Top Notch Lawn Care

Top Notch Lawn Care

9 жыл бұрын

This week in lawn care was a little challenging. With my exmark turf tracer down I had to borrow my cousins wright stander. It took a couple of long days but I got everything done for the week .The wright stander is a great cutting machine. The only draw back was that the deck seems to scalp a little on uneven ground. Please give me your opinion on floating decks and different decks you have used that seem to work well for you.
Join me on my channel so we can share ideas and learn from each other and build our business together, one stripe at a time!!

I like that Wright stander you have. I have a Hustler X-One 54" and it scalps a bit here and there. I have a foot pedal that I can manually lift the deck so if I get near a dip I can lift the deck and avoid the scalp, then I can always go back and trim it later. The day you know everything is the day you stop growing. Nobody knows everything about lawn care. Good video, keep up the good work.

It's not a true floating deck. A true floating deck would have wheels that adjust to the set height. Say like you don't want it to drop below 2.5 you just set those little black wheels to the 2.5 holes. Or 3 inches. The problem occurs when yo want to cut below 3 inches and those wheels are in the 3 inch holes not allowing the deck to drop. The deck rides on those wheels. Going from 48 to 61 is a jump. Another thing is if you were to have a z you use the foot petal to help you not scalp another reason I like z's over standers. Great video I especially love the beginning of u helping out a widow!! Can't say enough about that!!

You do great with your Walker mower,your walker mower is like its pushing the deck across the ground your deck stays level with the ground while your mower moves up and down with the hills, i think the Walker is the best set up for you on them uneven lawns it looks great, i have found that if i use a wide deck zero turn to mow lawns with lots of dips in them it scalps bad like what you said and thats when we will use our smaller cut width deck mowers to do them lawns, you did awesome buying that Gravely its a game changer in lots of ways. My favorite mower that is like that Gravely is the Simplicity Pacer it stripes nice and yes it can wear you out if you dont use them right just like you said, dont wait to stop before turning lol keep it moving as you turn.Now about that Wright Stander you was using i cant use mine for too long at a time and one time at the end of a long day i jumped on my wright stander to mow neighbors house across the street and i went to fall backwards because my hands slipped off the bar and i grabbed the bar that does the hydros and OMG did i go for a ride, my front tires flew up in the air and i just about made an ass of myself, i guess its better that hitting the reverse lever because i might have flipped over the front on top the engine. ***** Brian your lucky to have the A-Team working with you... A TRICK I LEARNED on the stihl blower that you have is to only choke it half choke and see if it starts faster for you guys, put the choke on that hump between choke on and off and try that...Do this once you have used it once in the morning..That was funny when you said the 40th pull lol i was rolling.. Kentucky Derby this weekend!

for the Wright stander, I have the same mower and the way I fixed it was by taking off the blades and removing the spacers and putting the blades back on. by doing that it raises the blades just enough that the dips don't cause I blades to scalp.

I've noticed on my mowers that the farther away the front swivel wheels are from the deck, the greater the likelihood it's gonna scalp. My Exmark front wheels are really close to the deck and it hardly scalps, but my John Deere's wheels stick out about a foot and it scalps uneven ground.

I've had that same problem on some mowers I've had where the deck sticks out a lot further than the drive wheels(even Walkers). I would suggest a smaller deck or adjusting the outside deck wheels to the lowest setting so the small roller wheels hit before the deck does. Most mowers I've dealt with you can adjust those small deck wheels in 2-3 different notches and tighten the bolt back down. Never had a Wright, thought about it, went with a Hustler and glad I did!, so I can't say for sure. Just a thought, hope it helps...Jason M

Regarding scalping, you might need to set those anti-scalp wheels lower (front, back and sides...all of them). I have a 60" Deere and was previously using a 52" eXamrk on my land and I was concerned I'd scalp in some areas due to the wider deck and my very uneven/sloped ground in various places. Not once has it scalped though. I'd pay close attention to those anti-scalp wheels. Deere for example suggests setting the anti-scalp wheels to be around 1/4" - 1/2" above the mowing surface for your desired height.

You run a tight ship. I have just under 20 lawns that I do Monday-Friday so about 4 a day before I go work afternoons at my day job. I have a 42 and 46 Husqvarna riding mowers with mulching equipment. 2 Husqvarna 3 in 1 self propelled push mowers, 2 Stihl trimmers, Stihl Chainsaw, and a Stihl blower. I do one extra lawn for no charge, it's small and I'm in and out in less than 30 minutes. anti-scalping wheel adjustments. I looked at some pictures of your style mower. The front ainti-scalping wheels seem to have three positions, High, medium, and Low. The lower you set the anti scalping wheels the lower the risk of scalping. The anti scalping wheels effectively create a bottoming out point and the support chains simply flex until the mower has passed the high point. Almost all manufactures set these wheels the medium position. Medium position on humpy-bumpy properties may not work. Try to lower the anti scalping wheels effectively creating an improved buffer on uneven land. Your Walker has so many advantages. The tractor is separate from the mower deck. The deck is smaller. The front wheels on the deck are a large and effectively operate as anti scalping wheels also. WV Hank of the Father and son Team Robinson

With Mower decks the bigger the deck is the more it will scalp.After using a 60 inch deck for a while you will get the hang of it.All our big mowers are 60" mowers we have 42" hustler and a 34" gravely compact pro.These last two never scalp.

TopNotchLawns i hope you will read this. But i am really doing my research on getting in to doing lawns. What is the total cost of getting started. And whats the best mower, weed eater, And blower to buy or start out with.
@TopNotchLawns
@TopNotchLawns 9 жыл бұрын
Total cost can be anywhere from $100 to $20,000 or more. It's an impossible question to answer. The equipment I use is what works for me but might not work great for you. It's super hard to say what is the best. I would suggest by starting out with what will cost the least and as your business grows so can your equipment.
@jacobfox203
@jacobfox203 9 жыл бұрын
Very true thanks for the feed back. Another question if you dont mind. What is the cost off pay out per yard? What i mean is do you charge by the work hour or contract. And how much should be charged per job. Or does it charge by size and how long it takes to cut each lawn. And is there a add of gas plus labor and clean up

I already have a Husqvarna Rz254 26-Hp V-Twin Dual Hydrostatic 54-in Zero-Turn. I got from Lows a year ago to do my own yard. Is there any diff in mowers or is it like you said in one of your videos. That some cut great on slopes and others cut to deep on slopes. Im sorry for all the question i have seen a lot of diff videos and you are more about how good you do your jobs and how good your mowers are what what to have and not to have.

I don't have a stander or zero turn, but I do have a lawn tractor. John Deere D105... I found that with my yard atleast, when I use my 21 inch push mower on level 3 no problem, but when I use my tractor on level 3 there's spots where it scalps because of the size and unevenness. However, if I raise it up just a lil bit to 3.5, it leaves the grass looking nice and doesn't scalp. try that man.

You can prevent it somewhat by experience, I know my deck a little better now so I don't have that.problem as much.

60" scalp really easy compare to a 48" or 52". what the average deck height that you mow, i would say 90" of all my yards are 3.5.

Have a Stander X 52". Only time I scalp is if it's my fault, on one of those iffy areas I know will scalp if approached at the wrong angle. The 61" deck is not helping either in your case. It is a floating deck, they put the engine on it to lower the center of gravity when the deck is lowered for mowing, gives most stability on hillsides ,but it is a true "floating deck. That's the best mower in your fleet, you just gotta get confident on it. Most guys never pushed their Stander to its limits cause half way they get scared. Honestly if you saw how fast I am and some of the places I take my X you'd crap your pants. Spin it in a ditch on a 45 like a mad man, take a pass and crawl up a hill you wouldn't believe. I may make a video of a hillside I cut and let you know to check it out. You'll freak out. . You should make sure you dont have 2 speed settings on the linkage, my X has holes for 6mph and 9.5 I believe is top speed. You could maybe speed up but not sure about that model. With time in the cockpit it should be your highest producer. Dont baby it. It's a freakin TANK! AND, Nothing out there comes close in agility and quickness. Nothing. Good luck! Keep it cut!

rawdiesel1 It's not in my fleet, I was just borrowing it. I get what your saying about the speed and agility. I love that part about it. I'm just not a big fan of the scalping. I think a lot has to do with the fact it is a TANK. With that much weight especially on the deck I will just end up tearing stuff up.

one of the reasons your scalping is u have a 61 inch deck as opposed to a 52 inch and also the new Stander ZK with the Aero core deck has a true free floating deck which is what i have

Any Deck thats 48 and over will scalp, I noticed that alot with my 48 toro 2000, I use a 32 inch fixed deck walk behind to cut the same yards and no scalping, so its not necessary a fixed deck issue.

Cliff Paul I don't have a scalping problem with my walker and turf tracer. If they do cut a little low on turns and stuff then It's usually a tire pressure issue. I've been trying to study up on different decks to see what will be best for me. Thanks for the input.

TopNotchLawns Thanks for the reply, I follow a couple people and your the first to ever reply. I notice on one of your videos you dump your grass off. Do you use a local farmer for that? I haven't found a solution to get rid of my grass efficiently. I live in Texas and the Dumps are cost friendly.
