Hey Adam. For future reference; just jack the bike up (no paddock stand). When you remove the old shocks, the swing arm will relax down, but the bike frame will stay put. Easy one-person job.
@MotoGoato
@MotoGoato 4 жыл бұрын
axle stands under the footrest mounting brackets work well too, or even better - an ABBA stand (lifts the bike from the swingarm pivot)
@adammoore9088

It's also a lot easier if you do one shock at a time. The swing arm doesn't relax much when one shock is still in place.

I went for YSS rear shocks,as I couldn't justify the cost of Ohlins,or like the yellow......The YSS look and work beautifully,are much lighter than stock,and cost about half of the Ohlins. Progressive springs and adjustable preload caps up front, have made a big difference too,and together are a huge improvement over stock components, and good enough for fast road riding I have found. Love my Speed Twin,and great videos....👍

I also fitted a pair of Ohlins Thruxton R shocks to my Speed Twin. As Adam says they are stiffer but the improved damping is very noticeable. I really like them. I fitted some black springs, I will be fitting an Andreani cartridge kit in the new year. Great vids Adam

Adam, love your bike, I just got a 2020 in the same color. I too added the ohlins shocks, and have found from doing this is the past, if you place a scissor jack on the rear tire, and turn it up to where it just putting pressure on the underside of the fender, it allows you to move the rear of the bike up and down, to help you get the shocks on very easily. I did this when putting mine in, and was done with the job in 20 mins, this was taking my time and wiping things off as well. Thanks for the great videos

Hi Adam, loving your channel and you seem to swear when doing jobs, just like me when I drop stuff etc. Nice shocks and I'm hoping to get a speed twin when funds allow. A useful tip when changing shocks is to do one at a time, so the other is supporting most of the bikes weight while you work. I learnt that one the hard way too!

Probably been said already below, but change them one at a time whilst bike is on side stand, easy job for one person that way. It will sag when one spring is off, but with it on the side stand, to fit the replacement spring simply pull the bike up towards you a little whilst its leaning on the side stand.

I went with KTech Razor rear shocks and Tec Bike Parts front springs and adjustable preload caps. The rear shocks make a huge difference if you ride this bike a brisk or faster pace. The fronts were a less noticeable change. Will go with a front cartridge refit once the piggy bank fills back up.

Did you set the spring pre load and measure sag? Also, how did you have the bike supported - center stand? Center jack? Seems you don't want the bike on a paddock stand for this job? Nevertheless - job done and it looks great.

I am thinking about getting these myself. The back end really is a bit skittish at about 80+. It's noticeable how it suddenly feels planted down again when speed drops below a certain point 80-85mph. Big investment though.

Do you know how the silver allen bolt on the clutch box next to the Triumph logo is named? I am talking about the one that is visible at 3:32 at the bottom of the bike. I've had mine stolen on my Street Scrambler and who knows for how long I've been riding without it! Do you have any idea about its purpose? Is it to just hold the frame together?

I've yet to try a bike with Ohlins that was reasonably comfortable on public roads (at least not on our winter-beaten canadian roads)...they are high quality, they look good, but they are really better on a racetrack than on the road. I've ridden many, spent a ton of cash on having them adjusted, revalved, resprung, always ended up hating them (I even sold my 1200 Scrambler because of the Ohlins...after spending nearly 1000$ to have them improved). It will improve handling, give it a sporty ride, but comfort...no. Ohlins is now on my black list.

I totally agree, I am also not a big fan of Ohlins for the road, Although I did read the Ohlins set-up on the Ducati 950 Supersport S is supposed to be very good, not sure what spring rates they use.

Good job man, looks great. It's funny, the reason I went with the thruxton R instead of the speed twin was for the suspension. I just ended up swapping out the spoke wheels for the speed twins cast wheels. So I guess you could say I went the opposite way you did to land in almost the same place 😛

Hello, Can you give a little more info on your wheel swap? Im interesting in some spoke wheels for my Speed Twin too. Thx
@gonzo221
@gonzo221 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnpoon8 hey, no problem man. It's a straightforward swap. There's no modification needed at all. All the hardware is the same. Just find some spoked wheels from a thruxton, install the guide tube and bearings then use the wheels spacers from your speed twin. I would advise that you use new disc bolts when you swap over the rotors as the heat cycling can weaken them over time. I got a nice set of titanium bolts from A&J Cycles. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Title this how not to replace rear shocks! Don't ever do this on a paddock stand as the weight of the bike is loading the shocks. Get a lift or jack to lift the bike in the middle as that will unload the shocks. Change them one at a time...easy! You do not need two people...you just need to know what you're doing. Preload is not a substitute for shock length...they are two different things.
