I on a whim bought the battery and installed it. All I got was the motor spinning. Watched your video and exposed the starter and gears. blew out the dirt. Hit it with some WD40 pressed the blue button and golly gee the engine cranked. Watching the video was helpful in knowing to remove the gas tank for better exposure. Thanks for the help. $18 from Amazon and I got electric start mower. Course it always starts with just one slight pull of the cord but hey.

My Toro mower is 13 years old electric start stopped all at once. There is a fuse at the battery connection will replace will follow your ideas. I do not like to pull on the pull rope many times. If all else fails I have used starter fluid...one short blast, one pull mower starts. I used starter fluid for 3 years on my last mower, mower kept running but I sold the mower when I bought the torro. Never let a mower get too hot.

The electric start is usually the first thing to go because of improper use, maintenance and cost, at least here in Canada. People end up losing the charger. Replacement batteries are expensive also. I end up usually not fixing these electric start systems due to cost, unless it's pretty new. This just happened to be an easy one. Thanks for watching. Cheers

I’ve got a Toro Personal Pacer mower with the 6.75 hp B&S engine. The electric start will spin the motor but not quite fast enought to start it. It has a new 12V 7.2AH battery, fully charged, new float this year, new magneto a year ago, and valves adjusted to spec. I can spin the engine by rotating the blade by hand and with a compression tester installed, it's reading 0 psi which makes sense if the compression release mechanism is working properly. You can give it one tug on the pull start it will fire up and run perfectly. I've got an old Sears battery charger (2, 10 & 50 amp) with small connectors that I can fit on the battery. At the 10 amp setting, it's just enough extra juice to spin the motor a bit faster and start it. Today, I pulled the electric starter and added a bit of oil on the bearings. I can spin it by hand and there's very little resistance. Reinstalled and it made no difference. I'm strumped.
@brantsmallenginerepairs
@brantsmallenginerepairs Ай бұрын
Couple of thoughts. Your compression tester must be bad if it's reading 0 but the engine will run. With a compression release, you should still read probably 40-80psi. Use a multimeter to check the voltage of your battery. It should be higher than 13V. If not then fully charge it. Make sure all connections are tight and there is no corrosion. Make sure the connections are not reversed. Is it the proper battery for the mower? Not only does it have to be 12V, it has to have the proper Amperage. Too low and it will not spin fast enough. Hope you figure it out. Cheers

So I have the same mower. Battery is fully charged but when I push the starter button it does nothing at all. Almost as if the battery is dead. Any idea?
@brantsmallenginerepairs
@brantsmallenginerepairs Жыл бұрын
If the battery is fully charged and you're getting nothing, then the power is not getting to the starter. I believe there is an inline fuse if I recall correctly. I would check that fuse first. If that checks ok, you'll need a multimeter to troubleshoot where the power stops flowing starting at the battery and working your way to the starter. Check all the connections to make sure they are tight. Hope this helps

Hey, since these are flathead engines, the valves are only adjustable via the old-school grinding method right? I had a mower with electric start that, on the compression stroke, the starter wasn't strong enough to turn the engine over. It was a new battery, but I should try to also add my booster/jumper pack and see if maybe the new battery wasn't charged enough yet. I cleaned all connections except at the push button switch on the handle.
@brantsmallenginerepairs

@brantsmallenginerepairs
@brantsmallenginerepairs 2 жыл бұрын
@@M.TTT. that is fairly easy to do. As the lash gets smaller though, compression would go down though, not up. Some things you might want to check for high compression or hard to turn over: make sure there isn't oil getting into the cylinder causing hydro lock, check the flywheel key to make sure it's not partially or fully sheared, possible issue with compression release.
@M.TTT.
@M.TTT. 2 жыл бұрын
@@brantsmallenginerepairs yea, thats what I was thinking, I'll have to double check the oil in cylinder, I replaced the flywheel key as it was very very slightly indented, and yea could be a worn compression release lobe on the crank in there, not sure. The lash would be greater though with wear and tear, so new valves properly gapped may help if needed.

Great job. I learned a few things for sure. I think my Charger is bad. Do you know what I should be reading for DC voltage from the wall charger? I'm NOT getting 13.2V. I'm only getting like 1V. But I wasn't sure if it was some sort of "smart" charger and didn't put out any voltage without a battery connected. Thank you!
@brantsmallenginerepairs
@brantsmallenginerepairs Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what the output would be directly from the wall. You would think it would have to be more than 13V. Maybe try connecting the charger to the mower and read the voltage from the connections on the battery. If it's not more than 13V there with it plugged in and "charging" then you might have a bad charger. Hope this helps. Cheers

@@brantsmallenginerepairs Thanks. I'll wear it down a bit and see what the voltage is on the battery. Then plug in the Toro wall charger and see if it takes it back up. I believe there was an inline fuse but I can't remember honestly. Trace the wiring from the battery to the key and you should find it if there is one. Have you tried charging the battery? Hey Brant, I’ve got the same mower but I think it’s a few years newer. Anyhow, I’ve got a problem with it starting. The electric start will crank the motor and it will turn over but it won’t start. However, you can pull it with the pull start one or two times and the mower will fire up and run perfect. I cleaned the gas tank, fuel line, and the carburetor because the person let it sit with old gas in it for a long time. Like I said, if you pull start it, it runs like a champ, but the electric start just turns it over without starting. The battery is new and I also charged it and is hooked up correctly. Also, I noticed when I push the primer bulb, it isn’t shooting gas into the carb, but the bulb is good, I checked for holes and leaks, but everything is ok. Have you seen this issue before and how can I fix it? I’m sure it’s something simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@brantsmallenginerepairs
@brantsmallenginerepairs Жыл бұрын
The primer issue is likely the gasket between the carb and air filter assembly. Either replace it or just double it up. As for the starter, it sounds like maybe it's not spinning the engine over fast enough? The lack of priming would make it hard to start with electric start and pull start.
@MESABOOGIE01
@MESABOOGIE01 Жыл бұрын
@@brantsmallenginerepairs I got to thinking and by pull starting it, you’re spinning the flywheel faster than the starter. Anyhow, I pulled the plug out and turned the motor over with the electric start, checked the fire on the plug and it was weak. It was a new plug. So I took the Callan off and the gas tank to get to the fly wheel. I noticed a little bit of rust on the magnets so I cleaned them up with steel wool. I tried it and it fired up and has started ever since. I do need to probably replace the gasket between the air breather and the carb though.

Hey! First off, great video. I have a 20067 that's doing the same thing but I don't think it's reversed polarity. I'll investigate and report back. However, regarding the dead batteries, I just brought the battery with my mower back to life from 0.28dcv. Referring to 4:40 of this video, looking at the opposite end of the battery from the terminals, there's a small hole. I inserted a small pick into that and worked it until the plastic cover came off revealing 8 rubber stoppers that I removed and added distilled water. I replaced the 8 stoppers, put the "lid" back in place and connected the smaller battery to my lawn tractor battery (the voltage on the 20067 battery was so low that my battery charger couldn't recognize it) until I was at about 7dcv. I then connected the battery to my charger, the charger recognized it and charged to 12.38dcv. This was all done yesterday (20 June) so I'll find out later how this holds up
