And the news from Hornby just a few hours ago (6 Jan 2020) is that Hornby are to make a new tooling Rocket set to a much higher standard as is possible today. One set will be in a Tri-ang branded red box representing a significant company milestone from the 1960s. So a few wishes below may be satisfied as well as many others that did not even know they wanted a Rocket set.

Clever idea using magnets for traction , great looking set .......Peter

Definitely helps with traction. And also adds weight to the model. Perhaps I should have mentioned have very light this model is. But there is always too much to say about these subjects and am always thinking of things later that perhaps I should have mentioned. Thanks for watching Peter and taking the time to comment. Oscar

Oscar, i know you shouldn't do it, but i put a mixture of lighter petrol and oil in the smoker. Works marvelously for a couple of laps.

Amazing to think the model dates from 1963 and that Triang were brave enough to invest in designing and building it back then . Somehow I can’t see that happening now
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Russell, it seems an odd choice as well for a model at that time and as you say brave. They seem to have sold twice as many abroad as the did here in the UK. Pat Hammonds book it says it may have been the chairman's Walter Lines idea. Oscar

Hi Oscar, thank you for another great video presentation of a Tri-ang classic. I do have one of these but in poor mechanical condition. I only have one coach that is missing one buffer and also has a chip out of the luggage rack on the roof. Comparing it with the information you have given I would say mine is an early one. I don't run it but have it displayed in my cabinet. You mentioned that the coupler on the tender is a "standard D" coupler but close comparison would indicate that it is a special coupler having notches cut out to clear the wheel flanges. I also have one of the Rosebud Kitmaster Rockets that I bought and built as a child. It is currently dismantled for a rebuild and painting with a steady hand. Cheers Oscar, David.

Hi David, glad you enjoyed the video. I don't think these models were ever really made for to much running they are far too fragile with to many problems. Maybe just too optimistic for the materials and technologies available at the time. Still, it's a great looking model and I was very pleased to get it. One of the coaches ( I forget which one) has a step missing from the buffer shank. And you right about that coupler. I have to admit I had not noticed the difference. It seems that it's been stamped out halfway across the two holes that usually sit on the little the locating spigots on the chassis on other models. And as you say this accommodates the wheel flanges. Interesting to hear about your Rosebud Kitmaster Rocket. I would very much like to see that when you have rebuilt her. Another KZfaqr recently told me about the Dapol Kitmaster Rocket kit C046 that he had bought just the figures. I have also just bought the kit for the figures, But the bit I'm now struggling with is painting them. When I have finished them I'll have the Rocket out again with the Kitmaster crew on board and a look at the coupler on the tender. Oscar

Well perhaps you will spur me on to getting the Kitmaster done. I should buy a Dapol one just for the figures. I didn't mention that I also have the Airfix kit and it is still in it's blister pack unopened. I feel a video subject coming on. lol. David.

Fantastic model Oscar and so well described. I have seen Rocket at the Museum of Science And Industry in Manchester and often visit the station there from where it ran to Liverpool. I think the closest I will get to this model will be the Dapol (ex Airfix) kit.

It a great looking model and perhaps a bit of a novelty. I think quite a few people would want if available today especially with one of the great reliable motors now available with improved technologies. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

Great video (as always). I'm always curious about triangs planning department. maybe it's more of a reflection of the times, but it's funny how one can have the 1829 rocket running with the latest blue Pullman, with a gwr single and a Davey Crockett thrown in for good measure, but if you wanted to model a north eastern branchline you had the flying Scotsman and... um... the A1A diesel? maybe a gwr branchline? had the... uhh... hall? no, that came later... um... the blue Pullman?... or do we take our fun with model trains too seriously now?

Thanks glad you enjoyed the video, they must have good fun deciding which models to develop. As you say it does look a bit odd when you look back on the product list you wonder where they were heading with it at times. However, for me, it makes a terrific variety to collect and it's great fun. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

I really wish Hornby would reintroduce these, I've actually been making a loco of a similar time period which would work great with Robert Stephenson''s engine.

I think a number of people would like to see this model return, but with contemporary technology. Are you building you locomotive from scratch? it would be great to see. Oscar
@RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS
@RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS 6 жыл бұрын
Oscar Paisley It's a mostly scratch built 2-2-0 Planet class which actually uses a newer Bachmann motorized handcar in the tender for propulsion. I'm not quite finished with it yet as I'm trying to figure out how to hide the motor under a tender and still maintaining the small height, but I will definitely once it is finished.

Its amazing Tri-ang managed to made it work something that small, compared the technology they used/had. Too bad its way too fast to be realistic, and there's not much room to thinker with the drive, or the motor. My biggest issue with this loco, or the set is that it goes for a ridiculously high price lately, and its not something u gonna run frequently.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, It was never a very good seller here in the UK. They sold twice as many abroad. As you say the motor and gearing set up are far from perfect really don't allow any real control over the model. Coupled with the optimistic power pick system and with a very short wheelbase it's a miracle that they run at all. Evan more so when you consider they are 60ish years old. And you are right there is no room inside these models its almost all motor! However, the model in the late 60s lost its smoke unit in the chimney and gained a resistor in its place. Possibly this may have brought a greater degree of control to the model? And as to price! I think all model railway has become very expensive old and new. The set I have forme's part of a much-enjoyed collection of toy trains from another time and place in history. And like the rest of the collection will be seldom run. But when run, they will be enjoyed for what they are. Thanks again Tom for taking the time to watch and comment, it's much apricated. Oscar

Again, aren’t these great models considering the era they were made. The wealth of detail on the coaches alone is really good for the ‘60’s. I suppose it’s an easy fix to replace the oversized tension lock couplings with something more “scale like”, but that also takes away something about the charm of the set. Thanks for posting this video Oscar.

As you say excellent detail on these models for there age. Your right about the coupling its part of the charm of a model of this age. Thanks again, Andrew. Oscar
