Why do we attribute such little value to high-mileage motorcycles? Most people think this has to do with the shorter life span of motorcycles, but it is our contention that this has more to do with the laws of supply and demand on the open market of second-hand motorcycles. That market is inundated with low-mileage "garage queens" that completely obliterate the demand for high-mileage bikes.

With the possible exception of large capacity tourers and Adventure bikes it is probably correct to say that most modern motorcycles do not usually have high mileages but it is also correct that modern manufacturers build their motorcycles to very high tolerances so almost all bikes today are easily capable of coping with their in-built performance for high mileages. However, problems often start if a higher mileage bike has it's routine maintenance (especially engine oil and filter changes..) and servicing neglected and/or is continually ridden at the very top of it's performance (unlikely for a large capacity bike because there is nowhere this is possible other than a race track !..) but if a bike has been well maintained and serviced there is absolutely no reason to assume that high mileage matters, in fact I usually look to buy a bike somewhere in the middle of the average mileage range because personally I believe that not riding a bike for long periods or at all can be just as bad for it's health as riding it hard for high mileages.. I bought my 2013 Tiger 800 XC ABS just over a year ago with 21500 miles on the clock, and many of my friends seemed to think I was taking a big risk on a bike with mileage that high but I maintain it regularly (usually sooner than Triumph's recommended service intervals) and ride it to work and for pleasure almost every day all year round, so far I've had no problems.. touch wood !.. A good example of a sensible attitude towards mileage is the classic motorcycle fraternity who are largely uninterested in mileage and it is not often quoted in ads of classic bikes for sale unless they are placed by individuals who buy and sell bikes solely for 'investment' and who are often not even motorcyclists (you know who you are..) - Classic riders often ride in the evenings and at weekends just like the riders of modern bikes so I would think that on average their annual mileages are fairly similar though most classic riders will probably not be pushing their bike to the top of it's performance very often. The main difference between classic and modern riders is the depth and frequency of maintenance and the depth of mechanical knowledge - Classic riders are usually much more involved in their bike's mechanical parts and perform maintenance tasks much more frequently than their modern bike riding counterparts and they usually buy their bikes the old fashioned way, they listen to the engine, try the gearbox and brakes, check wheel and chassis bearings etc.. to assess a bike's condition rather than going by low mileage and shiny paint alone. They also tend to assess the seller, because someone who is so mechanically inept as to require assistance unlocking the door of their own garage which is completely devoid of tools is unlikely to have much mechanical sympathy or to have done much maintenance !! Overall then, the moral of this tale is to use the mileage as an 'advisory' - Search for a bike that looks and sounds like it's been mechanically looked after (service history obviously helps here but is not absolutely essential..) from someone who doesn't look like they'd struggle to handle a job more mechanically complex than switching on a PC and you'll probably be just fine...

You're right: regular maintenance is key, and I also have a distrust for bikes that have been sitting in a garage for long periods of time. They are meant and designed to be ridden! In any case, your Tiger still has a lot of miles in her! Nice comparison with the classic bike scene. Everything you say is true, but on the other hand, classic bikes are mechanically much simpler, with higher tolerances, basic materials, etc. In other words, they can be infinitely repaired and brought back to their original condition. I don't know whether that's the case with modern bikes, or at least not to the extent of classic bikes. Thanks for your excellent comment, and enjoy the Tiger!

@@Lowfliers the problem of bike with high mileage is the ZERO POSSIBILITY to sell again. If you buy (and there are good bike of max 30000 km for low money) a bike with low mileage, probably you will keep it for 2 years and you will be able to sell it without too much money of difference. I have bought in 2018 an xc 800 with 29000km for 6200 euro. I have sell it for 5900 after one years and 7000km more. At 36000 km. If you try with a 70000km bike is not possibile. A lot of guys buy bikes but is not the right one for them. No good feeling, or too high or too heavy and they want simply change it in a few time. I am italian. Sorry for my bad english

@@Kaysersoza Hi there. You're right. That's exactly the point we wanted to make: high-mileage motorcycles are often worthless, not because they are worn out, but because there will always be too many examples of the same bike with very little miles. Thanks for your comment! Ciao. Hai ragione. Questo è esattamente il punto che volevamo sottolineare: le moto ad alto chilometraggio spesso sono inutili, non perché sono usurate, ma perché ci saranno sempre troppi esemplari della stessa moto con pochissimi chilometri. The ONLY reason you need to be cautious for higher mileage motorcycles, is if the owner raced it and ignored maintenance. Since 2019, I have a Honda 2014 VFR1200X with 105K in on it. Bought it with 89K. It did 12K a year meaning more highway than engine wrecking city traffic riding. But let's keep the true value of higher mileage motorcycle a secret so we can benefit from it ;)

Correct. Maintenance such as frequent oil changes are key. Some common sense also goes a long way. For example, sometimes I see riders redlining a cold engine. That's not going to help. Agreed on keeping the value of high mileage motorcycles a secret. ;-)

Have a 2002 TDM900 I've owned for 14 years. I've thrashed it, took on on trackdays etc. Gets an oil change once a year and that's it. It's now at 113K. Modern bikes are bulletproof.

I drive a 2014 Tiger 800XC with 133.000 km on the clock. Bought it with 124.000 for about half the price a lower milage Tiger would go. The bike has been solid apart from the usual regular wear parts. It does help it has been serviced by a Triumph dealer for all it's lifespan.

How's your bike going two years later? Here in Australia it is pretty common to see high mileage motorcycles (and cars for that matter). And what nobody would touch in Europe because of the high miles is being advertised as low k's here. All a matter of perspective. And maintenance.

My Tiger XC runs.for.10 ten years now and has 94.000 on the clock. No extra oil consumption. First clutch, only changes of batteries, brake disks and front springs and Steering head bearings . I know a driver who has 165.000 on the clock and he takes it all over Europe and a lot off road. Got it for half price with 40.000 six years ago.

Nice vid. I am definitely guilty of “kilometrism” / “mileism” when searching for a new ride. I guess this comes from the old school thoughts of smelly, oil dripping bikes. Maybe I will see 6 figures on my Tiger some day. 🤞

From my experience, the only case/reason, for a low value in high mileage motorcycles, is when there is no service history. As an example, if a 10,000km motorbike has been neglected, the second owner can make up for it without worrying of any long-term damages. But if this gets repeated over several 1000's of km with multiple owners, and you have absolutely no idea whether the motorbike has been abused or not, then its value is lowered. From where I come from, most second hand motorcycles still retain their value and the reason is that (1) we do not have extreme climates (no snow, no long-term rain or similar rough weather, etc), (2) our culture is very "machine-friendly" and you find that motorcycle owners actually take good care of their bikes - in fact, you rarely see motorcycles parked outside overnight (only mopeds and scooters), and most motorcycle owners have a garage, (3) service shops are pretty affordable and therefore most motorcycles have good service history. To give you an idea a second hand 2014 Triumph tiger with 30,000km (and full extras + hard luggage) could easily go for EUR8,000
@Lowfliers
@Lowfliers 3 жыл бұрын
True, service history is very important in retaining as much value as possible. But in your example, how much would that same 2014 Tiger be worth if it had 80,000 or 100,000 km on the clock? Probably only a fraction of that 8,000 euros, right? But it could still be a properly serviced and very reliable bike?

Coolant temperature constantly shifts even in a good bike. In cars it stays sharp at 90 centigrades. When my car started to shift temperature due to a rust valve, it started to burn more oil and I had to sell that car. Now, in my marvelous versys 1000 2015 the temperature shifts from 55 to 100 degrees and it seems fine. But no way it can last not even near a car can.
