Today, Rebekah wanted to clean out the goat stalls in the livestock barn. But our compost system isn't working. We have a compost pile and it is getting bigger and bigger. We need a better way to compost all the Hay, straw, and manure we are getting from the livestock barn.

I was the barn manager for an 18 stall horse barn. My favorite thing to do besides making sure all the horses were safe and healthy was to clean their stalls. Yeap, I loved cleaning the stalls! Get some Home Defense spray for the spiders and spray the rafters, it’ll help keep out the spiders and all of their webs. I used it every 4 weeks and I had the cleanest barn with no spiders or the webs. 💜💜

Yup. Cleaning the stalls in the barn will always be, THAT chore. Lol we have a 100 year plus old manure cart in our barn. It was falling apart, but I spent about $110 in parts, and got it working again. It’s kind of cool to have a hanging manure cart. Wish I could add pictures to the comment to show you. 😊😊😊

compost pile - I'd suggest you start a pile parallel on the other side of the back barn yard fence about 20 to 30 feet into the pasture. If I recall, you have a gate going through the back gate into that pasture, you'll have water and electric close by you can use. Then I would get some Premier One electric fencing to go around the other three sides of the pile, that way you can leave the gate open and allow the chickens to go in and work the pile when you want and when it comes time to add to it, turn, or use it you pull the P1 fencing and use the tractor. Set a sprinkler up on the fence to water it when you need to and electric for the fencing. I would also suggest you add other things to your pile in layers as you go, some dirty, some sticks, trash that will compost, etc., etc. With the rain you get you may not even need to really water much. Oh and the nice thing about any run off will go down the incline away from the barn. Or you could just spread it in the pastures and let nature take care of the composting and not have to deal with a pile at all.

measure the width of the bucket on the tractor, then using pallets are or lumber create 3 or 4 bins . then you can rotate by moving from one bin to another and back.

I don't put hay in my compost pile as it tends to take longer to compost down compared to everything else.. What I do with it, is put about 8 inches on my potato beds and about 4 inches over my asparagus beds. I pile the hay up until fall, that's when I spread it on those beds.

Compost bins.... Use your existing pole building next to the compost pile now and create bins with the poles... Fasten boards between them to create the dividers. For water, get a couple IBC totes and harvest the water off the roof of the compost stalls....

Create a new compost pile outside the barnyard fence on the backside. You can access the pile with your tractor. And I assume you have water in/near the barn. You also need to add "green" material with all the "brown" material to make it more active with the water. It will decompose a lot faster. Veggie/kitchen scraps will also help it become more active. A 3 ft long compost thermometer will help you know if its active or not also. Another thing to help would be to redesign the hay feeder possibly using wire mesh to help hold the hay in for less mess/waste. Or possibly small hole feed bags/nets could be used. I have never had goats but used them for my horses. Saving money/time on less waste and clean out time was my main goal. It takes a couple minutes more at feeding time but 80 - 90 % less waste/clean out time was great. Also pick one day a week for clean out and it goes a lot faster, with less smell. Good luck, hope this helps.

For my chicken coup I have a large tarp on the floor that I put straw and bedding on top of, when it comes to cleaning it out I just pull tarp out onto trailer and dumb in compost pile. I am getting my barn delivered this week for my goats I am getting and am going to try the same with the goats to make for easier clean up

Evan when I had a compost pile from stall cleanings you need to just turn the pile at least once a month, I’d just scoop from one side with the tractor bucket go around to the other side dump it, Repeat until you have turned the whole pile over. This worked well for me even in the winter months. I’m from Troy, Mo our weather is about the same as yours. Good luck

Add water to your compost pile to get it working and turn it frequently to keep it working. The Holler Homestead have it sorted, check out their videos. The spiders thrive on all the flies from the livestock.

If you clean everyday and have a oldtime stack that under a roof it will get hot enough to kill the seeds in the hay. You will also have a very good use of it in your garden. Make shore to check it out now and then. Very easy. I lived in an old farm in very cold climat, the stack was always warm

Just a suggestion, I would build a grid system out of wood or wire meshing 4x4, or 6x6 squares, so the goat don't pull at the hay and waist it , Having the grid in front slows them down and they are just able to get small amounts at a time rather than pulling out more than they can eat, and ending up on the floor!👍👌❤🇨🇦

Yea, more spider webs because more flies with livestock! There are some homemade goat hayfeeders that reduce wasted hay ...I made one that is a cement-mixing tub with a opening cut on one end (top), it's zip-tied to outside of goat panel. There's still waste, just not too bad. I'm gonna try one I saw that uses a short-legged livestock feed tub with goat panels on all sides---the goats have to put their head through the panel to get the hay, and keep their head in there as they're eating, so rarely drop any outside the feed tub except if they've got a mouthful as they're done eating. My goats don't have horns, so I don't know if that would be a hazard for yours I feel very inspired after watching you!

Build a compost bin out of block in a plus sign pattern with 4 bin s Scoop out the top of one of them either N/S with a manure fork then pull out the E/W side of the same bin. Put the top N/S back in the what was the top of the pile on the bottom jostle it up as it goes in. Then put the bottom stuff on the top doing the same thing. And water it about every other week of it hasn't rained out when you fill or stir

I have had goats and chickens for years. When I clean out the goat barn, I throw it in the chicken yard. After they have had it for a week and manured on it, I wet it down, turn it with the loader, and cover it with a black tarp. That helps it get to cooking temp of 160+ degrees and it breaks down faster.

To hasten the break down of all that hay and manure mix get a bag of Milorganite and sprinkle it throughout the pile and wet it completely even if you have to carry water or just wait till it rains it acts as a starter and in pretty short order you will have really good soil. Goats don't need so much bedding if it's too thick it traps the moisture and you wind up with those big wet mats , also goats are incredibly wasteful feeders they pull lots of hay looking for the choicest bits then the rest falls to the ground and once they walk on it they won't eat it. A feed and hay bin where they have to put their head in and not their body is best , if they can get in they will hop right in take a nap and upon waking will first off pee in the feeder. As for housing check how the commercial goat farms in India build the entire operation off the ground with the goats being kept on slatted wooden floors so the dung and urine fall through to ground . Most but not all leave them out on pasture during the day then put them in at night. I love goats but the word CAPRA is the root word for capricious. Make a plan ...Boers, Angoras, or ??

New sub...I like a 4-tine forged cultivator to get more hay with each pull...I have also noticed that there is less of a smell after removing the black stall mats - maybe because the urine sinks into the soil more, but since you have concrete underneath, wouldn't work for you. In winter, I usually just remove noticeably soiled areas - they will quickly cover it over with the hay they waste. The thick underneath matting starts to compost and gives off heat to keep them warmer.....

The hay/manure mix might be better served if you could spread it on your alfalfa field, maybe keep an eye out for an old manure spreader for the tractor, other than that the only way your going to get it to rot into compost would be to wet it and turn it every few days. Maybe build a compost bin out of the useless locus trees you have been cutting down.

Even if its 'old' concrete can a sealer be applied to lock out the urea from breaking down the floor over time? If you have a roof by the current compost pile could you catch the rain for a water source at that site? In my experience one good soaking as you build the pile seems to be enough to get it going. You have your carbon & nitrogen mixed already just need the active microbes from a shovel of soil on top of 12" of barn waste. Then just stack 4 layers & soak as you go. Forget it for ~6 months & good to go. couple dc pumps to move water from a rain barrel kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itKdY6mG17qtmGg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arJidKaGur7GloE.html pretty sure there is a us equivalent product

Ok this might go against every thing but leave the stall over winter this is called deep litter put a bit of lime on the top and top up with fresh straw this does two things 1 keeps the goats warm in winter and 2 compost the hay straw. In the spring take it out it will already be half composted. use pallets two high and like some one said as wide as your bucket on the tractor, you do not need to turn farmyard compost unlike garden compost. You will most probably need at lest two compost bins better to have three this is so you 1st year fill up the first one 2nd year fill up the second one by the time the second one is filled up the first one should be ready to use on your garden.

I'm sorry for not understanding why you can't get your tractor in there ? Why can't you back through the gate and drive a few feet to the door ? Shovel the hay and poo into a wheel barrel, then dump that into the tractor bucket ? A cattle panel in the front of the feeder will slow down the losing of feed. Just an idea, but if you were to dig a large hole into the hillside somewhere next to the barn and dump the straw and manure into it, it would rot and hold moisture faster since it's in the moist ground. You could then use your forks or bucket on the tractor to turn it over and it basically costs you nothing, except time and fuel ? Would that work ? Sorry for such the long comment. Thumbs up you two !

I can get the tractor in the barn yard, but if we build compost bins in the barn yard, I dont think I would be able to turn the tractor enough to work a compost bin and turn it or scoop it. Idea for the location of compost, it looks good where it is, on the edge of woodland area for fungal duff to work it's way into it, maybe bring down a rain barrel and put it up on some blocks. Also, for the goats, try biochar/homemade charcoal on the floor to control smell and absorb some urine. Works great!

The reason the goats are wasting so much hay might be due to the fact that the hay (in this video) looks like a lot of stems and not a lot of leaves. You might consider buying a hay chopper. That should cut down on the waste.

Yup it’s a crappy job but it has to be done. Try to get an old manure spreader and spread it on your fields. You are all doing a great job around your homestead. Me thinks something is moving in the barn before long 🤔🤫🤗
