Isn’t this video I do a toughness test on three different Spyderco’s with k390, cruwear, and S110V. I test the factory edge on cruwear and k390, and sharpen all three knives to do the test again.

I applaud you for doing these tests, I could “feel your pain” as the edges contacted the test subjects. I’d consider, a not doing these with new knives, but if you must I’d suggest like putting a pencil through the lanyard hole and rotating up the blade to a measured height before letting it fall/rotate to somewhat standardize the tests. But then again I’m sitting on my butt reading while you are sacrificing virgin blades, so your opinion matters.
@inthepocket7405

Hahaha thanks man. That’s a good idea with a pencil through the lanyard hole... the only problem would be if I do a knife that doesn’t have one, or has one in a different place even. That definitely makes me think though. I know I could make a contraption... it’s just the time it takes to do so, I don’t really have lol wish I did.

It's awesome you're doing these tests. I would like to see a direct test of S30V, S35VN, S45VN, and Cru-Wear to answer the question of A) how significant of an improvement is S45 over the more common 35/30, and B) how do the first three compare to a steel associated with the toughness of Cru-Wear in terms of everyday use? It would also give us an early look of how big of a real world improvement S45 is over the base S30, and could be used to argue whether or not S45 should replace S30 as Spyderco's base steel on the PM2/3.
@inthepocket7405
@inthepocket7405 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! That would be a cool test. I would just have to get s35 and s45 from Spyderco, to test up against each other. I only have s30 from them right now, and I don’t really have any intention of buying the others right now.

This is a good test being a mechanic for years. I use a knife like a knife I scrape gaskets off steel an aluminum, I've cut wires ( usually copper) lots of wire ties an much more material. I like xhp really to be honest I use coldsteel because of back lock after liners folded up on me twice an cut me good once. Another thing I've hit is nails in wood but all in all I've not found a reason to pay high dollar for knives when so many great knives are under$100 an d2 has did me next best really my favorite cheap steel I've not had luck with s35vn its either soft or chippy I have not used coldsteel but have used spyderco s35vn my knife is a roll the edge steel. Lot of money in knives brother nice video this is how we figure if they are really different or a money game. I will say I'll take soft over chippy any day way easier to strop then edge profile have a good one

Cruwear is by far my favourite steel (I've used do far). I'm sure there's better steels out there, but I've got experience with all the favorites.. 420HC, VG10, VGMAX, 154CM, S30V, S35VN, S110V, 20CV (second favourite), M4, 52100. Cruwear reigns supreme in my opinion.
@Old_School69

I too love Cru-wear, and in certain scenarios it could be the "best". You should try Rex 45, Vanadis4Extra, Maxamet, K390, ZDP189, Vanex Super clean, ELMAX, S90V (if toughness isn't a big concern), and MagnaCut. Cru-wear has definitely been gaining more favor with me ever since I got my first taste about a year ago. Everytime I think it has reached the highest level it can get to, it shocks me with something new and goes up even higher in my book. Most recently I picked up the new Benchmade Shootout. That is a sexy fucking knife. 3.5 inch OTF tanto that is so lightweight because of the carbon fiber elite scales and the thinnest 3.5 inch blade I've ever seen on an OTF. The Cru-wear is the reason they were able to go so thin with the blade. Toughness, edge retention, and it is easy to sharpen. All it needs is DLC coating to stop it from rusting. Cru-wear is definitely in my top 10 best all-around folding knife steels.

K390 strikes a really good balance for me…its edge retention is absolutely top shelf. I’ve rolled through what felt like miles of cardboard and the working edge stays completely intact. I’ve never had a chip and even in the northeast, with all sorts of fucked up weather, no rust…maybe a bit of color but that’s it. Being an enthusiastic freehand sharpener, Cruwear is still my favorite steel…but K390 is really, REALLY up there. There isn’t much downside there unless you sweat acid or work at out sea.

Amos Wang Hey Amos, I can definitely give you some feedback. Although, I did not have to reprofile the s110, I found that the stones felt really similar on that vs the k390, with a very similar result. I almost felt like the s110 was a little easier though, surprisingly. They both came up very keen and sticky on the apex. The cruwear, on the other hand, stood out big time. It was much quicker in reprofiling, and came up much quicker. The stones were much more effective on the cruwear, and it is a steel that continues to amaze me. I would suggest any of these, depending on your sharpening capabilities, and also what you use your knives for. Hope this answers any questions you had👍

Cruware is not my favorite steel. I don't typically run my knives into obstacles such as rocks and staples, so do not require its main attributes. Corosion resistance and edge retention during normal cutting tasks are more important to me, so zdp, 110, 90, and more recently, rex45, maxamet and 15. Thanks for a great, comprehensive reveiw. Still ho,ds up, all these years later.👍

cruwear can be ran thinner without chipping or rolling than some of those and is easier to sharpen than all. thinner geometry improves performance. cruwear with a low temp temper is pretty damn near stainless where some of those you mentioned aren't even close to such. It depends on your use case and some other variables for steel choice I agree

Trying something different... I don’t know. lol There have been people like BBB and Supersteel Steve that have put Maxamet through nails, so I don’t think you have to worry about it being brittle. It has great edge stability, maxamet. Just be careful with low grit diamond stones on the Apex in sharpening... seems like you don’t want to go under 300 grit in refining the apex.

I did try test like this long time ago but different test medium (Aluminium, Copper, Brass and Steel) I was comparing S7 ,D2 and S35VN and all 3 perform similarly.. Aluminium and Copper did absolutely nothing and put on 3 mirror 0.25micron edge with no damage at all but ones I came to brass the damage was significant and steel with comparable result.. Rex 45 and k390 should perform best in this regard cause this test is more towards the edge stability than the actual toughness of the steel.. I'm surprised with S110V results.. Good job Kenny..

Dude, why are you using a $200 knife to cut cardboard? Why not use a three dollar box cutter? If you want to test toughness use wood, rubber and get some bones from the butcher.

Marin Capital there is no joy in using a 3$ box cutter, and the ergonomics on box cutters are usually awful. I think that stainless steel staples, wire, zip ties, and a rock are pretty good tests of toughness. How is rubber a good toughness test, and how is it any better than the 3 I used? Bone might be cool, but wood does not really test toughness any more than the media I chose.

InThePocket Well we use knives to cut rope, (flesh bone) hunt and leather. The zip ties are brilliant. I like your test, I just think cutting paper is not a great test. Leather is. Try and cut some old shoe leather into strips for us. See how the edges hold up.

Marin Capital cutting paper isn’t part of the test. Cutting paper is just used to show you the state of the apex. I would never think that cutting paper or cardboard would test the toughness or edge stability of a steel.

CPM Cru-Wear is FAR superior to K390.... in toughness, wear resistance, edge retention, etc..... K390 is a great knife steel, but it’s not in the same class as Cru-Wear.

Totally unwatchable. 9 minutes to, sort of, describe what you are going to do, then you repeat yourself at every step AND you stop doing anything while you talk! Constructive criticism: describe the intent of the "test" in 60 seconds. If you can't summarize it in a minute, you haven't thought about what you are really going to be testing yet. Next, don't punish viewers by telling us over and over and over what you are GOING to do, just DO it. Summarize results, don't take each step as another opportunity to ramble. I'll end with this, testing should always, always, test ONE variable at a time. That means either a user edge, or a factory edge. If you don't have all factory edges, sharpen them all the exact same way. Test them all the exact same way. And don't treat viewers like they are children. Yes, we know if you can SEE deflection and chipping on a blade it is not going to cut very well. That's a given, it doesn't require 5 minutes of reiteration.

@@inthepocket7405 I understand that a lot of simps offer glowing praise where it is not appropriate. Sort of like every player gets a trophy. In that vein, your video belongs in the Special Olympics. Someday you may even learn to gracefully accept constructive criticism. Or not.

Interesting mate, you really are a self righteous hippie. Ask for some advice, the first comment you received was great advice and you decided to shut it down. Also on what plant would you think that plastic cable tie would beat steel, stick to surfboard sales Champ. I am non the wiser from your information and testing process. P.S. you can get your credit card statements online so you don’t have to get so upset about there paper use.❤

My god, cry about it and spare us all the multiple paragraph report on why the video is bad. Turn it, this content is free. Let's all compared to the video you made. If you don't mind post a link.

But then again I’m sitting on my butt reading while you are sacrificing virgin blades, so your opinion matters
