For those who want to know what overlay is, Overlay is typically that layer effect that does retuning to your colors in your drawing depending on the color you choose, if you choose bright white it will look more like an over saturated [Add (Glow)], but if you choose a mid tone color, its best to use it on reflections where clear light bounces off any part of the character (usually lights that surround the character). Alternatively though, overlay can be used in dynamic ways to readjust the entire tone of the character (fully-shaded and everything) kind of like Multiply, an example of its best use is with warm colors (such as orange-yellow) usually when the character is found in a summer environment (by this i mean, clear sunlight or sunrise), for this example, you would use an orange color, thats a little over the mid-tone and not desaturated with an opacity below 50%. One last thing, if you use dark colors with overlay, it will look like a really bad blend of add (glow) that doesnt really glow so its best to stay away from dark colors when using overlay, unless you want to be REALLY subtle. Which is why overlay really shines (literally) when used with mid-tone to light-tone colors. :)

From what I understood overlay to be it’s like a mix of multiply and screen - it makes the lighter portions of a drawing even lighter, and the darker portions even darker depending on what colour value you use and the value of the drawing. I tend to use it at the end of my drawings, make a full duplicate of the art piece, play around with colour values and set it to low opacity in overlay- or even just airbrush different colours on to give it a pop in variety of colour and values.

So I’ll try to explain overlay a little bit. Overlay takes the color and overlays the color on top of the drawing. Let’s say you were to take a material texture. If you put overlay, and lower the opacity, your drawing will have that “texture.” In other words, it takes a certain color (or other things) and makes it overlay on top of your drawing. Another example for color is, if you take a yellow and overlay it on top of a blue or such, and then lower the opacity, your drawing will have a tinge of yellow. Depending on how you use it, it can be used to make your drawing more vibrant, or add more texture. Edit: After doing a little bit of experimentation, I’ve realized that it doesn’t exactly give your drawing a yellow “tinge,” it lightens the drawing. I recommend to experiment a lot for overlay because it doesn’t exactly have a specific function :D I’m not to good at explaining either so I hope his helps ☆

I use overlay to add colors on my grey drawings and give them a better color liveliness than if started off by coloring from the get-go without the grey

I use overlay for adding textures and fixing some mistakes by applying it and using unsaturated colours

Overlay Darker gray levels/ colors will darken an image. Black with the max effect. Lighter gray levels/ colors will lighten an image. White with the max effect. So if you overlay an image on itself...more contrast.

Something to add to the comments that were already made about overlay: If you use a gray tone that is exactly 50% dark (aka if you use 50% opacity black over a white layer), Overlay has no effect on your drawing below. If your overlay layer is darker, it will darken the layer below, if it is lighter, it will lighten it. That way, you can eg add grain effects to your drawing. Start with a regular gray 50% darkness toned layer, add monochromatic noise and set the layer to either overlay (stronger effect) or soft light (weaker effect) and it will add texture to your drawing.
