Tower of Terror is a 1997 American made-for-television supernatural horror film written and directed by D. J. MacHale. It is based on the theme park attraction The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida and was originally a presentation of The Wonderful World of Disney. It is also Disney's first film based on one of its theme park attractions and the only one produced for television.

I saw Tower of Terror on the Disney Channel (a couple of years after its original broadcast, I believe) and it was mainly forgettable, but I never forgot some of the shots and only a couple of moments. Maybe I'll check it out someday and see what I final thought on it is.

Tower of Terror ironically comes off as what should have been done with the Haunted Mansion. You can add some comedy or whatever, but there should be this focus on building up this place to make it feel unsettling rather than whatever they tried to accomplish with that film. Might not be the standout film in the Disney library, but as far as ride adaptations go, it probably sits on the top 5 easily.
@OliverTCrowe
@OliverTCrowe 2 жыл бұрын
Ironically, the video game adaption of the Haunted Mansion is what the film should have been. Yeah, there was mild comedy and the story wasn't super great, but the main focus was the spookiness of exploring...well, a haunted mansion. It had legitimately creepy moments, and occasional scary ones if you were a kid playing it. Had the story been altered just a bit and throw in some character development, and that in itself could have been a great building block to great adaption.

D.J. MacHale, who wrote this movie, also wrote for Ghostwriter and Are You Afraid Of The Dark. In a book he wrote, The Never War, MacHale put in an easter egg for the Tower Of Terror movie. A young bellhop in a New York hotel is very excited because his uncle got him a job at a glitzy new hotel in Hollywood. The bellhop is Dewey, the one who disappeared with the guests in the elevator.

Now, for my playlist of all DisneyCember reviews in chronological order, this movie first aired on ABC in "The Wonderful World of Disney" on October 26, 1997, which happens to be the day after the premiere of Under Wraps on Disney Channel, on October 25! Yeah, as soon as I saw you released this video, all I could think was, “hey, I remembered watching this movie many times and always really liking it!” Since you seem to have a similar taste to me, I’m not surprised you enjoyed it. Pretty solid movie.

I didn't know this was a thing so I have no opinion on it. However, I will say the ride was always one of the best things I experienced in any Disney park. The queue alone is so immersive.

Bleh. Why can't Disney remake one of their not-so-good movies, like The Haunted Mansion or The Black Cauldron?

Loved this movie as a kid, and I need to check it out again. Plus I enjoy Mike McShane in everything I've seen him in (Brotherly Love/Whose Line Is It Anyway).

This used to be a staple every Halloween season on my local Disney affiliate channel, along with movies like Phantom of the Megaplex and Halloweentown. None of them were the greatest films ever made, but they were still good enough for kids to look forward to every year. It's honestly a little sad that my local channel is no longer partnered with Disney since I still half-expect to see these movies listed during the season when I'm browsing.

This is actually the first movie I bought myself. On eBay not knowing whether it was genuine or not, but not really caring. I was kind of obsessed with Tower of Terror because I was so scared of it. I had dreams about, did a ton of research, and in the end chickened out with my brother 6 years older than me that was scaring the hell out me beyond the scary aspects of the actual ride. Still haven't been on it, and I love drop towers these days.

Funny story, I proposed to my boyfriend this year right after riding it and had pitchers of it behind us. I'm a massive chicken but knee he wanted to do so after a half an hour wait or more we finally got in and he said he wanted to here me scream. He didn't hear me over the younger girls but I did scream having my 200 pound hide out of the seat. So when we joined back up with my family for a couple pitchers I tapped my zipped pocket and it felt like half of that street was cheering. Sadly the ring was a tiny bit too small and the photo woman had to call to people for work with someone saying, "Sorry but we can't compete with that." He did say yes and I did find a ring that fits him better.
