These vintage Maytags are still really great washers! Here's what you should know: When the transmission is leaking oil from anywhere, it usually means it is taking in water from the tub. In fact, it's usually the water pressure from the tub that pushes the oil out. There are a few o ring seals inside the transmission plus the seal you installed, but most importantly, there's a center seal that's easy to access, right under the agitator, just in the transmission shaft housing. It's a 20 minute repair at best. However, once water gets in the transmission, the shaft will eventually seize, unless you clean out the transmission first. The good news is: This machine is STILL worth keeping. It's just due for a refurbish, after which it should give you another 20 - 30 years of care free service. New washers don't last nearly as long. You could replace this transmission or you'll need to clean it out good if you want to keep this one, otherwise it's probably going to seize. If you want to refurbish it, here's what I recommend replacing: The mounting stem and tub seals, the (upper) tub bearing, the lower transmission shaft bearing, belts and internal water intake hose (and siphon break) - and MAYBE the spin brake (be careful with that one). Probably run you around $400 in parts but this washer is well worth it, trust me. If you simply replace the transmission, it's about a day's worth of work, maybe two for the inexperienced. You'll also need a spanner wrench to get the inner tub out (I believe it's a clockwise thread to loosen, btw). You should be able to find one on ebay. You may need to cut the spanner nut off with a moto tool if it won't turn. There should be a new nut in the mounting stem kit. There's a guy online that has a great video on refurbishing this washer. I think his channel is Lorain Furniture and appliance. Come to think of it, I think he offers a refurbish kit for this make with everything you need on his website. Check it out. Hope that helps and good luck! One more word of caution: If you choose to replace the transmission, make sure you get the right transmission for your washer. You could get another helical drive (like the one you have) or an orbital which looks different and gives shorter more aggressive wash strokes. Either one will work in your washer just as long as you get the right size for the tub capacity. Here's how to tell the difference: If your agitator has 4 holes down the side, you have an extra large tub. If it has 3 holes, it's a large capacity. For large capacity, the water fill slider or button will only have small medium and large. The extra large tub will allow you to select extra large.The large capacity transmission will be longer and the extra large transmission will be shorter. If you get the wrong size, it won't fit.

my mom's Maytag that she bought in 1986 did the same exact thing that was a fine machine. She sold it to the neighbors when she moved in 2001. I have a video of it on KZfaq when it was in possession of the neighbors.
