All the info in this video is still valid in 2024, nothing has changed. The UK motorcycle licence system confuses many including riders.
This video is designed to help you understand what motorcycles you can ride at what age and what tests you will need to pass to get your motorcycle. I also cover what you can ride on a car licence.
I cover all the licences CBT, AM, A1, A2 and full A, How you get them and how old you need to be.

People keep asking me if they have a motorcycle licence as they have dates in the A line on the back of their car licence. If you never took a motorcycle test you will not have a motorcycle licence. What you will see in the column to the right is 79(3) this is a tricycle licence you get with a car licence. Here is a short I did to show my motorcycle licence that has not got the restriction code. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNFga5yQ2J60kWQ.html

Thanks for that. I just want to check that what I'm planning on doing is sensible:- I'm looking at moving from driving a car to a motorcycle, I'm over 24 & have had a full driving licence since 2007. So the plan is to get my CBT by the end of May this year, then ride a 125cc for 2 years minimum (mostly to work - 16/17 mile daily round trip) the idea being that after the first year I can take the A2 theory test & then start training for the A2 mods. So what I'm asking is do you think this is a realistic timeline?
@spicy110
@spicy110 Жыл бұрын
@@acmdv Good to stay on a 125cc for a couple of years 100% But as you are over 24 you would not take the A2 you would be going for the full A. Same tests, same bikes pretty much but you get an unrestriced licence.

Bloody Hell! I watched out of interest and ended up happy I passed my one off test in 1963. Ride around a block for 20 minutes during which a some point the examiner leapt out into the road with a clip board to test my emergency stop lol back to the centre a few questions on the Highway Code and bingo, full licence. Still riding at 78. :-)

Loved the vid spicy! I turn 20 in 2 weeks and I'm looking forward to doing my A2! I wanted to ask, could you possibly do a video on what kinda gear you'd require for the different seasons, what material is ideal for what season, and I can appreciate that this varies from person to person. But would you able to give a general consensus? As an example, what would I ideally need to wear, while I'm on the motorway in the cold, while it's raining? Just an idea for a video. Much love from up North of England lad 🤙

Getting an A1 licence can actually end up being quite cheap. Most of the cost of getting an A2 or A licence is the training and bike hire, but if you already have a 125 from riding on a CBT and you're a good enough rider you only need to pay the cost of the theory, mod 1, and mod 2 tests. The theory is £23 and the mod 1 and 2 come to £90.5/104 (depending on if you do the mod 2 on a weekday or weekend/evening/bank holiday) so it will end up being cheaper than most CBTs.

Hi spicy took my first cbt and had a 125 at 18. I had great fun and absolutely loved it. I had to get rid of the 125 when I got a car due to only being on apprentice wage and couldn't afford it. The point its I recently have retaken my cbt and It have become so much stricter and more serious. 3 people were sent home and not allowed out on the road. Couldn't believe it because in 2016 the cbt was an absolute joke how easy it way. May have just been the training centre I went but still found it interesting. Been watching for years, cheers!

I live in Victoria Australia (ex UK) can’t believe how complicated this is! We have - 18yr + old can do Learners Permit this lasts 18mths and lets you ride a bike similar to A2, you do a ‘Check ride’ I think which is a 2hr road assessment then you do your full test. You can then ride what you like. We have cheap compulsory government third party personal insurance and you don’t have to have any other insurance if you don’t want to (it’s not very expensive though so everyone does).

I have an A license and 600 IL4 is way too much for me and for public roads. The most fun I have had Is on smaller bikes like KTM 390, supermoto 125's etc. The best option would be to just have one test and an auto upgrade and set amount of time in each power category . You could even have to just complete a cbt type day between each power category.

I was taught by my late father a Metropolitan Police Traffic Cop who always emphasised the fun of bikes but also the need to be so much more alert than average car driver God Bless him all those tips and suggestions have kept me alive to still ride on the open road on two wheels…@ 68…

Cant you get the MT-07 de restricted once you're 21 ?
@desantos1234
@desantos1234 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrishart8548 no, you have to take the full A test to do so. With the old A2 law from the mid 2000s up until it was replaced with the current one since 2013, you would be able to do your full test at 17, but have your bike restricted to 33bhp for 2 years then be able to just remove it after that period of time. Now it is separated into 2 different tests for some reason which makes no sense apart from more money for the Government. EU states were also told when the law was put in place that they could choose how they go about upgrading A2 riders to a Full A category license. Some countries, I believe Holland, allows A2 license holders to simply take off their restrictors after 2 years and just pay for logistical fees of having their driving license card updated and sent through post. The whole license thing is a pain, but the only good thing is in the UK we have the blessing of the CBT which the EU didnt like, but we kept, because otherwise we would be like other EU countries that are required to do a full test at 17 just to be able to ride a 125!! Bogus bollucks, all of it. Limited because of our age, the government's control on us is ridiculous and biased, North Korea isnt too different from us

I’m 45 and took my DAS from my CBT 2 years ago. I had 8 days tuition followed but my mod 1 and 2. Hope this helps anyone getting a rough idea what it’s going to cost you It was around £1100 including my 2 tests but your mileage may vary Best of luck and don’t get caught out by 20mph zones on your test route

@@unclebumble8971 hire cost for the bike really adds to the overall cost. Most people need to do the theory and CBT. Although the CBT does add an extra day of training. The MOD1 is fairly cheap.

Hi there, I've been a subscriber and been watching your vids pretty much on a regular basis and wanted to let you know that I absolutely like them and you doing a great job 😊 I'm actually reaching out as I have a few questions and thought probably you might have some answers if not I'm considering approaching some motorcycle instructor for a right answer. Now I was riding the other day and passed a school that had a sign saying when flashing 20mph, and this is legally a 30mph road. What would be legally correct as the 20mph is advisory not mandatory. I was told something different by 2 instructors and now it's confusing. Another incident where I was at a mini 4 point roundabout taking the first left exit and a van has just crossed from exit 2 which is opposite me but the round about is backed up as he's going straight on so he's pulled into the round about and I've pulled out left, no way am I in his way or he is coming towards me, would this be termed as a failure on a test? I hope this actually makes sense, my instructor just put it off and didn't want to explain why it was an issue as I didn't any or even a threat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks buddy 👍

I’m from Jersey Channel Islands, and we’re blessed, you only need to do your CBT once, even on a 50cc, which is why it’s beneficial here to get it done at 16 - which is what I’ve done. At 17 once you pass your theory + hazard perception plus your practical test and hold your 125cc license for 12 months, you can get any bike at 18, granted insurance will be crazy if you jump from a 125cc scooter to a Panigale V4R.

Probably still wouldn't be as limited. These license things are based on cc horsepower and power too weight. I could see people being limited to a 1 litre car but those are not that bad these days. And the electric cars will not fit the rules well. There all fast.

Did my CBT on an automatic (started on a manual) because the instructor thought I was struggling, he was just impatient. As soon as I got on the road with a manual I bought, got my uncle to ride it to an abandoned car park and spent 6 hours going back and forth around it and managed to learn the gears, clutch etc. Definitely felt fucked over!

I'm halfway into the video and I can say that in the EU it's so much simpler, pretty much cut and dry, and in short it's some like this: AM: You need to be 14, and you need to sign up in a driving school and do classes (theoretical and practical ones) A1: You need to be 16, and you do car theory as well, no need to repeat when getting a car license at 18, otherwise same as AM. A2: You need to be 18, you can skip theory if upgrading, if you have a car license you only need to do bike theory, otherwise same as A1. A: You need to be 24, otherwise same as A2, you can get it at 20 if you have had your A2 license for 2 years, just need to sign up for an exam. Additional notes: You can sign up 6 moths before your birthday and start taking classes, but you can't do either theoretical nor practical exam before you reach legal age for the license you aim to get Hope this isn't just a jumbled mess that I made in the middle of the night, and you get what I mean, I just wanted to share with you the fact that our way is more straight forward, and I think better, you really do EVERYTHING backwards from our way (jk).

This is such a informational video. Thank you so much for explaining deeply everything needed in-order to get a bike licence. I am a few months over 17 and I really want to get into bike riding as, for a while now I've been wanting a motorbike. Yes majority of people think it's a bad idea to have a motorbike when you're young and that's understandable. However, all really comes down to your preference I guess. I have understood the video and as you said in the video I will probably just stick with the 17 year old 125cc bike CBT as I will probably want to upgrade to an a2 when I'm 19ish 😁 this video was one of the many I watched that I actually understood so thank you so much for the information. Quick question? Which bike would be most recommended for a 17+ year old 125cc as I'm unsure what I'd go for as I have no knowledge on bike models? I will be researching but I do want to know everyone's opinion 😊.

Also to answer you're question it depends on this factor, do you want too ride for a long time and get you're A2 license? If so gett a Honda CBR 125cc beautiful bikes, availability on parts is huge. Can take a beating like genuinly, Hondas are made too last. However if you're thinking about not riding for long, or haven't got the budget of around 1200 odd then get a Chinese Lexmoto or smth.

@@MotoThiccy that's the thing with 125, due to how easy the CBT is, there's an influx of new riders, so the price of good branded bikes go up, my CBR125 cost me £2000, I can get a 500cc Honda for a little less than that, it's crazy, and yeah im nott one for Chinese bikes either, cheaply made crap if you ask me.
