Master Gunsmith Geoff Montgomery demonstrates his process of a professional Trigger Job on a Ruger New Model Blackhawk Single Action Revolver reducing the pull weight from an average of 4 pounds 2.1 ounces to 1 pound 6.9 ounces. During the course of the video you will see full disassembly, detail cleaning, honing of the trigger's sear, spring replacement, reassembly and test firing. This is just one example of trigger job services he offers at Wyoming Gun Company.

Very nice video. I did a more conservative job on the sear surfaces on my SBH by doing it with higher and higher grits of very fine grit sandpaper on a block to polish without changing the angle. I also installed a lighter trigger return spring and slightly bent the arms. I really differed by installing a /heavier/ mainspring. A lighter mainspring reduces the pull weight a little, but it increases locktime. The heavier mainspring makes for a slightly heavier break, but trades it for a crisper break and reduced locktime. It does require a firmer grip though since a massive hammer on a heavy spring will tend to slightly dip a revolver held limply.

Helpful and great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. I'd love to see how you tighten the cylinder gap on single actions that have a bit too much gap on them.

I own the Ruger Blackhawk 357 in stainless steel and it is the finest firearm in it's class that I have ever owned. The weight of the revolver helps with the recoil with the powerful 357 mag and the accuracy rivals a lot of long guns. I was and still am satisfied and impressed with it's performance straight out of the box and if I were to change anything on the revolver it would be the grips, i would switch from the brown wood grips to white, i just think that the white grips would look better with the stainless steel but I would change nothing on the performance of the revolver itself

Thank you for a great video. Excellent lighting, camera angles and narration. I do have a question concerning the trigger job itself: I noticed that you didn't do any smoothing or polishing of the hammer notch which engages the sear surface. Would it not be advisable to give that surface some attention also, so that you've got one polished surface interfacing with a similarly polished surface? Or is it not advisable to do that for some reason?

Nice job on the trigger, thank you for illustrating the procedure. Would you also stone the corresponding notch on the hammer, or reduce the hammer dog to help with that creep? Would you be able to work on the hammer with that same fixture?

Yep I’m not trying that on my own. Definitely needs a professional touch and the correct tools. I appreciate learning how it’s done.

Nice trigger job ! Question: why can't the trigger on the block be tight locked while honing? If I'm not mistaken, I see a small movement (rotation around the axis) of the trigger as you pull the hone back and forth. You only clamp with your thumb. Doesn't that result in a slight curvature of the surface? Or that has no influence?

Good question! I don't feel the tiny amount of "play" is of any significance or concern. The very edge of the engagement angle is all that matters and is preserved, anything behind that is a non-issue. Thanks for watching!!

Thanks for the video. Some questions... 1. You do not mention the transfer bar safety. Many people express that they believe the transfer bar ruins the trigger of the New Model revolvers. I disagree. I see nothing that the transfer bar does to make the trigger pull worse. But the "hot stove league" tends to say that any change to any mechanism "ruins the trigger pull". You do not address the transfer bar safety in this video. I take it that means it is insignificant. Correct? 2. . You did a lot of "stuff" between trigger pull tests. Thorough cleaning, change springs and stone and hone the hammer/trigger surfaces. How much could each be expected to improve the trigger pull? For example...if I just changed the springs and cleaned everything well, what could I expect?

I have a gunsmith friend who says he hates stainless revolvers because stainless is more "self honing", with use, than carbon steel, hence, less business for him! At any rate, I have 3 Blackhawks I love. A blue 45LC 4.625" with a very manageable factory action I'm satisfied with. A stainless 357 with a good action as well. Finally, a New Model Flattop 357 I got an embarrassingly good deal on that my wife loves. She has arthritic hands and cannot manage a DA revolver well at all. She took to shooting standard velocity 38s in this gun like a fish takes to water. Problem: (aside from her referring to it now as "her" gun) is that the Flattop action absolutely SUCKS. Big green ones! Rough as a proverbial cob! I'm thinking I might ship it to you for a badly needed trigger job. Ballpark figure.....How much would a job like you did in this video cost?

The only way that hammer could have hit the pin is if his Ruger was an Old MOdel. I had an A.D. on my Old Model BH. Almost sh*t my pants. Thumb slipped while walking the cylinder.. If he had a New Model, well, then he MUST have pulled the trigger... Only way that hammer could hit the pin..,.
@FyingShooter
@FyingShooter Жыл бұрын
You really didn't do anything to this trigger. If you want to make the trigger pull crisp you have to stone down the hammer hook to reduce the amount of engagement to get rid of creep. All the reduction of pull weight is by spring replacement.
