In this video, I will be rebuilding an Dana 30 Narrow Track Front Axle. This is Part 3 that primarily covers Setup of the Ring and Pinion of the new Motive Gear 3.73 Ring Gear Set.
This series will be available in a unique KZfaq Playlist and will include the following upgrades:
- Weld the Axle tubes to the Differential Housing (strength)
- Spartan Helical LSD Differential upgrade amzn.to/3RotZPW
- Motive Gear Ring and Pinion re-Gear from 3.54 to to 3.73 amzn.to/3Eb1aUc
- Motive Gear Master Rebuild Kit amzn.to/3SSlOwb
- Moog Upper Ball Joints amzn.to/3Eg5v8J
- Moog Lower Ball Joints amzn.to/3SFLyMq
- New Front U-Joints
- Media Blast Housing, Prime and Paint with VHT Primer and Paint
- Disc Brake refresh
- New Tie Rod and Drag Link
I have assembled a complete list of parts and many of the tools that I used during this rebuild in an Amazon Affiliate Store page which can be found at the following link: www.amazon.com/shop/influence...
Here is a link to a copy of my Excel Spreadsheet. You will need to list your available shims and repopulate the "1" in the matrix. It will auto calculate the measurements. bit.ly/Dana30ShimCombinations...
All of this is being done to prepare this axle to be reinstalled in my 1979 Jeep CJ7 which is slated to for an LS LM7 5.3L Engine swap.
Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7 V8 Golden Eagle.

Stumbled on this channel before Christmas and I couldn't believe you were rebuilding my Jeep. Same color and all. I've binged all of the vid's to this point and am really looking forward to all of the rest. I'm older (79) so I'm living vicariously through you. Thanks for being so detailed on these. If I can keep the arthritis at bay I may try some of this. Mine has all the same equipment as yours with the exception of mine being a 6 cyl. I've done the ignition, fuel pump, alternator, larger aluminum radiator all new gears in the tranny, fresh stock transfer case, posi and lockers up front, winch lights, both running lights and trail lights with a light bar lights on the square tube front bumper and lights at each of the lower windshield corners. It's got a bikini top and half doors and, of course, a Harbor Freight 1200# winch. A couple of years ago I decided to replace the carb and go from a stock Carter 2 bbl. to a Weber 38/38. Sounds like a good idea until you factor in a Chinese Weber. Didn't know it at the time, same box and documentation but there were subtle differences in the physical appearance that most wouldn't notice unless you really looked. It took me literally months to get it to run somewhat right. Never did get it to idle right. Finally decided to really research and found that it was a Chinese knock-off. Got a real one and what a difference. I don't recommend that amount of frustration to anyone. The differences were that instead of Weber being cast into the body in several places, there was just a Weber sticker on it. everything else looked the same, even the linkage. Anyway, keep up the good work. I and everyone else really enjoy learning along with you.

It is great to keep these ole machines running and most of the work is rather easy. Sounds like you have done quite a bit on yours as well. At one point I put a Holley on the original 304 and it ran great for a year. Then after sitting through a winter, it never ran the same again. Traded it out for a Edlebrock and that thing ran great no matter how long it sat. Happy that you found my build and grateful that you are interested in following along. Many thanks for your message.... Mike

@@UCanDoIt2Mike Mike, thanks for the reply. Actually, that's what prompted me to research and go for the new Weber. I went to start mine after a few months of sitting and the floats stuck, it hydrauliced the motor and, because I have an electric fuel pump, fuel went down into the canister and everywhere else. Also, just a word, I've always heard that Wix filters are a good filter. After I drained the oil to get the gas out I put in a new Wix, new oil and started it up to dial in the new carb. The oil filter blew off and covered the driveway with oil (had to buy a new pressure washer) :). The threads on the Wix were gone, stripped, and not my fault, hand tight. Just be careful if you're using these. You'll be hearing more from me. Keep up the good work. Russ

Great video series! I rebuild my AX15 last week based on your videos. I had these videos up and playing in my shop while I was doing it. Stopping and rewinding making sure I didn't jack anything up. Great work and I cant wait for the rest of this project!

Man o man, you are one detail oriented mechanic! I have my 30 out of 89 YJ tore down and am very apprehensive of putting it back together. I know the process but don’t know if I have the patience like you to do it this correctly. Can I bring mine to ya?!😄. Anyway, I will definitely be referencing this and the other vids a few times before I get started. Subbed, can’t believe I just now found you.

It does take some patience as you have to assemble and disassemble a few times. Just have a goal to get it correct and take your time to enjoy the process. Cheers and have fun with yours!!!! Mike

Well I started the process! I have watched this video 4 times now. I got my backlash in spec on the 2nd run. I’ve made four attempts on getting a recognizable pattern but don’t recognize what I’m seeing compared to what you got and many other videos. I have a guy that knows a guy to run pictures of my patterns by, but can’t get a hold of him. Decided to leave axle in the Jeep but am regretting that decision now. My excuse was I didn’t want to build a stand to put it on. (Didn’t have any extra jacks) I was wondering how I would change the pattern without changing the backlash but after watching once more I see that moving around the carrier shims is what will do that. I started with very little preload on the carrier to make it easier to take in and out but thought maybe adding a bit of preload would help the pattern. It just makes taking the carrier harder to put in and take out. Will get back at it tomorrow. I’d love to be able to DM you some pattern pics to you if you wouldn’t mind to see what you think.

I RTV the gasket to the cover only so when it is time for a gear oil change the cover comes right off. Never had a leak doing this and have reused the same gasket three times.

Great video(s), Mike! I'm literally rebuilding my Dana 30 right now. I'm also using the Spartan LSD. Excited about that. I love the spreadsheet you put together. I'm doing the same thing. Great idea!

Awesome! Glad that the spreadsheet idea made sense to you. You are the first one to reference it. It was easy to put together while I watched TV and very valuable being able to quickly identify available options and allowed me to mark and keep track of what I was doing. I was not just trying to get through mine, I was trying to understand all of the changes and effects. I like to learn this stuff! Have fun with your build. I'm just finishing up my frame restore and then will be able to start putting this stuff back together. Cheers!

@@UCanDoIt2Mike I love the learning too! I’ve done a good bit of work on the myriad of classic cars I’ve owned through my life. But, I always shied away from anything in differentials because it needed to be left to “the experts.” Your videos (coupled with outrageous cost!) inspired me to do it myself. So, this is a first for me. I already did my AMC 20 which I’ve been running for about 5 months now. Runs quiet and have had no issues so far,thankfully 😁. My Jeep is a 1985 Wide Track. Like, you I’ve already restored the body and painted it ( I learned those skills from my late best friend, Claude, whom I named my 1966 C10 after in his honor.) Thank you for doing such great videos. I really enjoy them and get inspired! 👍🏼🍻

Great videos, it helps alot! I'm currently rebuilding a Dana 30 for my CJ7 and was wondering if you measure your final pinion depth at the end. Maybe i can compare my measurements with yours. Greetings from Germany!
@UCanDoIt2Mike
@UCanDoIt2Mike 7 ай бұрын
Great to hear from you. I did not take a final measurement of the pinion depth. I did ended up using 0.020 in Pinion Shims as my final thickness. Let me add that mine ended up very close to the original shim thickness. You might want to just start there and make adjustments as the patterns indicate. Hope this helps! Mike
