2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XCx Review
www.revzilla.com/common-tread/...
For 2015, the Tiger 800 XCx gets a long list of updates and improvements. Without any major changes since its 2010 introduction, the previous generation was getting a bit long in the tooth. Both the XC and the XCx received an updated gearbox, an all-new throttle-by-wire system claimed to improve fuel efficiency by 17 percent, switchable traction control coupled with the updated ABS package, and an adjustable WP suspension designed to tackle duties both on and off the road. The XCx version goes one step further with additional hard parts, such as crash bars, plastic hand guards, an aluminum skid plate, and a center stand. An advanced computer provides information on fuel consumption, hours and miles traveled, and the ability to enable self-canceling turn signals. But the real upgrade is the electronics package. Riders get to choose from three modes: On Road, Off Road, and Rider mode, the last of which is completely programmable. Once in Rider Mode, you can choose from four different throttle maps, Rain, Off-Road, Road, and Sport, ranging from least to most sensitive. Throw in class leading electronic cruise control and you have a bike that is not only a huge improvement over its predecessor, but is also a substantial leap for ADV motorcycling as a whole.

As a 2014 Tiger owner I can say that this review is absolutely spot on. It's great to see that the reviewer knows what he's talking about and has tested it properly rather that the rubbish we get these days from the bike mags - half an hour ride at the launch. Well done - look forward to more.

This is by far the best review of the 800xcx on KZfaq. In terms of quality, production, editing and composition. I love the subtle jungle connotations throughout the video. No shenanigans, no gimmicks but both brick bats and roses. Thank you for hitting the right notes when it comes to bike reviews! Very informative. I would love to see some visual hints on the technical aspects which tend to get too verbose when Spurgeon is talking.

Hands down...the BEST review quality ever! You guys do an awesome job in reviews and this review is great too. This is a high quality production that answers the questions I would ask, but doing so in a manner that makes me want this bike. So refreshing to get an English speaking reviewer, instead of another Aussie or Brit. I was beginning to wonder if anyone in America were doing reviews. No offense to the people across the pond, but I like to understand what is being said. Oh...I love this bike. Great job....i am subscribing.

The best part of the review was the blunt honesty. I've owned a dozens of off road, dual sport and street bikes and anyone who is honest about their reviews of the new found "adventure" bikes knows that a 490 lb bike is not a good choice for adventuring off road and is more suited to fire roads or something similar. Last year, I visited with a Triumph dealer and discussed the overall dishonesty of several bike manufacturers who give the impression their "adventure" bikes are suitable to be ridden in places where either true dual sports or off road bikes can. Perpetuating the dishonesty are several of the bike magazines who publish photos of these "adventure" bikes being modestly jumped off of small hills and slid around dirt tracks. Come on guys...stop sucking misinformed new riders onto these bikes. The Triumph is great for what it's intended for not true off road riding.
@HandsomeNamed
@HandsomeNamed 6 жыл бұрын
The 800 and 1200cc adventure bikes are for long range while not being contained to just sealed roads like a tourer or cruiser. They are adaptable and great for interstate journeys in countries like Africa or Australia where road conditions are not guaranteed for all legs of the journey. You cannot ride a dedicated dirt/trail bike for hundreds of miles on end. All the advertisements and promotions I've seen for adventure bikes seem to be fairly on point about the purpose of these machines. If someone thinks they are suited for flogging through mud in a forest, well that's unfortunate. But where exactly would they get that impression? These bikes consistently sell very well, so the intended audience seem to be getting the right message.
@kymstock1852
@kymstock1852 2 жыл бұрын
@@HandsomeNamed I recently sold my Tiger 800 XCx 2015 model. I did 40,000km on Australian roads ( sealed and dirt roads) until Covid lockdowns stopped me travelling. The Tiger was good at covering the long distances and handled well. Is is a dirt bike? No. As with most of these ADV bikes it weighs too much to throw down a rough single trail, unless you are a muscular MX pro rider riding someone else's bike. Although I never dropped the bike at speed I did manage to break a few plastic body armour bits ( expensive to replace). The front fender is fragile when using knobby tyres. Rocks get caught in the side knobs and rotate smashing the fender attachment points. Fender riser kits don't address this. The windshield is useless. Gear ratios are a bit weird. First is too high and 6th is a 1:1 ratio, not overdrive. However 6th being 1:1 was great on sandy outback roads where all i had to do was throttle on and off, rather than continually changing up and down as the F800 guys were doing. Suspension and frame worked well and saved my butt a few times.

@ALTMED
@ALTMED 9 жыл бұрын
Spurgeon Dunbar Actually no. it's very rare to see someone buying a dual sports bike in here though you'd see all kinds of other bikes. They mostly buy ATVs for riding them in the sand since there is plenty of it here. I have a 2014 V-strom though; I bought it to ride long distances and some touring, also because of its price and comfort.

Well done Spurgeon! I'm keeping the stock tires for now and staying mainly on asphalt. May be a set of TKC 70's in my kitten's near future though. I came off a Deauville for the Tiger so the throttle issue was noticeable for me but just as you pointed out, it's not a problem after getting used to it, in fact it's fantastic. The computer is indeed wonky to navigate but I switch between 2 modes only, road and offroad, so even though it feels awkward to have to reach for the console to switch modes, it's infrequent. The cruise control is highly worthy. I did drop 6 clicks on the rebound and compression on the front and 1.5 counter clockwise turns on the back which did make it handle better for me offroad. I would add that the stock windshield is inadequate. I replaced it with a madstad before the break-in service at 600 miles. Looking forward to more from you!
@SpurgeonDunbar
@SpurgeonDunbar 9 жыл бұрын
Matt Bickford I appreciate it Matt. From reading your posts it sounds like not only are you an avid rider, but also one who has had a lot of experience with different bikes. I enjoy reading all of the feedback you are leaving for other riders on here. The TKC 70's are supposedly a great tire. I have used the TKC 80's already and those bad boys just don't hold up on the street for the amount of miles I put on bikes. I was pleasantly surprised with the Mitas E-07s, they handled surprisingly better on the street than I had thought they would. If you end up trying a set of the TKC 70's before I do I would be interested in your thoughts. If you're ever rolling through the northeast, make sure to look me up, first round is on me!

What is the street value of the recommended upgrades you suggested in the video? Trying to get an idea of total price along with upgrades. I'm 6'2'' 230 so I'm not sure 490lbs is a big deal for the kind of fire road riding I'm looking to do here in Oregon. Great vid and review btw!
@SpurgeonDunbar

I ended up buying this bike after the review. I did a one year follow-up article ( www.revzilla.com/common-tread/triumph-tiger-800-xcx-a-year-of-abuse-in-review ) and I am wrapping up a final modifications article as we speak. So far I have invested about $2,500 into modifications to make this bike better off-road. With that being said, modifications depend on how far you want to go off-road. All things considered, you can get away pretty close to stock depending on how far you want to go off-road. If you're just sticking to fire roads I'd start by upgrading the tires, crash bars, radiator guards, and hand guards ($700-$900). From there you start to learn along the way. Please feel free to ask any additional questions and I'll happily answer anything that I can.

Best review ever!! Allthough the rear shock doesn't need protection from a guard, it's very rugged. I aggree on the protection being a bit basic. I think the main weight loss you can do is an aftermarket exhuast to loose 3 or maybe 4kg. Bought mine and cannot wait to start riding.

I've been riding & reading (about) motorcycles for over 45 years now. That was a damn good review. I own a Triumph Tiger Explorer XC myself, and you are spot on about the oversensitive throttle. I would have liked a bit more comment about the Tiger compared with the BMW F800GS though. My understanding is that it creams the GS big time? Other than that, an excellent production. VERY impressed.

Graeme Blore I appreciate the kind words! My apologies on the lack of F800 tie in on the video. Like I said below, my producer kept telling me to talk less so the BMW stuff didn't make it in. Check out my response below on Ike6116's comment. Essentially the F800GS feels more like a big dirt bike while the Tiger feels like a tall street bike. The new XCx pushes the Tiger's dirt capability even further while simultaneously improving street capabilities with the addition of traction control and electronic cruise control. The one big advantage the BMW has is that the gas tank lives underneath the seat. It really lowers the center of gravity and the Beemer just feels lighter. The Triumph on the other hand wears it's fuel up high like a camel's hump. Like I said, take a look at the comment I made below and check out the Common Tread article (www.revzilla.com/common-tread/triumph-tiger-800-xcx-review). If you have any additional questions I would be happy to try and tackle them for you! Thanks again for watching!

Test rode the XC yesterday and loved it. Just trying to decide if the extra lowercase x is worth the cost difference.

+moulin6801 Here's what Spurgeon had to say in his written review: www.revzilla.com/common-tread/triumph-tiger-800-xcx-review "The direct competition for the Triumph XCx is clearly the BMW F 800 GS. When similarly outfitted with accessories, the F 800 GS costs roughly $14,000, in the same range as the Tiger 800 XCx’s $13,499. Traditionally, the F 800 GS has outshined the Tiger in the dirt while the Tiger has excelled on the pavement. I have spent the past six months logging miles on RevZilla’s F 800 GS and it feels like a giant dirt bike, whereas the Tiger feels like a tall street bike. Triumph’s main goal with these updates was to get closer to the off-road performance of the BMW while further improving the Tiger’s street pedigree, and they succeeded."

Thank you. I'm considering this to be my first bike. I will be doing a lot of commuting for work, but driving up 6,000 to 8,000 elevation on the freeway.

If you've never ridden before, you may want to start on a smaller bike such as the BMW G650GS. If you're comfortable with the weight and power of the Tiger, though, then go for it. -DrewZilla

I live in Eastern Canada. This spring I had the opportunity to put about 300 miles on a 2014 Tiger 800 through the mountains in Utah. My 1st impression was "Wow, what a nice bike!" We rode up to an altitude of 9600 feet with no change in performance that I could recognize. There was also about 50 or so miles on not so good gravel roads which it handled very nicely although I could have done them on my own bike, mine would have been less pleasant. At the end of the trip my impression was the same as the first "Wow, what a nice bike! Besides enjoying the dickens out of the ride, I realize I spent a lot of time trying to sell myself the bike. After all, it's a "Really Nice Bike" - but nothing about it felt anything like a dirt bike. It was just a "Really Nice Bike"! (OK, last time I promise). Perhaps it was just not my style, perhaps at the age of 57 I'm just too traditional for all that refinement. My biggest, perhaps my only complaint was the fly by wire, it lacked feel and made pull away vague and impersonal. Several years ago I had a Buell Ulysses for a day, it actually felt like a big dirt bike, was fun on a dirt road and inspired more playful confidence, it felt much lighter, had a livelier bottom end and lower center of gravity, too bad their gone. In Utah I swapped the Tiger out for my hosts Thunderbird 1700. Now that impressed me, although I am not a cruiser rider that bike could win me over and left a big impression. Experiencing both bikes really sold me on the overall great feel and quality construction of Triumph, they were the 2nd and 3rd triumphs I ever rode, the 1st being a short ride on a 1969 (Tiger or Bonny I'm not sure, it was 35 years ago) 650 - which I also liked. Thinking I was all primed up I got home and cracked my bike out of storage and did a little shake down run. I was not primed, if anything I was lulled into complacency. My bike reacquainted me in the first minute why some of us just "Have to ride". I always know my place on my bike and it drew the line of where Motorcycle evolution peaked the day before Computercycles were born. Free from fly by wire and fuel injection yet fully evolved in Horse power, stability, dependability and dripping in personality. Its name an Icon of the style and notoriously recognized by people never have and never will ride, your Granny probably knows it; -Is it one of those "Ninja Bikes"? Yes it is, 2003, last year of the ZX9R Ninja 900. No fuel injection, fly by wire or even fuel gauge. The only bike in it's class without a counter balancer - because it was built right and didn't need one. And the first mass production machine off the show room floor of any kind or wheel count to do the quarter mile in less than 10 seconds, even with stock tires (it was in the 90's with a professional rider and it took many runs, I found the record once but now I can't). There are bikes a few tenths quicker but I can't tap the Ninjas potential so what difference would it make? and they are all speed limited to 299 kilometers per hour. Since the first time I rode this bike, every ride I took on any another bike was eclipsed by getting back on mine, it never gets old. It is a nice bike but my bike is not "Nice", has any one ever tried to set you up on a blind date and said "She or He is Really "Nice"" How did that work out for you? It is a sad reality that more and better somehow become less inspiring. Before "I" decide what road to take I don't want to discuss it with my bikes computer. I don't want how well I ride to be largely influenced by how well I can tweak my rides computer. Are we replacing inspiration and emotional response with "Tech"? We strive for such perfection, perhaps I've missed a few things along the road, or perhaps the computer generation is missing every thing that's real.

Great review... I really enjoyed watching it and somewhere because of this review I bought tiger 800 xcx. I want to know whether it's worth going for outex kit for the spoke wheels and if you have puncture can it sealed with normal puncture repair kit for tubeless tyres without any problems and will the outex last for the life of the spoke Thanks in advance and thanks for great review which helped me to decide the my adv...
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 6 жыл бұрын
Outex is definitely an option, but it can be difficult to do correctly. Also, you can only do it on the rear wheel, because the front wheel cannot safely accept a tubeless tire. Therefore, you would still need to use a tube in the front tire and replace the tube if punctured. For the rear tire, you could use a tubeless tire and tubeless puncture repair kit. -DrewZilla
