What is the fuel economy of a Toyota 4Runner How many miles per gallon does a Toyota 4Runner SR5 get on the highway? Does a 2023 Toyota 4Runner actually get its EPA MPG? Tonight we find out with this real world gas mileage test!

I wish Toyota had installed an 8 speed a few years ago and maybe direct injection both would have helped the MPG. The poor MPG is often the first thing all the car reviews mention. I wanted to get this 2023 model before the redesign.

This is right in line with my findings as well. On a smooth flat road doing 65 or below I can actually hit 23.4 without too much trouble. Stock tires and suspension are a must and nothing on the roof. I was pleasantly surprised.

Just picked up a new to me 2018 Limited and averaged 21.0 for the 180 mi home from the dealer...all highway, but crappy busy traffic. If this is even close, I'm very happy with that. You got great results there!

I just bought a 2019 sr5 4x4 came with cheap tire and a roof rack and I’m getting 18ish at 75-80mph. I might have to take off the rack and when the new KO3s come out I’ll swap the tires out because I was a little disappointed with the mpgs.

I have a 2023 SR5 Premium 4WD and I average around 20 MPG going back and forth to work. I have only 2000 miles on my 4 runner. The key I think is keeping the green eco light illuminated if possible. I have hit over 21 MPG also.

Is that mostly city or highway? I want to get one but I’d be driving mostly city so I’m guessing 16mpg?

I got a 2017 2wd limited today and it actually got to 25mpg on the highway. It avaraged at 22.8. I was in disbelief. Much better than expected. Love the 4runners ❤❤

I rented 4Runners from Avis a couple times for road trips and I got 18-20 mpg mostly highway driving 70-80 mph.

I have a Frontier 2022. It gives average 22 mpg. I’m interested in a Runner 2022 and im getting info. The frontier once gave 28 mpg with cruise control 65 mph. I know in the Runner is impossible.

Just bought a ‘23 SR5 2wd and I get about 21 mpg if I stick to 70 on my drive from Dallas to South TX that I do weekly.

My 2006 2wd 4Runner averages just above 25mpg. I've wanted a new one for the longest time but idk it's hard to justify the purchase when Toyota actually got worse mpg in the current gen.

Interesting test. Thanks for sharing. When compared to a newer Honda Passport, the Passport's mpg is rated approximately 5-7 miles per gallon better than the 4Runner. Curious, is this because of a difference in vehicle weight? A difference in body on frame vs unibody? They both have NA V6's.

The passport is lighter, has a slightly smaller displacement engine, nine gears instead of five, and I would imagine it’s aerodynamics are slightly better than the brick-like 4Runner. All of those factors add up to the EPA MPG difference, although I have not tested a passport to see how it does in my test.

Here’s what I want to know from someone. I have a 2016 tundra platinum. On one tank of gas I can drive 425 miles before I have to fill up again. I live in Texas and my daughter and her family just moved to Georgia. How many miles can the new 2023 Sequoia or 4Runner get. We are considering buying a sequoia or 4Runner 2023 but I want to know how good is it on long distance travel. We used to go from Houston to Austin on one tank of gas and when we got home I still had gas in my truck. I didn’t need to refuel right away. So happy with my tundra.

Based on your needs I think the Sequoia is a better choice, it appears to have longer theoretical range than a 4Runner

Yes, the 2023 4Runner SR5 has standard LED headlights and they are very good for night driving

I have the 2023 SR5 Premium 4WD and the gas mileage is shameful. I get 20 MPG at best - and that's only when I use cruise control which keeps the engine in eco mode.

Best I ever got was 23.5mpg around 65mph highway. Combined, 8 get around 19.5mpg. I try to drive gently, you can’t win any races in the thing anyway.
