Mike sillinger played 1000 games and had over 500 points in the nhl, and a dozen teams wanted him on their squad throughout his career, and captained multiple squads. Doesn't sound too embarrassing to me

@@darthandeddeu Are you claiming that he had a no trade clause in those contracts? I'd say being traded so many times can be embarrassing, as it's a hassle and generally a negative. That has little to do with his formidable NHL career however.

Ken Daneyko played 20 seasons, won 3 Stanley Cups and even has his jersey number retired. He was a stay-at-home defenceman who was never relied on for his offense. I am positive he's not at all embarrassed by how many games he played between scoring goals.

I think there's plenty of beer league players who would have loved the chance to play over a 1000 career NHL games, even if it did mean moving around as much as Sillinger. It's a lot of relocating, but hardly something to feel bad about.

You mentioned the 74-75 Caps setting the record for worst ever season and Greg Joly setting a record for worst plus/minus in a single game. So it is a little surprising you never mentioned that in that same year Caps defenseman Bill Mikkelson set an all time record for worst plus/minus in a season with a an all time low of a -82. Now, a lot of that had to do with playing on a team that gave up well over 200 goals more than they scored. But considering that there's been some historically awful teams since then, it's surprising that no one has come close to that record since it was set 48 years ago..
@cmreap
@cmreap Жыл бұрын
On the one hand, plus-minus is really a team stat, not individual. On the other hand, any player who's given a plus or a minus is one of only five guys on the ice, so he owns at least 20% of that team stat. What makes plus-minus valuable is that it kinda sorta confirms what we suspected about a given player. The players who we know are good will have a high plus-minus, and the players we never think about have low (or negative) plus-minus.

Soetaert. He led in 15 goals in one game. Believe in was January 1962, Don Simmons of the Leafs allowed 11 goals in 11- 0 lose at home to the last place Bruins. Leafs played in Chicago the following night, Simmons in net, Leafs win 2-0. Leafs won the Cup three months later. That Washington team was absolutely horrid. Expansion team and also decimated by WHA signings. Tom Williams was the captain of the Caps during this tenure. After losing nine days, the Caps won. Williams went to his locker, and brought out tin foil miniature Stanley Cup. One time after another long streak, he gave a "motivation" statement to this teammates. "Boys, we are good team, we're just in the wrong league."

I don't know what the reasons were for Sillinger go be on that many teams, but looking at his points and games played, I'm not sure you can say it is embarrassing. The goaltender for the Quebec Bulldogs got scored on 16 times against the Habs in 1920, which is the record for most goals in a game by one team. Those 1944 New York Rangers played in Detroit one game and got lit up 15 to 0. Managing 9 shots on goal with their own goaltender stopping 43 of 58 that Detroit peppered his crease with. Ten players scored for Detroit, with one hat trick by Sid (forget his last name) in the largest shutout ever in NHL history with it also being the largest margin of victory. Oh yeah, that game was only 2-0 DET after one period, and that hat trick was performed within the last 8 minutes of the contest.

Well there is mixed signals here since both goalies gave up 15 goals, but the 2nd record was the score, not the # of goals given up. However he did incorrectly say the Rangers gave up 16 goals, when it was 15. 15-0 is still the worst loss in NHL history as Minnesota lost 15-2.

No, because nobody else touched the puck afterwards. Play is only blown dead if the offending team touches the puck after the high stick. If the opposing team touches it, play continues. You can't score a high stick goal on your opponent, but you can on your own team hahaha

The problem with the 1975 Washington Capitals was the whole team. Especially at that time in the n.h.l., first year expansion teams then were beyond awful and took AT LEAST 3 seasons to become competitive, usually more. Calling Greg Joly the next Bobby Orr , playing for a first year expansion team was highly shortsighted on management’s part.

Daneyko looks at his three Stanley Cup rings and laughs at you. Defensive defencemen prevent goals and win games, they don't score goals (see also: Rod Langway: 51 goals in 19 seasons, 2 Norris Trophies, 1 SC, Hall of Fame). Three own goals, and not one of them on an empty net delayed penalty. Yikes.

So which is the record? And I think your math was off in that Red Wings/Rangers game. You said Detroit scored 2 in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd and then 8 more in the 3rd. That’s only 15 goals. I mean in a way I feel like I don’t blame the coach who allowed the goalie to give up 15. I would just hope he talked to him after the 2nd period where he had already given up 10. If I’m the goalie i definitely feel hung out to dry by my team, but maybe if the coach comes over and is like “hey man I know it’s not all on you but I’m thinking of pulling you” the goalie himself is gonna answer. I would hope the coach did that.
