I bought a pot full of that black and blue salvia and half buried it in the pot. I'm in Florida and the sun is vicious. The plant is now 5' tall and I cant dig it out. I took cuttings and put them into wet dirt, in shade, and they didn't even wilt. When they establish they will be planted everywhere. The pollinators and hummers LOVE them.

So there's a bunch of different types of methods but I'm very loosely following one where instead of digging up your beds to plant, you create a bit of a "lasagna bed" - layering compost, cardboard, and mulch to prepare for planting and kill any grass and weeds. You do it the season before and the compost brings nutrients to the soil, the cardboard makes it so any weeds or grass can't grow without light, and the wood chips keeps everything down and controls moisture, and eventually breaks down to help the soil further. It gets pretty complicated and I am still learning but that's kind of the gist! The goal is that over the next few years I will have nice rich dirt without having to till up everything and disturb existing microbial and insect networks

Awesome I was just watching your balcony garden video for the first time and see your goal is being rolled out now somewhere is this the home you were looking for ? Also if you could what potting soil were you using then in your apartment?

Yes! I have achieved my goal :) I use a high quality local mix from my garden store. I have tried vigoro and miraclegro and unfortunately have found they had fungus gnats and large sticks in the soil! I also always stock perlite and coconut coir on hand to mix in to customize the soil to the plant (more perlite for drainage loving plants, more coconut coir for moisture)

@@benjisantana_ Yes! I am actually loosely following the back to eden method for my native plant garden area, but I am waiting for a delivery of more wood chips lol. he is also in Washington and very similar climate to mine over the border so hopefully can find some success with it!

I’ve always kinda hated plain grass lawns lol. I would turn my yard into a meadow if my parents would let me.

Totally same. I think I’ll keep a small grass or clover area for picnics or lying down but otherwise I don’t really care for it! It’s ecologically useless and I can’t even eat it 🤣

I know it's your 1st year with your garden but have you had insect pests in the edible part of the garden yet? How did you deal with them in an environmentally friendly way? If they're small like aphids, I squish them. Others I move them far away from my food plants, or in the garden scrap. You can let them black berries spread invasively at my place!!!! lol There is nothing more annoying than having to clean up and trim my neighbor's tree that hangs over my side >_< How did you choose your side yard plants? Did you do anything to your property soil? Testing, covering, mixing, etc. @16:43 omg a meowmeow!!!!!!! How did you choose a drip system? I find that some of them pop out of the line so it shoots a stream of water out from one of the joints -_- @19:40 I love how jasmine smells ^_^ @20:33 I hope you didn't regret that :P

I aspire to make a veggie bed as good as that one. Is this in Canada? Does the cold kill the crops over the winter or are they perennial?

Yes this is Canada but I live in USDA zone 9a so we don't get snowy winters, just lots of rain. Almost everything is dormant in the winter except for kale and a few other cold hardy veggies. :) some of the herbs are perennials but most are annual veggies
