traffic/morale purposes. The pilot assigned to my unit (Third Marine Regiment/Task Force Taro) may have had the privilege (I served in the command Element as an Operations Clerk) to give the Commanding officer a call sign. As a show of morale, members of the command element received their personal call signs...to include myself (L-Dog).

Mover!! Rooster was an F/A-18 Guy, He never armed his seat, He probably didn't know, you have to reach up on top of the seat and pull the arming pin, that's why the loops and face curtain never left the housing when it was pulled, Maverick would have done it instinctively (And probably done off screen) Plus Maverick explained to him that they were the loud handles, Which given their appearance he should have guessed.
@LuisSoto-ho5fw
@LuisSoto-ho5fw 2 жыл бұрын
I thought almost the exact same thing. Not as familiar with the Martin-Baker as you seem to be :) , but even I know the seat had to be armed. Agree about the loud handle explanation - I mean, his dad was a Tomcat back seater. That being said: Does the back seat need to be armed, though, if the front is? I seem to remember hearing that on the F-14 if the pilot ejects, that automatically causes the back seater to eject also.
@vf111sundower
@vf111sundower 2 жыл бұрын
@@LuisSoto-ho5fw Yes both seats had to be armed, at least to make them initiate the ejection sequence. I believe the Pilot has ejection authority over both seats. (he goes they both go) and there is a switch that allows the backseat to eject independently from the front (he goes its just him) which has happened with a certain orientation ride with a low star admiral. or allows command for both seats upon back seat initiation which is what Goose did in the movie. That's why Maverick told Rooster to eject cease he had the switch in single command for back seat, he would have stayed with the aircraft.
@Nghilifa
@Nghilifa Жыл бұрын
The Martin Baker GRU 7/A seat used in the A/B variants of the Tomcat also had an ejection handle between the legs, so assuming that the seats were armed, why didn't he try that one? Same thing in the original movie, they didn't have to pull the handles above their heads in order to initiate the ejection sequence.

Since there's a lot of nostalgia with the original Top Gun, I want to throw a fun question out there. NAS Miramar obviously didn't survive to make another appearance in Top Gun Maverick (yes, yes, I know it's still an active installation, but it's now MCAS Miramar). Mover and everybody else: what's one closed air base from the 1980s (can be USAF, USN or USMC) that you really wish was still open and you could be stationed at to fly from? For me it's MCAS El Toro, California. Huge runways, great location and the hub of west coast Marine Corps aviation up until the late '90s. A close second for me would be NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. How about you???
@russellmm
@russellmm 2 жыл бұрын
I would have said El Toro too. I was not stationed there but went to the airshows about 10 years in a row (one of which was when an FA-18 hit the ground because the head of the airwing flew it too low during a loop). I had a friend who was a Colonel who took me into the FA-18 Dome simulator (one of the best experiences I ever had) at El Toro. Also, don't forget the nice gold course right on base.

@@russellmm Great stories and insights on El Toro, thanks Russell. The F/A-18 Dome Simulator was legendary, so cool you were able to get an inside look at that. Good call on the golf course too, that was certainly a beautiful Southern California gem hidden right in plain sight. I remember there were F/A-18 silhouettes painted on each of the t-box marker signs, always thought that was cool. In my opinion it was a base that should never have been closed, but way too many outside political factors played in on that decision. And hey, it didn't matter anyway, because the space aliens beat both BRAC and the developers to the punch by taking out El Toro first in the movie Independence Day!

@@tonywatkins6139 yea, the land was probably worth too much money. :). The Dome simulator was pretty awesome. I actually got to fly in it (I was in the back seat) why the Colonel was dog fighting another guy on the controls of an holographic F18 from outside the Dome. I still remember him doing a loop and at the top of the loop he said "oh crap" because he was too low and we barely pulled out of the loop. I was amazed at the situational awareness even in a simulated environment. We ended by landing at Mirarmar. :) Today, at least we get to enjoy DCS in a 3D environment.

@@russellmm You're totally right about the land value. I think the Orange County communities were the only ones in the entire nation (along with Glenview, Illinois) making the argument to the BRAC committee to please keep their bases on the closure list! I've seen it twice.. IMAX was a pretty cool experience. I'm not a fighter pilot but I was doing a heck of a lot of gen av flying when TG1 came out, so TG1 played a significant part in my timeline. I didn;t see TG2 for that plot, it was for the ferw minutes of flying in the movie. What impressed me the most was the recounting of how various parts of the film were filmed and flown by the pilot(s_ that actually flew it. I'll also admit it I'm a softie for P-51s and the barrel roll during the credit roll reminded me a flight I had in a P-51 jump seat around the same time that TG1 came out

@@CWLemoine but I guess the non pilots don’t know that? I’m not always a fan when it’s my area of expertise being shown in a movie, but sometimes they need the actors to reflect what the audience is feeling, not reality. Like the tension of the crew in The Apollo 13 movie. They all say it wouldn’t happen but the audience is feeling that so they need it reflected or released on the screen. Definitely takes away from how much training and how professional pilots are in reality though.
