Hi everyone,
My name is Tracy and I garden in Zone 4/5 (maybe zone 5/6 judging by our last winter) in Toronto, Canada.
You are watching a video of me in Part 2 of 2: Planting New Perennials - Fire Light Tidbit Hydrangea, Primrose, English Daisy, and Onyx & Pearls Penstemon. I'm so excited as I finally got one of the new panicle hydrangeas that were recently introduced by Proven Winners. I would have liked to plant the new Quikfire Fab and Limelight Prime but I don't have any more space for them. I wish I had more garden space for all those new hydrangeas. 💚🪴💚
Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video. Take care & stay safe!
Happy (spring) gardening & see you on the next video! 🪴💚

Hi Tracy. Those tiny bugs are called pillbugs or rollie-pollies. They tend to be harmless but I had that happen to my glardias so I had to remove & put them in containers. You can use DE (food grade) & sprinkle it around the plant you want to protect. Keep in mind DE will kill any insect with skeletal shells… ants, lady bugs, spider… etc. so use with caution.

@@TracysHomeGarden I visit once a week🤦🏽‍♀️. They had a few late August and but they didn’t last long. Yes, last year was very difficult for supplies and plants. Looks like LL Prime is ahead with of the original LL. My LL tree - just about to form buds - I think. Last year was a really tough year when it came to buying plants - most garden nurseries had very few in stock or completely sold out. Please give me an update on how floppy LL Prime blooms get. Perhaps next year may be better for one to judge. If the branches are stronger then I will definitely buy a Prime and train it into new standards to replace my LL trees. Thank you and happy gardening Yannie! 💚🙏🪴

I've never seen the Fire Light Tidbit hydrangea for sale in my neck of the woods. I think I might have to look for that one! I hope your red lobelia and the primrose survive the bug damage and come back for you. Try doing a Google search on bugs that feed on those two plants, and hopefully, you'll find a pesticide that will kill them. I sure hope you can find something to get rid of those pests. Tracy, In spite of the bug damage, your garden is beautiful. ~Margie

Thank you Margie, Fire Light Tidbit and the other new introductions are only seen at Vandermeer (so far). Last week when I was at Sheridan (Unionville location), they were unloading some Ah Ha Stuff, LL Prime, etc...but they didn't have the Fire Light Tidbit yet. I'm curious to know if anyone has the LL Prime and Quick Fire Fab. I wanted to get a Quick Fire Fab but cannot justify the removal of some larger performing shrubs in my garden. This is where I wished I had more garden space to plant it. :-)

Hello. Those are Rolly Polly bugs or often times called pill bugs. Some thing as simple as diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the soil should help. It’s not toxic and should be easily found at your local big box store. They damaged some plants in my berm out front. I had to replace a couple of Blue Fescue. They will eat the roots of the plant as well.

In the past I have had earwigs eat my lobelia so I don’t buy that plant anymore. I did plant the proven winners midnight masquerade penstamon and I’m hoping it is not attacked. Since it’s planted near my sum and substance hosta and my Incrediball hydrangea I will sprinkle on that diatomaceous earth.

FL Tidbit did well for me last year - it bloomed later in the season and coloured up beautifully in fall. I love having a mix of hydrangeas that bloom at different times throughout the season. There are also so many to choose from and they look beautiful for so long in the season. Ps. Do you remember the time stamp on the video when you see the pink shrub? It’s winter now and the garden is “bare” so it’s hard for me to recall the plants…😁…it’s funny how much we forget when the garden goes dormant in winter. This is what makes spring so exciting - a new beginning every year for me.

Hey Tracy, so sorry to see what happened with those 2 plants! Those bugs looked like pill bugs. I have them in my Brampton garden- they love mulch. They’re supposed to be good guys, but I’ve seen them crawling all over my mophead hydrangea the other day, and they’re known to eat the roots of young/new plants. Diatomaceous earth works well against them.

Thanks Kerri! I don’t remember seeing these “pill bugs” in my gardens until now. Like the recent sighting of Japanese Beetles in the last two years here in this garden, I had never seen them in my previous homes/gardens. I think living so close to conservatory land of the Rouge River (my area) has some very interesting bugs. Luckily my garden is somewhat “mature”...as most plants are well rooted in...otherwise this recent invasion of the “pill bugs” will destroy them. I will definitely do some research on this. Thank you so much for your suggestion! 💚🪴🙏

Hi Tindle, I’m surprised that you are experiencing bugs on your hydrangeas. The only thing that gave me a little trouble is the “caterpillar” 🐛 like bugs wrapped on the young leaves at the beginning of the season on my Smooth Hydrangeas.....all I did was remove them from the leaves by hands to allow the leaf buds to open and grow. With aphids, you could use an insecticide soap spray...I will mention this soon. Thank you so much for watching Tindle! Ps. English is not my first language either so I too have to stop and think sometimes when I talk in English...just to gather my thoughts. In addition, public speaking is not my favorite thing to do so I get very nervous and say the wrong thing all the time. If you are able to understand what I say on the videos so your English is excellent!

@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christy, I “think” FL Tidbit - is a similar version of Bobo but the blooms are more “bun” like….and it may bloom later than Bobo. I have one FL Tidbit planted in May…it just started to flower….also it’s fairly young so it’s hard to tell for sure. Next year I will have a better comparison to share with you. However, from what I think right now, I don’t think there is any other dwarf panicle hydrangeas in the range of 2-3 ft that can surpass Bobo. Hope that helps. 💚🙏🪴
