This is awesome! Now of course we wanna see phasing tests, but I wanna see the engines phased so each bank fires evenly, into one 8-1 header on each bank! The sound would be INSANE! So that would be 360 crank degrees out, 180 cam degrees out. They'll fire into an 8-1 like a inline 8 would. That would be ideal exhaust header scavenging.

I want to see numbers for equal phasing vs. "in-between" phasing where one engine has a power stroke in-between the other's, so it would fire 1 1 8 8 4 4 3 3 6 6 5 5 7 7 2 2 with equal distance between each event. Maybe even combine that with a 360 degree offset to make 1 6 8 5 4 7 3 2 6 1 5 8 7 4 2 3

@@jckf yeah exactly. I imagine running them 360 out would be the best scavenging, but wouldn't be as cool a sound. Crossed over 180 degree style headers would make the best sound, and there's room to run header tubes between the engines.

This make sense V8 makes power at every 90⁰ of its rotation 45⁰ phasing will help to make power per revolution also putting more horse power engine at front and less horse power engine at back improve efficient crank loading u should use u joints or rubber coupling to connect both engines together if there is torque difference between drives there is twisting moment happen in drive shaft if u connect both engines side to side there will significant increase in horse power that means combination of two side to side engines coming in single shaft and torque will be 2.5 times

They phased them with the axle shaft spline. with the splines count they were able to phase it ~46 degrees

I think some 1950's dragsters did this... and, of course, think TV Tommy Ivo or Mickey Thompson doubled this with 4 engine dragster back in the day...

Its almost like how they research and testing an F1 engine, or at least, how they used to do. Build one cylinder, so if its good, u can multiply woth the cylinder number. 50hp one cylinder then u have 8 times 50hp or 10 or 12 times. Okay, its setup depends on the carbs, weight, the exhaust flow, etc, but this calculation works if everything works as its intended.

GMC actually made something similar to this for a while. For big vehicles like fire trucks they made a v12 engine which was basically two 351 v6 big block motors put together. I think they used one block but had 2 standard heads on each side. Those v6 engines were made from 1960-66 so I think the same years. It's called the twin 6 v12 if anyone wants to look it up.

@@THESLlCK these were gas v12 engines. They did make the v6 and v8 versions of this motor as diesel engines though. Just google gmc twin 6. You'll see.

Copied from an article on them "Contrary to popular belief, the Twin Six was not the simple union of two 351-cubic-inch engines welded together. The Twin made use of a unique single-piece block and one-piece crankshaft, the latter of which weighed 180 pounds. The Twin Six operated as if it were two separate V6 engines, however-it utilized four cylinder heads, four exhaust manifolds, two carburetors, and two distributors."

They do make alot of reverse rotation parts for 454s, for boats. So I always thought about coupling them at the flywheel. When i was younger I remember seeing a rail dragster (twin bears, I think) coupled the engines together by pushing the flywheels together, and both motors at 45 % angles and 8 exhaust pipes sticking up in the center. Wild idea fellas

The 3 ARP bolts holding the connecting shaft to the balancer on the engine connected to the dyno, is the best advertisement for ARP hardware there is. Three 5/16's bolts can handle 600 ft/bs of load 😳 The flywheel on the first engine had 6 or 8 of the same fastener.

Finally, I'm able to obtain the knowledge of "why/and how" Dragsters (back in the day) and Tractor Pullers (still doing this) stage their Engines "in-line" with each other! This has rotted my mind for some time. THANK YOU for this demonstration! My biggest question is "How and What is the Benefit"?

There is a guy here in town where I live that has a third gen Camaro with two Big blocks in it. One in normal location and the other in the passenger seat area. The two engines are connected using a V-drive gearbox from a speed boat that has been modified with another output yoke that's connected to a drive shaft that goes to the rear differential like any other camero would. It's freaking wild! He said it's like driving any normal car other than having a four or five hundred horsepower big block as your passenger instead of another person. He will openly admit that he has no idea what it will do because he simply hasn't got the balls to try LOL.

@@BubbaB43 V drive is a popular way to mount them side by side also. Front to back I've seen done with two sprockets of equal size. One mounted to the flywheel of the front engine, the other to the balancer of the rear engine and a double roller chain wrapped around both sprockets. Seems like less mechanical interference than the rigid spline that way too. There will always be some misalignment and that's why a coupler with some flex needs to be used. I think the shaft setup they have here would lead to early crank bearing failure.

Wow, what a cool episode from you two! Since projects, and Inlines are popular, I've got a true Old School Engine challenge for you guys, ---> Packard Straight 8! Specifically the later gen. versions like the 327 and 356 C.I. The reason being is because the bigger Packard Straight 8' blocks from the 1950's had "9 Main Bearings" versus every other Straight 8 makes. Perfect for doing a performance build, and even aTurbo build in the future.

Tommy Ivo built multi engine dragsters back in the early 1960s. Today, we see large multiples of engines in 'tractors' built for competition pulling. Fun to see this on the dyno to see exactly how they add up. 👍👍👍

@@markhenry5294 the 702 was a neat engine with peak torque just off idle. Unfortunately super long and it didn't take much frame flex to shear engine mounts. It would be nice to see what it could do with good 4 valve aluminum heads and and a high compression ratio. The 7.5 didn't provide much horsepower per gallon and the 2 barrel carb gave just enough to get it up to 60 mph

I'm surprised because, I didn't think it would have made that much power. I was thinking it would only make around 900 horsepower. It was impressive without a doubt. I didn't think it would double the horsepower, but for all practical purposes, it did. Great job guy's!!

I was very Impressed with your Excellent video. Well Done Gentlemen. You have just achieved what the inventor of the Jet Engine Mr Frank Whittle tried to achieve, but his Engine BLEW UP!!!!!!!!! Would that help? It's not really different now than driving uphill or downhill or whatever for the other engine. The other crank has to transfer all the power from the other one thats the real limit with setup like this

You'd lose the phasing effect. It could end up giving one side both the same stroke, so it wouldn't be smooth.

Thinking more like the clutch plate hub springs would lessen the slight phasing fighting as the engines run. Think of a single cylinder 4 cycle engine only has a power pulse for about 180 degrees of its 720 degrees of 4 cycles, but can still produce a net increase in engine RPMs... almost doesn't seem possible... but the flywheel action of crank and flywheel makes it work...

I grew up watching a few cars with twins and heard stories every day from the old timers about the Top Gas days. We used to race Nostalgia Eliminator #1 and back in the Goodguys days, Mike Kirby ran Sissel's twin six car regularly with two 250 style injected sixes inline for consistent 7.50 ets. Another twin six was the Clarke and Alred Twin AMC car from the same era. These were actually Late 60s comp eliminator D Dragsters running on a loophole in the rules for a few years. Then there was Jeep and Ronnie Hampshire who ran twin F85 Olds motors with custom 180 degree cranks in them, The Odd couple ran a Chrysler and a Small Block inline, John Peters and Bob Muravez ran the freight train out of Venice CA, there was a car with twin Pontiac Tempest 4s inline (1/2 of a 389 each) called Eight The Hard Way, Donnie Hampton even had a Corvette funny car with side by side twin small blocks. Thats just a few. Whenever I see a twin, I cant help but stop and check it out, they just scream cool!

I was thinking mirrored cam and crank, so instead of both engines firing 12345678 (o know that's not how theye fire but for example) they shoot 1,8 2,7 3,6 4,5 Ect, also I want yo know if there's a difference aligning TDC for both engines to start at the same point or if you stagger engine a and b

If they are 90 or 180 out there are still compressing two pistons at the same time. More interesting would be 45 degrees off so only one piston is compressing at a time

Crankshaft torsion on the output engine is probably a factor in the total power output. It'll be interesting to see if phasing makes any noticeable difference but with 16 cylinders even an odd fire engine will run pretty smoothly. Maybe a flexible coupling between the two would make more power just because it would help with softening the firing pulse harmonics. Good job guys it'll be interesting to see more results. Thanks

I saw a 66/67 Nova with a pair of 4.3 V6s at Pomona Street Legal Drags several years ago. The builder was making passes after changing the way the engines were phased to one another. He had a single distributor between the engines made from a Jag V12 piece. He would change the firing order to match how he phased them, then go make another pass. I can't remember the results because something failed (distributor drive setup/engine coupler?) He said it made a difference in power, but I don't remember details. Pretty crazy street car.

so, this has been done before, just not really with stuff like this. Detroit diesel 2 stroke engines were just bolted together if their cylinder count was greater than 8. a 12v was two V6's, and a 16v was just two V8's. That said, the phasing of the stroke can greatly affect vibrations here. phasing these engines 180 degrees apart would likely help with crank vibrations.

There was a 12V71 all single block, the 16V71, 16V92 were 2 V8's connected together I never heard of 2 V6 engines being connected I drove a truck with a 6V53, I can tell you it would be a waste of time and money to put 2 of those together

I worked on several multi-engine cars before. SBC 302 CI / 5 Liter engines were connected to 6 speed transaxles. There was no hard connection between engines. One engine / trans in front, one engine / trans in rear. Front engine placed engine first with trans in front. Mass of engine closer to center of car. Engines synced electronically. With no drive-lines used, no tunnel in cockpit. Both considered mid-engine, because engines sat behind wheels. If we do decide to hard link engines together, we will add a clutch so one engine can be running, the other not running. Better gas mileage around town, and we can alternate what engine is running. This spreads wear more evenly. Car has 3 modules; cockpit, front power, rear power units. Each power unit has everything needed to run, including fuel. Entire power module can be swapped in under 5 minutes. Pull into the pits, get fresh engines, new tires, and fuel, leave pits ready for next hour at Le Mans. End result 4 WD / 4 WS with over 2,500 HP. Since each engine was only producing 1,250 HP reliability was increased versus 1 engine creating 2,500 HP alone. Engines were using twin charging: two screw supercharger on engine being force fed large amounts of pressurized air from turbochargers. Able to get much better linear power curve than with turbos alone. If turbo spins twice as fast, it produces 4 times more pressure. Resulting power curve increases exponentially. Combo helped tame engines, even good at low RPM on the streets. Not bad for a 5 Liter engine making 5 HP / Liter. This prototype is good for 300 mph / 483 kph plus. We have a BBC 4 engine prototype with over 10,000 HP. It is good for over 500 mph / 805 kph. Waiting for Michelin or Goodyear to supply tires that won't melt or fly apart. Tires are the limiting factor for Landspeed applications. When building identical engines, you will never get exactly the same power. You can get pretty close though. Even running same engine at different times of day will result in different power output. Shop temperature, barometric pressure, fuel temperature, etc can all effect power. Remember IROC.... identical cars and engines. Engine supplier was able to match them within 5 HP plus or minus.

Watching these Video's reminds me of watching "HORSEPOWER TV and TRUCKS!" with my Dad every Saturday Morning. Before his passing (due to Ahltimers), we made the best for 4 year attending as many "GOOD GUYS" Car Shows and Swap Meets... I just wish I listened/retained more Knowlage when I was younger! He was a BOEING Engineer since 1960 working to Stealth and Nuclear Engineering.

Tying two engines together actually does have a practical use. Out west in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles I’ve seen several instances of two big block V8’s tied together as power units powering deep irrigation wells in the Oglala aquifer. They’re not as common as they used to be, with big Cat and Cummins natural gas engines taking their place but they still are in use.

Great video and testing. Good that you’re using 4130 cranks especially on the rear engine. Have you calculated the actual “twist” the extra torque is putting on the rear crank? Just wondering how many degrees early the timing is in the rearmost cylinders because of the extra twist. Great job guys!

yes, when Detroit Diesel did these bolt together designs, the crank was either cast from a single piece, or the crank was bolted together at the block split.

This is something i've been interested in seeing done professionally for ages. Even had schematics and some drawings laid out back in the latter 90's early 2000's. I've a 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile, the 4 door kind that if you rolled all 4 windows down, it looks like a stretched 2 door. I had it planned out to pull the 455 out and modify the vehicle into a 2 seater, basically eliminating most of the trunk, putting the dash and drivers seat basically just ahead of the rear wheels and transplanting 2x 455s under an extended hood for that vehicle. I even had a crazy heavy duty electric clutch on hand that would fit between both engines allowing me to operate only one if need be (obviously the one closest to the firewall) and allowing me to fire up the 2nd one on a whim and locking the clutch. the Clutch is something pulled out of a john deer combine that is used to engage the rotor, which is designed to take one hell of a snap as well as an insane amount of hp/torque, so i knew it would do the job nicely and is heavy enough not to be a problem not to mention it's designed to attach basically directly to the engine anyways. Unfortunately the project was backburnered due to the family circumstances, but i still have the vehicle and most of the parts. If everything went together relatively well enough that it looked like a professional paint job would do the trick for making it look relatively "stock" minus the obvious shortened cab and lengthened hood, we'd leave it that way, if however a lot of modification had to be made and we started running into constraints in terms of mangling the body up and making it clearly obviously not remotely concealable, we would drop the rear differential on it, and put a 1 ton dual or even a tandem axle under the back end, start welding random scrap metal to it in a relatively appealing way and keep it roughed up paint wise so that we could drive it around as a Mad Max vehicle.

This is been done in 1985 already in the Dakar rally with a semi truck dual.engines and both engines had 3 turbos and won the Dakar rally but still an amazing episode on power nation

You've doubled the parasitic loss by connecting two engines. I'm surprised the power only dropped that much. Each engine is pushing it's own loss plus the loss of the other engine. Great work!

It's the same principle as all the other projects. Yes I know they did before putting them together. So what's next with the twins? Nitrous? Blower? Top fule hats X's 2? Hmm 🤔

17-10-22 The Frequency Of Vibration Well done to all of the engineers who put their time, effort and knowledge into this video on performance-matching ICE motors. It was viewed with interest, as I was expecting the outcome to have been with lightning and people ducking for cover as the coupling failed. I have seen what happens when a lathe chuck key falls on a spinning chuck. At the speed of a jet, the chuck key shot across the workshop with a great lot of kinetic energy, missing the machinist by an inch. The incident left the lathe operator shaking like jelly, with a dazed look on his red face but luckily he had no blood loss on that day. A prior warning of the potential danger was ignored. Remember - Prevention is better than cure. Accidents happen most often due to negligence. I would like to see another test by the engineers in PowerNation. That would be an ICE engine against an EV motor. I designed the concept for the PRIUS Hybrid EV and then the TESLA all-electric variant, but before my work was completed it vanished from my home, so I boxed myself in my home and stopped designing things, while I lived in fear for my life because much of my work was of a technical nature and I did not know who had it, but my work on vehicle technologies has resulted in many wonderful things coming of age. Although I am not known for my achievements, it is nice to see experiments with motors performed by people who care sufficient to do it and make the results of their work available for like-minded people to see and enjoy such tests, which I certainly did as I watched this video. I believe the addition of a safety screen, for use when testing power trains with direct coupling, would be worth considering, as metal travelling at high velocity can ricochet off walls, floors and ceilings in a split-second. From my observation, the addition of a flexible coupling, to relieve torsional stresses between the crankshafts and longitudinal misalignment, would be worthwhile. Also worth considering, is the tuning of the exhaust pipes, starting by making their lengths evenly matched. A temperature reading of the coupling could reveal where energy is lost in miss-aligned shafts. Vibration sensors could also help to determine where power is being lost. The frequency of vibration can be used to detect faulty bearings, as well as earth tremors, and the forces generated by them are great, although unseen until it is too late.

There's no replacement for displacement. Would like to have seen a run with 45deg of phase on them to more distribute the ignition of the cylinders. That might introduce more stress on your coupler, but instead of doubling the impulse on each cylinder firing it would distribute the impulses more evenly across the rotation of the engine. A lot of theory in what I just said, but curious on how it would translate to an actual dyno run.

Great video guy's on a fascinating topic. I can only imagine this setup in a powerboat cruising offshore racer style. Those are nice power numbers and would even be awesome in a monster truck chassis with front end rear mounted engines. You couldn't run them coupled together but they are so well matched that they would be great in a monster truck chassis.

So by synchronizing the firing order what they did was basically make a V8 with double the displacement. I wouldve gone for #1 cylinder (of the second engine) firing inbetween #1 and #2 of the first engine. So you effectively make a V16 with double the power strokes per revolution. Wouldve been interesting to see both concepts head to head.

My cousin kenneth did this with a boat in 1992... but it was 2 350 chevy's and he retro'd a torque converter between... the boat wasnt any faster, But it won the LOOK at that show!!!..

A thermal imager would be a fine instrument for your shop. Your joint between the two would not fail without getting warm or hot; you could monitor with one as you ran it somewhat under load for instant results. Also, I think the percentage of loss must be relative to a vibration that must occur between the two; believing it is near impossible for a limited budget to bring the two engines to perfect alignment...assuming your budget was limited...

This is cool but you should check tractor pulling, they are coupling up to 8 or more V8 big blocks, two or more large V12's, V10's, airplane radial engines...all on a single diff to power the big rear wheels. That is next level crazy.

Tbh I'll just say this: You want coupled engine madness, Go take a look at one of CarsandCameras' builds that they did awhile back. Of which was a triple engine minibike. It's initial config was also set up as a three seater minibike too before they turned it into effectively a long drag minibike with three engines. They've also done a 4 engine gokart that had an engine per wheel. Which... as you can guess... was also madness. The only good thing about such small engines is that... They don't make allot of power usually out of the box, but they can definitely handle a decent~ish amount of power out of the box if you do some shenanigans to make it work out.
