With rumours of a Metal Gear Solid Remake, I thought it would be time to look back on the one time Metal Gear Solid was remade and explain why it fails at recapturing the original game.

The voice acting in the original version did a lot of the leg work to make the scenes feel poignant and meaningful, whether it's Meryl's speech or the scene with Snake and Otacon. The original game didn't have lip sync due to technical limitations, but that in turn worked as the voice actors could more properly emote without having to rely on syncing the dialogue to the lip flaps. The voice acting of the original game felt pretty grounded, even for a PS1 game, and it helped make the characters memorable and made the players take what was happening seriously, but the remake has campy characters in a ridiculous situation, so there's no room for the player to take anything seriously. The fact that they changed lines to be "artistic" and "deep" when the original had characters talk like real people, for the most part.

Listening to the VA work in the cutscenes it looks like the voice actors were channelling their “updated” voices from MGS2 seeing as that was the most recent game around this time. Both Ocelot and Snake sound more or less like they did in that game which I wouldn’t necessarily say is a bad thing

Except Mei Ling still had her Chinese accent in MGS2. For whatever reason it still bugs me that both Mei Ling and Naomi lost their accents and Nastasha’s accent kept switching from “barely there” to “nonexistent.” Aside from Snake and Ocelot, as you said, it generally came off like everyone was asleep in the recording booth.

The narrative that Twin Snakes is a "bad" remake is one of the most insane things I've ever heard. It's legit like saying Resident Evil 1 on the PS1 is better than the OG remake. This is a case of extreme nitpicking combined with extreme nostalgia.

I love how they say it is too over the top with snake jumping on a missile but vampires running on water, man spitting bees out of his mouth like bullets, bullets dodging a woman with a railgun, dislocating limbs and climbing trees, an old man sniper with the speed of a cheetah, lightning power villains, oh that gets a pass

I’ve read other people comment that TTS is the version of Shadow Moses that Otacon recounts to make Snake seem even more badass. It’s not a perfect way to look at it, but it re-contextualized the experience into something I find much more tolerable than before. Maybe others can, too.

After played both the original Game and the remake, TWIN SNAKES it's not a bad remake it's like other adaptation of the story we know and love changing it's tone completly giving a new look to MGS1 otherwise it would been MGS1 but with better graphics and.... THAT's it Gameplaywise the game works even better than the original and yes i know, You can cheese the ocelot and Raven BOSS fights pretty easy but the same thing can apply with bosses from MGS2 and MGS3 (lets take the fear for an example, the purpose of the BOSS fight its using the 1st person view as well using some of your gadgets to locate the fear and attack however by using the fake death pill and a stun grenade You can take out the BOSS in SECONDS) the guards in the remake are the same from mgs2 SO their vission it's better and as for the scenario itself it has more noisy floors to catch their attentions forcing You to watch where are You going or move the stick of the controller slowly so yeah TWIN SNAKES it's not a bad remake

When this came out when I was a teen was more fixated on how good the game looked, but as I got older I realised just how terrible it is. The cutscenes are literally trolling you and the gameplay carry over from mgs2 doesn’t have the infrastructure to sustain the additions. I also HATED ninja’s voice change. The original voice had so much emotion to it, all that is lost in TS.

6 gen MGS games looked terrible, once the series went into 7th gen and became HD that's when things started looking good. The graphics for Guns Of The Patriots, Rising, and Phantom Pain still hold up today. You're right about the cutscenes trolling. Snake jumping off a missile, Solidus dodging bullets and jumping many meters into the air, Raiden running and fighting naked, Big Boss dodging lightning, Ocelot making cat noises, and the constant crotch grabs. The cutscenes were stupid.

@@GeneFOX70 Rather late reply but still wanted to tackle your first point: MGS2 and MGS3 did not look terrible back when they were released (2001 & 2004) considering the platform they were released on (PS2), and they still don't look that bad on modern displays if you play the HD Collection on PS3 or Xbox consoles. Do they look old? Yeah sure. Bad? No, there is certain charm in the way that the older games look. Sure both games don't exactly hold up in terms or textures and lighting etc, compared to modern games. But what does hold up is the artstyle and overall look of both games. Both games have their own unique look that no game today quite has. The simpler texturing also helps with image clarity. You can always clearly tell what you're looking at even on a bigger 4K screen. MGS4 and Rising both have good graphics with more complex detail. But those more intricate details aren't that visible on high-res displays because of the low resolutions that both games have on the console versions. PC version of Rising does of course have more clarity. Color-wise Rising is also very gray and brown, which was very typical on the 7th gen consoles. MGS2 & 3 have more varied color palettes. Performance wise both MGS2 & 3 also run at smooth 60fps on the HD collection, especially now on Xbox One/X or Series X/S. MGS4 on the other hand often struggles to keep itself locked to it's 30fps framerate target. Rising of course was always performing smoothly even on PS3 and 360. Phantom Pain looked very good when it was released, and indeed still does hold up today even on console.

I've been a Fan of the Franchise since the MGS1 for the original Playstation. Apparently there was gonna be a FOX Engine Remake of MGS1, before Konami pulled the plug. 🙁 And I want this Remake to happen. I wasn't entirely satisfied with The Twin Snakes Version, it wasn't good enough. I like it, but there's something wrong with it: The visual looks dark compared to the Original and MGS2 that I can barely see. Some of the glitches kill the game: The camera near the stairs in the tank hangar always spot you no matter what you do, except if you use Chaff and if you get spotted even once you always get Alert 3 times, even if you Reset the game or die and exit. And some of the cutscenes are ruined: the Original cutscene with the tower bridge was dramatic. After the bridge gets destroyed the Hind appears and Snake runs toward the handrail where you're supposed to use the Rope, but in Twin Snakes after the bridged is destroyed a metal debris flies towards Snake, Snake chucks a Grenade at it, WALK TOWARDS the handrail where you're supposed to use the Rope, the Hind appears and there's NO MORE DRAMATIC RUNNING! And in the cutscene where Gray Fox dies, why does Snake scream his name before he gets crush? Apparently another reason for the rerecording in Twin Snakes was due to Jeremy Blaustein's fault for changing Psycho Mantis's last words before he died. Kojima intended it to be "...Strange... Such a nostalgic feeling..." because of the nostalgia he had of being born, but when he found out that his work had been changed, he decided to cut ties with Jeremy for a more one-to-one literal translation. I just want the Metal Gear Titles for Modern Consoles based on the Legacy Collection. 28:20- Also it's impossible to get ALL the voice actors back to reprise their roles. Some of them had passed away 🙁: Takeshi Aono - Roy Campbell's Japanese voice, Hiromi Tsuru - Naomi Hunter, Koji Totani - Revolver Ocelot (For some reason due to his passing before MGS4's Making, Cam Clark had to be replaced with Kris Zimmerman. I don't get it. 🤷‍♂️), Kazuyuki Sogabe - Psycho Mantis, Kaneto Shiozawa - Gray Fox and finally Kenneth Baker's voice actors Allen Lurie and Yuzuru Fujimoto.

5:12 The Psycho Mantis fight does NOT play like in the orignal at all. You are now allowed to go into FPV, and Mantis does not "hijack" it instantly, which means you can simply go prone, aim in FPV and hit him, while you're literally immune to most of his attacks. It's only when his HP falls below a certain threshold that he instantly hijacks your FPV so you can't do that anymore. Which means they ruined the fight by making it easier ON PURPOSE.

I found this very nitpicky, respectfully. While I see your points, it may help if you view twin snakes as a faithful reimagining, rather than a remake. Nitpicky? He brings up damning reasons on why this game sucks so hard. Soundtrack, voice acting, gameplay, and Obtuse OT cutscenes are pretty serious flaws. There’s absolutely no nuance here; it has the subtlety of a shogun blast to the face. It’s as if the developers knew they couldn’t top it so they decided to subvert the player by making the most trolling experience possible.

@@Outereme123 I guess you can see it that way, but here’s my reasoning. Ironically enough mgs 2 was my first foray into the series, and as such, I absolutely loved the TS version. I didn’t play the original MGS until maybe after mgs 3. I credit TS for doing its job and carrying me along storywise. I know my experience is unique, but consider the fact that maybe original players weren’t the target audience. Fwiw I thought it was amazing. Case and point, the nuclear war room section, you could do either the old route or new route, I like quality of life options, but I also like replayablity and taking different routes.

bro you played twin snakes? it's just bad, I played the original and the remake back to back, I didn't even grow up with either of them; twin snakes' gameplay is mindless boring and unfun, i'd rather be playing any of the other main entries, even portable ops is a more enjoyable experience than twin snakes, also the voice acting is just preference, some people prefer snakes' graspy cartoony voice that David hayter started doing after mgs3 (which he only started doing cause he wanted to make big boss sound more like someone from the 1960s and different), for solid snake, i prefer the original voice, when david just did his own voice but a bit rougher.

Word dump: My approach to remaking MGS1 (outside of the 2013 interviews) would still be to reuse the old PS1 assets, clean them/some up a bit but modernize the mechanics, the animations and evironments that would still utilize that aesthetic. (Keep the raw pixel look of the PS1, not that filtered look. Potentially give Snake his bandanna back, recolor the hair and or suit. Maybe alter or change some of the low poly models into nicer lowpoly models.) Keep iconic places the same or similar especially if they appear in 4 but outside of story and music nothing else is sacred. Reusing the old look but less glitchy would also excuse some abstract aspecta of design, maintain continuity and allow certain iconic visuals like say floating rotating items to still exist should someone desire that or toggle it on. It would leave more time and resources for other aspects. On Boss fights and some set peices: The Wolf fight particularly the first one is awful and the second one has merely aged poorly especially in the face of later sniper fights. I'd have you backtrack for the sniper rifle but when you come back no one is there skipping the worst phase which the TTS should have done as opposed to putting a tranq rifle in an office cubicle barely 100 meters away (making the dragging away of Meryl ridiculous). In regards to Meryl and to fix some plot armor, plot holes and realism issues she might be sniped and tranqed, should you fail to escape that room you'd be tranqed and kidnapped abd need to back track for the sniper rifle later. When you go to the same door you did in the original you still get ambushed and taken prisoner. The other (now sole) Wolf fight/phase later outdoors she'd be shooting to kill but have a larger arena, might even make an option that is part of the fight to use one of the storage sheds there as a secondary place to aquire a sniper rifle to avoid backtracking for it if you know where to look and still didn't pick it up during or after the first Wolf encounter. Players would still want to have picked up thermals or NVGs. The Raven fight would have more verticality but might see his weapon choice tuned down. It might not work with modern mechanics or come off too goofy. Having it be fight where you risk instant death or actual near death might work. The Tank fight could possibly be snuck past or a player could even just damage it a bit or sabotaged and skipped entirely before hand. If Raven isn't cut or removed from the tank fight and just replaced with the soldiers rather than being accompanied with them there are some options. Either you don't fight him because you skipped it via sabotage, you set the tank to blow and kill him or regardless you could still utilize stun grenades as a nonlethal approach via the opening hatch and there would be no plot contrivance around a keycard. Multiple outcomes effecting if he appears later or not or at all (I mean outside of actually totally removing him from the first fight or removing him and his second fight if he is not cut entirely). Mantis would possibly be given more room or during the fight make the room appear to be bigger or something via "psychic" bullshit if the fight needs a better arena. I can't imagine the fight being improved much, mostly because his TV, controller and memory card gimmicks are fucked. Ocelot would get back his run speed he lost in TTS and utilize the same tricks you can like shooting pipes, diving and moving and shooting. The big difference is most of the fight would look like the both of you strafing back and forth between the pillars meaning staying still and shooting is almost impossible. Should the player push he repositions or revolces to the others maintaining the space and the strafing meta. Have the fight "end" when his health bar is at 5 or 10 percent and or also have it timed to end when Bakers health dips half way down or 8 minutes pass. If the invisible timers go off Ocelot wont say "You're pretty good," if the timer is beaten by reaching 10 to 5 percent (thus leading to the fight to end timer be damned) he delivers the expexted "You're pretty good." The Meryl soldier fight could be done before or after the Ocelot fight, the room probably needs a redesign and to possibly allow for something other than a straight up gunfight. It could be a larger space the move in and clear like the Ocelot unit fights in 3. You could either sneak out and past or maybe if not forced just knock them out or kill them. It could either be once an alert is triggered it stays an alert or an eb and flow of permant caution to alert and back based on mistakes or performance. If it's not like that it could be like the Frogs in act 5 and still a straight up shoot out but with a more feasible space to shoot in. The elevator fights I'm unsure. Cut them or potentially allow a way around them. CQC aside they'd be inelegant and or uninteresting. The stairs sequence should allow for someone way to avoid or delay detection or maybe mimic elements of the tunnel escape in Snake Eater. The Hind should be fine. Depending on continuity everything should be the same but having the player sneak past or damage it until he flies off might not be too bad. If not for the wreck and parachute in 4 some things could be done. Should or could probably be untouched anyway. Liquid, Gray Fox and Rex I can't imagine modern polish aside being much different. Tunnel car escape. Possibly getting to the option or choice to drive as was once planned or workarounds to killing the soldiers directly or indirectly. Outside of line of sight basic stealth would involve more light and shadow based mechanics while the outdoors would rely on that and visbility, distance and stance. Make the snow storm varying levels of intense, at worst like an MGSV sand storm. No tranquilizers but more non lethal work arounds as an option for some of few forced fights with foot soldiers (if they haven't been cut or redesigned already) with the purely lethal methods reserved for Bosses (possible exception being Raven if he isn't cut or the tank fight outcomes/optiond are accounted for). Kojima wanted an open world remake but I'd say possible mistranslation aside what he meant just having them without load zones and inter connected environments with more routes. Basically real time box truck travel would be a thing like in GZ and TPP and no load zones. The two or three changes Kojima said he'd make to the plot in a remake that could be considered continuity aside or with later remakes assured involved letting Ocelot keep his arm, having Liquid survive or disappear after the chase (So not dying of Fox Die or at least yet I guess) and rewording or removing the clone thing or clone wording. (Not conversations of genetics or origins)

In a way I'm glad Twin Snakes exists. This goes to show just how important Kojima and his style of direction was to the original game. This is HIS story and him advising the devs to tell that story in a way that's so antithetical to the point and the themes the original version was trying to deliver just makes everything feel so out of whack and lost. It feels like MGS doesn't know what kind of game it is anymore or what kind of story it's telling. It's a look at just how much worse the game could have been without Kojima at the helm.

1. I don't know about changing level design, adding obstacles or changing the map at all, it's what players remembered and if that was changed it would probably be the other way around "levels changed = bad". You can cheese the game much more now, but even without that it was kinda easy, heck I remember running around and kicking the guards in the MGS1 on my first playthrough without getting detected. 2. VA's are more in line with what rest of series have, as most of those characters are in fact American the accent is in place. I like them a bit more especially as the mixing is better. 3. Cutscenes some are better (like ocelot gun battle one) some are tad worse, the game was over the top from the beginning (like mechs with railguns that can carry ICM's). 4. Ye they could implemented additional dialogs when you have not killed anyone in a run. But tranq gun is a fine addition. 5. Music is tuned down that's for sure, they could just use the OG one, but it might have it niche, I didn't liked how it was just blasting over everything else in some levels. 6. VR missions were another game to purchase from what I remember, but the time was short as you said. 7. Wasn't MG/2 with the HD collection for ps3? And ye changing too much is always a hustle of Remakes, but that was more of a port than on newer engine than anything else.

The big one is "this is how kojima wanted the original to always be" or "this was his true intention for the original game" or whatever, and then you spend several minutes to an hour trying to find where Kojima said that only to find that he never did. There isn't one video, interview, article, quote, etc where Kojima ever said that. It is literally just a lie made up by this game's hardcore fans to deflect criticism whenever it's brought up. The second one is the the lie that "there's over the top stuff in all the other games so what happens in twin snakes fits" or whatever. But then you see that there isn't a single moment in any other game where snake, or big boss, or pre cyborg ninja Raiden, liquid, Ocelot, Meryl or anyone who for all intents and purposes are just a normal human do these things. Every "similar" over the top example these people cite always involve a character that has some obvious cybernetic enhancement like Solidus or are someone who's explanation for their abilities is perpetually left unknown to create an unnerving mystery around them. And I know someone is going to go "but what about Eva's motorcycle flip on Ocelot in snake eater" to which I reply, a SINGLE LONE example is an outlier not the norm. I don't hate the twin snakes, I actually like it and consider it one of my favorite gamecube games at the very least and regret never buying it at any retro game store or convention back when it could be found for 40 bucks unlike now were a goes for a 100 at minimum, but I'm starting to get frustrated with its hardcore fans. It really confuses me because fans of the twin snakes didn't used to be this insanely illogical. I don't understand what happened.

You have every right to enjoy this game or any game for that matter, but this game is just objectively worse than the original in so many ways. In particular, the music. Good sound design for me can make or break a game and the music in TS is so boring and uninspired compared to the original MGS. The one thing that bothers me the most are those damn cut scenes. they are just so......so fucking stupid! That part where Snake leaps off a missle and Shoots the Hind D while still in mid air is by far the most laughably dumb cut scene I have ever seen in a game that take itself so seriously.

If we are talking today of course it’s not that great. But at the time when GameCube was competing as current Gen hardware( and had more graphical power than the ps2 might I add) it was pretty good. The main complaint that I have today as well as when I was 11 when this came out was the music was changed other than that. It was a great remake.

It blows my mind that people actually defend this trash remake. This reviewer had valid points. The OG is my favorite too, and while I played through TS all I could do is roll my eyes and shake my head. The visuals are the only improvement and the mechanics of MGS2 did break the game because the mapping was not outfitted for them. The Boss battles were so lame too. I literally stood in front of Raven headshotting him in first person while eating bullets like I’m terminator. I went through one ration to win that fight. The Hind D fight I literally stood in one place and blasted him the whole time. The OG had way better atmosphere, dialogue delivery, music, Boss battles, and the cutscenes were way more believable in comparison, plus Snake didn’t constantly punk Otocon every cutscene. They take a moment like Sniper wolfs death and ruin it. All of it screams bad. All I can say is that our tastes differs. I know MGS2 and 3 had its dramatic moments but I think the first game is my favorite because for the reasons above and also because it didn’t have so much anime styled cutscenes like the games that came after.

If there is a remake/remaster I'd say instead of bringing the original cast back again, they should try to enhance the original lines with AI if possible. The delivery is perfect and just can't be replicated. It wouldn't feel right. Besides, the cast is much older now, and might sound different. Models and animations could be smoothed over, but retain the original look as well as possible. Look at the Quake 1 remaster, and how well the updated models retain the original's look that you barely even notice when playing it. Maybe it would be controversial, but swapping the handmade animations with motion capture could possibly work. The music and sound effects in the game are so good that to me, they must be very faithful to the original. Keep it the same, but update the quality of the instrument samples. It has to feel as cold and reverberated as the original. On that topic, the color palette of the original must be retained. It's supposed to be cold and isolated, and the blue/green tint combined with the dark void in the sky deliver that perfectly.

haha i love this video. this game has long been a meme in the metal gear community with some failing to accept the reality that its worse than the original in every single way. people are either blinded by nostalgia or havent bothered to play the game again with a critical mindset to see its flaws. honestly the same problem also applies to the phantom pain and to a lesser extend metal gear solid 4

I was a kid when I first played metal gear solid on ps1 and it was the first time I felt invested in a game's storyline. I bought the remake when it first came out on gamecube and I was so angry with how bad it was that I threw it in the garbage after I completed it. The music and voice acting was terrible. Thank god I had the pc version of the original so I could always enjoy the original with better resolution. I hate how the took out naomi and mei lings accents it's just so stupid. I don't think they cared much about the american dub cause then they got rid of David Hayter later on for no good reason. I do love how on mgs4 they didn't use the remakes lines when you have flashbacks to Shadow Moses, they used the original dialog. This game is a insult to the original. I will never understand how anyone can choose to play this watered down version.

Even if Kojima did said that, it doesn't erase any criticisms here. The gameplay is still poorly designed, the voice acting is worse than the original game, the cutscenes often have a conflicting tone and the music doesn't fit the atmosphere. Also yes, Metal Gear has always been goofy and silly in many aspects, but there's different types of goofy. Supernatural elements or 4th wall breaks are a different kind of goofy than characters doing Matrix backflips off missiles. Both are very different. The latter doesn't fit Metal Gear Solid.

I actually think it is improved in a lot of ways, sounding much closer to MGS3 and it's future installments, although this is just my opinion and I could be biased. I have no idea what they were thinking with the music and OST. It's completely different and although not bad, it is not in the same style. As with the slomo cutscenes, I believe Kojima (or whoever directed the game) might have been a little racist lol as the game was marketed toward western audiences and White Men like The Matrix :P It does not fit the original style as much, nor 2, but MGS3 did have a lot of scenes in it as well as a campy 60's vibe. I think Kojima took a lot of inspiration from Twin Snakes and used it in directing MGS3. MGS1 holds a wonderful place in my heart, it was one of the first PS1 games I played as a kid and I grew up on the series. I even played the older 1 & 2 via emulation and the god-awful NES USA games :/ This was a great review that brought a lot of memories back

As much as I love Kojima, I must admit that he’s a little bias. I think years after MGS4 ended, it was revealed that most of the soundtracks were composed by Norihiko Hibino. Not surprised, Twin Snakes is panned by both fans and critics, and sold terrible (the worst selling game in the series). Even Metal Gear Survive and Snake's Revenge sold more and are considered better than Twin Snakes. What is surprising is how Twin Snakes as we know it was all done from Kojima decisions and the fanbase hate it, when they love all of his work or other Metal Gear games. Over the top scenes like Solidus dodging bullets and jumping high in the air, Raiden dodging railguns or jumping off missiles, or Snake running away from a nuclear explosion in under 20 seconds. There were 4 Metal Gear games on Nintendo consoles before Twin Snakes, the NES is the reason the Metal Gear series gained popularity. Also Snake was included into Smash because Kojima asked Sakurai for him to be a playable character.
