Today we’re looking at a bend I learned from watching a video that Joe Bonamassa posted to his instagram.
In this video, Joe is noodling around on a 335 and at one point he plays a bend that starts on the root note of the key he’s playing in and goes up by a tone and a half.
It’s a really wide bend that caught my attention instantly, and ever since I heard Joe play it for the first time, I’ve pretty much been throwing it into any solo that I can!
In this video, I demonstrate a lick of my own that uses this same bend and I talk you through my thought process behind it in terms of how it works when played over the I to IV chord transition in a blues progression.
The lick I demonstrate is taken from a package of Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson inspired licks that you can find on my website - it’s called ‘Spicy Licks - Package 1’ and it contains 10 licks inspired by the lead playing styles of Bonamassa and Johnson.
Not only do you learn 10 licks and get the TAB files + backing track, you also get breakdowns of the main concepts used in the licks including odd-note groupings, spread voice triads, picking technique advice and something I like to call the mixolydian triad pair.
