In this video, I will go over what the KDMax Performance Tune is and share my initial review of the benefits that this tune provides. The KDMax tune is the latest iteration of the original Orange Virus Tune (or OVTune) and is available for all 3rd Gen V6 Tacomas.

One thing that I forgot to go over in the video was the option to tune the Tacoma based on different fuel octane levels. When installing the tune, you do have the option to choose between regular (87) and premium (91/93) fuel. Unfortunately I am unable to provide any real-world data that shows any benefits from tuning the Tacoma with premium fuel (as I don't currently have access to test the Tacoma on a dyno)... However, I do imagine that choosing the premium fuel option could potentially allow the tune to advance ignition timing slightly, which would allow the Tacoma to create more horsepower & torque.

Awesome review 👏. I just wish I could find someone with a MT Tacoma who could provide more insight on the difference and their choice of tune. Manual Tacos are the forgotten gems.

Got this installed on my 2019 OR and it’s definitely like night and day in every way ...like a new truck...I got the most sensitive pedal setting and it drives like a WRX even though I have 33’s and no gearing . The installer said I gained 20HP and it definitely feels that way🤙🏽

@@LevelUpMechanics yea I spent 350 for the best package, it took 20 minutes to install vs. 2500 for new gears or 6500 for the supercharger , it’s for sure the place to start. The installer said it was undetectable by the dealership just not to brag about how much faster my truck is to anyone at Toyota 🤙🏽

I went from 16 mpg (a mix city & highway) to 18+ mpg. But if you drive balls-to-the-walls everywhere, you might not see much improvement lol 😆 I hope this info helps!

@@LevelUpMechanics Yes, yes, yes! After the tune is how this truck is supposed to drive. The tune took away the limiters installed by the factory. I laughed out loud when I drove away from having this done and for about 15 minutes after. I’m grateful that there are people out there who can write the code to make these tunes. Can’t say enough about it. 😹🙌🏻

@@LevelUpMechanics Hi, so performance is excellent. I have an Injen Evolution CAI in the box waiting to be installed. Do you think it would make any more improvements or just be redundant to install? I have stock air box with a K&N drop-in currently.

I have an Injen Evolution Cold Air Intake as well 👍👍. The great thing about Injen is that it creates 2 access points for cold air (as opposed to one access point with a stock intake). The intake will improve your engine performance. I've had no issues with mine and I'm very happy with it.

Thanks! As far as using ECT with the tune is concerned, it definitely helps the power response when hauling a heavy load, as it allows you to stay in you current gear(s) even longer to give you more "access" to the engine's power. However, I find myself rarely ever using ECT under normal (no-heavy-load) driving conditions. The newest tune (KDMAX PRO+XT) does such a great job at giving you all the power whenever you want, that it makes ECT feel kind of obsolete. These days, I just reserve the ECT feature for when I'm hauling something REALLY heavy. I honestly have no need for it as a daily option since the tune does such a great job on its own. I hope this info helps! 😁

In stop and go traffic, normal and LT are too jumpy. Thats why I went with SLT. Tip in is still touchy but not undesirable. The tune doesnt really improve torque delivery but manages the gearing to give more usable power all the time. Top end is where you will notice power increase.

In less than two weeks, I will be getting a '22 Tacoma TRD Sport DCSB with M/T, and plan to do almost exactly what you've done to yours! Blacking it out, getting the TRD Pro 16' wheels, getting bigger tires, tinting the windows, lifting it and more! What year is yours? And what other mods have you done?

Hello - Are those three upgraded tires from the factory? I kbkw Toyota offers the all terrain tire upgrade for like $850, and the all terrain tire upgrade with the alloy wheels for like $2400. Are your tires/wheels those? Or did you get these after market? What are the sizes please? Also, is it necessary to get a lift in order to fit that particular wheel tire combo?

No roof / bed rack... No decked drawer system (yet)... the throttling options for this Tacoma definitely make a genuine improvement in the responsiveness when accelerating, even if you have some weight on the Taco 🌮

The KDMax passes smog checks in CA. The KD tuner in southern CA rented a Tacoma, put a tune on it, then took it for an emissions test - passed!

@@chaoticgood3935 Does not matter what the tuner claims he did, if he has not went through all the required tests and has not received the I think they are called E.O. certification sticker then the tune is not legal in any state that is using Californias stupid emissions laws and there are several states that have stupidly adopted the California standards.

How would u change from one tune option to a different one at a later time? Would u have to go back to the pro tuner?

If you purchase the software & OBDII connector, then no. You could potentially do it on your own. HOWEVER, if you don't know what you are doing, you could potentially "brick" your ecm. If you are comfortable installing software onto your ecm, then you could potentially change settings as you see fit... It is a bit more expensive to be able to have the ability to change settings how you see fit... if you need more info, I would suggest checking out www.vftuner.com. The option is there if you need it... but you have to understand what you're doing or else you may run into some significant problems...

Unfortunately the KDMAX Tune is currently compatible only for the V6 Tacomas. It might be worthwhile to go to kdmaxtuning.com/ and send the developers a message to see if there is more info available about any 4-cylinder options that might be "in the works" for the Tacoma.

Does KDMax somehow adjust itself if an air intake upgrade (Ingen) is done or exhaust is upgraded? Would it take advantage of these type upgrades to provide more torque and HP?

Honestly I do not know just yet... there are quite a lot of variables that go into the KDMax Tune. I'd imagine it would depend on closed loop & open loop fuel delivery options available to the ecm. If I had to guess, I'd think that the best results would be from custom tuning the Tacoma AFTER all of the other performance upgrades were installed.

Absolutely the best review I’ve come across on the KDMax. Virtually all other resources and information have been incomplete, poorly crafted and difficult to get a clear understanding of KDMax. Technically, yes... but the only way it would void your warranty is if YOU tell Toyota that you've modified / tuned your Tacoma. Otherwise, you should be fine. As an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician, I have never run into any warranty issues in regards to aftermarket software tunes.

From my personal experience, I've noticed a 1-2 mpg increase overall. It's not much, but when combined with all the other benefits, it makes this tune the best upgrade I have done to the Tacoma, hands-down! 👍

Nope. The newest tune ( KDMAX 9.0 ) has adaptive fuel learning, so you can safely run on regular (87 octane) fuel with no issues at all.

I chose the high octane option because it allows the engine to be tuned with more aggressive ignition timing (you can potentially advance your ignition timing when using higher octane fuel to create more Hp / Tq for better performance). Of course choosing 87 octane is a great option too... I just wanted to bump up the performance output of the engine slightly more by using the premium 93 octane option...

I will actually be upgrading the tune next weekend (there is a tune event scheduled in Katy, TX on March 5th). I intend to create a video shortly after to explain what the new updated version offers.

Stop telling people it can void your warranty, because they can't see it and that's just mis-information. Love the black on red theme your Sport has, looks great. What kind of suspension do you have?

99% of the time, you are probably right. It's very rare for a dealer / technician to find the tune during normal diagnostics... however, it is still possible. For example, let's say there is an ecm failure (and the owner is trying to get their Tacoma repaired under warranty) . In this scenario, a technician would remove the ecm and send it off to a Toyota engineer for software diagnostics... if a tuner can see what file the ecm is tuned with, I can guarantee you that a Toyota engineer would be able to see it too. In this scenario, it could potentially be a legitimate claim to void a factory warranty, because Toyota could prove that the vehicle was modified and that the modification potentially caused a failure. I only want to be as transparent as possible with the information I provide. Though at the end of the day, I agree that the chances of voiding your warranty are miniscule at best 👌 😎 Currently, I am running with the Eibach Stage 2 Coilover Lift Kit and I am VERY happy with the performance & reliability. My 2017 Tacoma does not have this feature. However, the regular cruise control works normally for me. The KDMAX Tune shouldn't affect your adaptive cruise control. However, I would highly recommend contacting a regional tuner in your area to double-check & verify.

Just as an update, I found a definitive answer for you. Adaptive cruise control will use the factory "untuned" settings and the normal cruise control will use the kdmax tune settings. So you shouldn't have any issues, should you decide to cruise lol.

Beware of any tune that you have to go to the tuner to have it installed. Even handheld tuners are a risk. If you are under warranty you need to decided if you are ready to pay out of pocket any engine or drivetrain repairs that would have been covered under warranty if not for installing a tune. If you are out of warranty then you are responsible no matter what and that changes things so installing a tune at that point can make more sense. You just need to know the full risks and responsibilities of installing a tune under warranty. All tunes leave a footprint, any tuner that tells you different when they are reprogramming your ECU is lying to you. The ECU will log every time the ECU has been flashed and the manufacture knows how many times it has been flashed by Toyota so if you show up for warranty work for engine or drivetrain issues and they find your ECU has been flashed 6 times and Toyota's records in their computer system shows it should only have 2 flashes or if it has never had a flash by Toyota then you can have your entire engine and drivetrain warranty voided on the spot. If while you are under warranty you accept that and are willing to pay out of pocket for engine and or drivetrain repairs then getting a tune is fine but if you are not willing to pick up the cost of engine and or drivetrain repairs while the vehicle is under warranty then you may want to hold off on getting a tune flashed onto your ECU.

If I remember correctly, I paid $300 at the time. There is a newer version out now (KDMAX PRO) and I believe the price (on average) is closer to $400. I had my tacoma tuned in Katy (Houston) by a professional tuner who traveled from San Antonio for a scheduled tuning event. You can visit the kdmaxtuning.com/ website and click on "locations" to find a professional tuner near you. I will actually be upgrading to the latest version on March 5th, so I am looking forward to creating another video covering all of the new updates 😄 .

This is an aftermarket tune with national support... a dealership would not do something like this. I would recommend visiting kdmaxprotuning.com/ and contact a professional tuner that is near your location. Once your vehicle's ECM is "flashed" with the KDMAX tune, it will stay "tuned" forever. The only way to reset your vehicle back to "stock" settings is to re-flash the ECM back to stock. Disconnecting the battery WILL NOT reset your vehicle. I hope this info helps 😁

I have a CAI and exhaust installed on my tacoma and I have no compatibility issues in relation to the tune. Everything is running smoothly! So far, the KDMAX Performance Tune has made the driving experience 10x better than stock settings!

I really liked both the Regular & LT options. Both options can be a little "touchy" when accelerating from a stop, but I personally like an immediate response from the gas pedal. However, I decided to settle on the SLT option because my wife also drives the Tacoma. It was a good compromise because the SLT option still felt WAY BETTER than stock, but it isn't too aggressive (when accelerating from a stop) to the point that my wife could potentially rear-end vehicles in front of her while she's driving lol 😅.

The problem with this tune, or any tune you do on any vehicle and it requires 90+ octane, it’s going to cost a lot more for your gas. Not just a little more but a lot more. I put a tune with a cold air intake(CAI) on my Mustang GT and it required at least 91 octane fuel. Now that combo did give me a 32 hp boost (Dyno confirmed), a much better throttle response and a raucously beautiful sound but I paid dearly for it at the gas pump. I don’t think it’s worth the price of the tune, the loss of my warranty and the added fuel cost to improve the throttle response on my 2021 Tacoma. This plus the possible loss of reliability factor which is why I bought a Toyota in the first place.

I get where you're coming from... however, it's important to know that you have multiple options for this tune (including the ability to continue using 87 octane)... So, you DON'T have to run on premium fuel if you don't want to. The main two benefits of this tune are improving throttle response & gear shifting. If toyota can create a TSB to improve the gear hunting on these Tacomas, then I highly doubt the kdmax performance tune would compromise the reliability of the Tacoma in regards to hear hunting (especially since the kdmax tune requires the TSB update to be installed prior to adding the tune to the Tacoma). The only reason I chose the 91+ octane option was because I wanted more performance results. I appreciate you bringing up this topic! Tuning the Tacoma isn't for everyone, so I get where you're coming from.

I have the 87 oct tune and get great throttle response, along with mpg's over 20 including driving around inspecting rental properties for work all day on the islands. Premium is most certainly not even close to being necessary to achieve the benefits the tunes have to offer

I agree with Chad. The ONLY reason I chose to tune with 93 octane is because the engine timing can be advanced more for additional HP / TQ gains. The option to tune with 87 octane is still a great choice and can definitely help to maintain / improve the MPG performance for the Tacoma.

That's why I stated it at the very beginning, for total transparency... Anytime you modify the Tacoma (kdmax tune, lift kit, supercharger, pedal commander, aftermarket intake / exhaust, etc) you are voiding the factory powertrain warranty (which is a 5 year / 60K mile warranty). With that said, I haven't come across anyone having a warranty issue with the kdmax performance tune installed as of yet (and I highly doubt it will happen). But it is "possible", and that's why I wanted to be up-front with the info, which is why I stated it in the video.

As an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician with over 15 years of professional experience, I can assure you that when you modify your vehicle, the modifications can void factory warranties. Whether a particular dealership CHOOSES to void the warranty (or not) is solely up to them at that point. If YOUR dealership doesn't void warranties from other types of modifications, then chances are that they wouldn't void a warranty for the kdmax performance tune... in which case, I don't understand what all the fuss is about lmao 🤣
