Should you buy an Ultrawide monitor for gaming? There are a lot pros and cons to gaming in 21:9. Many games have ultrawide support... but many have partial/none or rely on ultrawide mods. There are cost issues as well. So is going ultrawide worth it? What are the alternatives to ultrawide?

*the FUNNIEST monitor comment I ever heard was...* A few years ago there was a discussion forum about the pros and cons of Ultrawides. At one point a guy said (and he was not joking) that he did tasks that worked better on Ultrawides, but he ALSO did tasks that benefited more from height... at which point he said he wished someone would design a monitor that was BOTH wider AND taller.

Although his solution was rather dime he's not wrong about different tasks benefiting from height and width. It's just that monitors currently cater for this if you get a decent monitor arm that allows you to rotate the monitor vertically and then change display setting from landscape to portrait. A lot of programmers and stock brokers will run two 27" monitor with one in portrait for code and the other in landscape and it takes about 20 seconds to change between the two options so it's not hard even if you have just the one monitor..

Glad you touched on this subject. I don't think I'll be getting into ultra wide anytime soon. I love the visual quality of my 4k and may consider an OLED at some point in the future. I do own a 55" LG OLED but it's not as convenient has having a smaller one on a desk. I am itching to try it though, just to see what the quality is like.

Thanks for the video, great observations! I have a 48" C1, and in between ABL and maximum brightness, I much prefer my Aorus Fv43u for productivity and general desktop use, it's a good compromise and much cheaper than quality 38" 21:9's. For general content consumption and gaming, it's hard to beat OLED imo, given that the space is dark enough. In terms of ultrawide- my observation is that my vertical field of view is larger than 21:9 allows, especially on a 34-35" panel, the panel is just too short imo. However, curved panels are nice, especially as the panel gets bigger, regardless of aspect ratio.

I agree, ultrawide monitors have quirks. It honestly sucks because I thought the industry was moving to wider displays especially after seeing super ultrawide monitors, but that never happened. I remember when everything was 4:3 and then 16:9 came around. Lots of games didn't properly support widescreen, and it was the same issue we have today. I didn't even upgrade to a widescreen LCD until the physical number of pixels was the same (1920x1200) as what I used on my CRT (1600x1200).

I currently use a 32X9 monitor, a Samsung CH90. When games scale well its nice. But it is certainly a PITA wondering if the game you want to play is gonna support it and support it appropriately. Frequently games just distort the hell out of peripheral content. FOV adjustments can help but overall its just a chore way too often. Your point that devs will incorporate ultrawide support as an afterthought as the vast majority of their audience is utilizing 16x9 is well taken. There are certainly many Ultrawide users that continue to exclaim they can not go back., and for the longest time I was one of them. But these new OLED 4k monitors (TV's) are a game changer IMO. I am currently saving to move on however my 3070 will compromise my experience at 4k. Still ill just dial down the settings until I upgrade my GPU.

Way back I loved the immersion of a 3x1 24" monitors. Then when a ultra wides came out I switched to 1 29" ultrawide center and 2 24" flankers. Amds eyefininty supports this resolution. Then super ultra wide came out and I've been wating to see a resonable priced one of those and i'd just game on one monitor after demoing those samgsung ones. Unfortunately the pannels are not the best they are samgsung va but i was willing to make the trade off when the price was right. But bow with the oleds being close in price (and with) makes this decision much harder.

Problems with the OLED method however. - Burn in ( Each pixel has a life expectancy you can't get around that. The middle pixels being used more will give burn in or color shift. ) - Desk space - curvature ( Ultrawide monitor Curve helps ALOT with distortions and immersion) - less quips as a native resolution won't have as many problems. ( for example halo infinite can't run fullscreen so for this to work on tv you would need to change desktop monitor resolution everytime as well.) -refresh rate ( tv will go to 120hz but many ultrawides will go above that like 144hz or even 200hz like my monitor )

Hi Daniel, as usual, very informative and to the point. One thing you mention is that UW will provide more of an immersive feeling due to its curvature (which is very true)... but the curvature also serves another purpose. LED screens suffer from one particular drawback... when viewed at an angle, the colors wash out. The bigger the monitor, the more chances you will view the very side of the image, left and right, at an angle, thus the colors will be skewed. Hence the curvature... meaning with the curved monitor, the sides will not be viewed at angle so much, and the color integrity will be preserved. Now for OLED, this does NOT apply, since OLED can be viewed even at extreme angle and not have its colors wash out. So having a curved screen with OLED is not as necessary as it is for normal LEDs.

In my opinion, you missed a lot of reasons for and against and ultrawide in your video. This is unlike other videos where you've given very thorough reasoning about 4K on even a GTX 1060, when you can enable ray-tracing, etc. ## Fixed-aspect 2D games You said games don't or won't support ultrawide, but it's also the case that fixed-aspect-ratio simply don't work in ultrawide modes. Think popular 2D couch games like Samurai Gunn and Towerfall. You'd have to redesign the levels. Same with retro games. At 4:3, they end up taking an even smaller area of your total screen :p. ## 500 extra pixels of height at 4K over ultrawide height In games, you used to be restricted to your monitor's aspect ratio when choosing resolutions in games. Not only can you run at ultrawide resolutions with a 4K screen, but you can also run them windowed or borderless windowed and put chat apps or other apps in the remaining space. I used to run games in widescreen on my 4:3 CRT and would put other windows in the remaining space. ## Resolution differences You said ultrawide means more GPU power requirements, but that's only at the same resolution. In terms of what I've seen ou there, it's 1080p stretch, 1440p stretch, and 1600p stretch (4K width). I actually use a significantly lower amount of GPU power on my 3840x1600 ultrawide (4K width) than a 4K display, but render 2 million less pixels and have the ability to run at higher framerates. ## Technological limitations of 4K displays The larger and more diverse your pixel count, the less-likely it's going to include gaming-specific features. 3840x1600 ultrawides are a common these days and can get 120-160Hz and offer 10-bit color at those refresh rates with HDR. From what I've seen 4K displays max at 120Hz because the technology of DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 can't handle more than that. So while 120Hz vs 120Hz is the same, 160Hz feels even smoother, but that's not gonna be an option on a 4K display even if you run it at an ultrawide resolution. That's the biggest issue I've had looking at 16:9 displays. At a sufficient size and resolution, the actual display, even if run at a lower res, does not support higher framerates like you would've gotten with CRTs. ## Size differences You noted that with 32:9, it's going to be wider than a 16:9 display unless you're buying a 60"+ 16:9 monitor. But it's more than that. For instance, I have a 38" ultrawide. To get an equivalent pixel per inch at 4K, it'd need to be 43". Just like 32:9, I'm running into a situation where the height of the screen is going to result in problems. ## Movies and other content consumption Movies are typically 21:9 or wider, so if you consume a lot of movies, ultrawide is more beneficial because you can watch at the intended aspect ratio without letterboxing. I know not everyone uses their PC for content consumption, but many watch KZfaq. Dunno if you knew this, but Linus Media Group sometimes releases 18:9 videos because that's the lowest mobile device aspect. It's a great in-between from 16:9 and 21:9 so you get black bars regardless, but it's wider than normal. I'm assuming there are other creators doing this as well, but maybe not that many? Heck, my Surface Pro tablet is 3:2 so it's even less screen being used. ## Mobile devices You said consoles need 21:9 for it to be anything more than an afterthought (which I agree), but what about mobile hardware? Sure, the Nintendo Switch is 16:9, but all new iPhones and Android devices are 18:9 or more these days and have been for a while. That means there's definitely developer support, just not so much on the platforms that include games I wanna play. Still, if phones have a different aspect ratio, support is going to be more common than you think, but yes, TVs are very limiting in this regard. ## The curve I think you overlooked the curve because you said you don't like it. That gives me the impression you don't understand why it exists. It's not for immersion, it's for correcting perspective (I read an article about this a while back, but don't have a link on hand). Maybe it doesn't make sense at 16:9, but when I look at large, flat screens (even 16:9), they look convex as if the sides are actually being pulled backward. It actually matters how close you're sitting to a curved screen to how flat or curved it looks. More curved, like 1800R, is going to be for people sitting closer where as 3800R is for people sitting further away. TVs typically don't have curves because they're designed to be watched by multiple people at all angles and are far enough away that the curve is unnecessary. At larger sizes, like 120", cruves start to matter especially at ultrawide resolutions that you'd see in movies. That's why movie theaters have curved screens and that's why it's actually very important to have a curved screen when sitting close up to a very large display (especially your OLED).

Two methods. Check your videocards driver settings for handling scaling/aspect ratios or check your monitors OSD settings for the same. On a AMD GPU, open the Radeon Software>Gear in the upper right>display>Scale Mode. Hit the drop down and select "Preserve aspect ratio".

I have mixed feelings on this. I like ultra wide for PC gaming. If I were soley gaming on PC I would be ultra wide 100% of the time. I have an ultra wide and when I use it I'm in heaven. However, I also play on consoles. Mainly on Switch and those black bars when playing on my monitor were distracting in Metroid Dread for example.

You should throw in an Super ultrawide in that mix. 32:9. Almost 4k
@Trunks0
@Trunks0 2 жыл бұрын
For 32:9 the 1440p variants (5120x1440) ones pretty close to 4k resolution and the 1080p variants are half of 4k's resolution (3840x1080). 32:9 is a different beast. You have the same screen real estate as 2 displays while both taking up less space as two displays and gaining an insane gaming experience. You also tend to have less issues than 21:9 for games, as many older games supported 3, or more, multi-monitor (AMD: Eyefinity and nVidia: Surround Gaming). 32:9 is almost exactly the same as 3 old school 5:4 monitors(3840x1080 is awfully close to 1280x1024 times 3). Allowing you use games triple screen settings (CS:GO is a perfect example)

If you do a custom resolution your 29 ultrawide will fit within the space and resolution of a 32” 1440p 16:9 (same exact size, ppi and resolution). And with modern kit like the ‘fast ips’ Gigabyte M32Q you’ll get refresh rates up to 165Hz and better motion. I find ultrawides very neat but ultimately pretty niche.

I've never used an ultrawide, but here's why, given my main use case is gaming, and we all have limited desk space: 1. Many games that will put HUD elements well off into your peripheral vision on an ultrawide. My friend with an ultrawide has this issue. Minimaps and chats require you to take your attention off the center of the screen. 2. If you want discord, browser, youtube, hwinfo, etc. visible alongside your game, you are much better served by having multiple monitors. Ultrawides take desk space I would rather use for extra monitors. In theory you could split the ultrawide into virtual monitors, but this either needs support in the monitor (extremely rare) or in software (neither nvidia nor AMD have done this in drivers, alternatives like displayfusion get overriden by fullscreen apps which defeats the point). 3. This is more subjective, but I don't buy the simplistic argument that immersion equals resolution plus field of vision, and that you should be pushing for the maximum here. Stuttering and poor framerates are far bigger immersion killers for me than being able to see the edge of my monitor (which my brain is pretty good at tuning out). Pushing up the resolution past the point of diminishing returns makes stutters and poor framerates more likely. Plus the logical endpoint to the "ultrawide equals immersion" idea is VR headsets. Turns out that too much visual immersion gives you motion sickness when it's not matched by movement immersion. So the ideal would be a single ultrawide that you can subdivide at will for whatever tasks you are doing (including "full screen" tasks), that doesn't seem to exist at the moment (if nvidia or AMD do this, they have pretty much secured my upgrade dollars). So I stick to my current multi-monitor setup, where my fullscreen games go on the middle screen.

Instead of OLED's, Micro LED TV's are a better bet. No burn-in and still very small dimming zones. Note Samsung G9 Neo has zones so for the "most" part it does same thing as OLED's if you "trim" the sides by playing normal 1440p. I have the non-neo G9.. and do agree that some games are not designed to work on it. There is another point you missed. That most games, even if they "work" on ultra wide's, they "stretch" the edges, making objects "wider" as well. It is an annoyance for sure. Still as you stated, productivity is better, eg, showing timelines and such.

Here's the way I look at it: I currently use two 24" 1080p60 16:9 monitors side by side, for a total combined resolution of 3840x1080, overall aspect ratio 32:9. Because my desk is assymetrical, I sit in front of the left monitor, and so the right half of the right hand monitor is pretty distant and difficult to read. Going to a single 34" 1440p144 21:9 monitor gives a resolution of 3440x1440. That's a whopping 400 pixels narrower, and 360 pixels taller. A 34" ultrawide is physically taller than a 24" wide, so I will actually gain vertical screen space, which will be nicer for coding. I tend to tile my left monitor in vertical halves, and have KZfaq or something fullscreen on the right monitor. Now I'll just tile the monitor in thirds. And, I'll be able to use my entire screen space for gaming, which my GTX-1080 should be able to handle, and the RX6800 I want should be able to handle with aplomb.

A comment regarding movie All bluray movies are 16:9, even ultra-wide movies are 16:9, the top and bottom black bars are embedded in the frame, so: 1. A 16:9 movie on a 21:9 monitor will have black bars on left and on the right. 2. A 21:9 movie on a 21:9 monitor will have black bars on left, on right, on top and on bottom. To fix this you need an option to zoom to fill the whole display. 3. If you use 1440p WIDE or ULTRA WIDE monitor, you are zooming the frame of a bluray movie, you upscale the picture and upscaling is not a feature of a monitor, it doesn't have any algorythm to see if you watch a movie in a higher resolution than the original resolution of the movie. An 1080p movie will look best/crisper/more detailed on a 1080p display. A 1080p movie on 1080p OLED will look better than on a 4K OLED. There is no perfect upscaling technology for a 1080p movie to look correct on a 4k/1440p display, even LESS on a monitor that do nothing to anything you watch on it. A TV is more suitable for upscaling. 4. For 4k movies, you need a 4k display (doh). That means 3840x2160 and no other BS of resolutions.

I play one (1) game .. Call of Duty multiplayer .. that's it and no desire for anything else. I think the most important aspect is finding the right 21:9 monitor paired with a great game and the right GPU / PC. My thoughts .. I currently have an Acer $650 2560x1440, 165 Hz, G-Sync with a IMO meh VA panel. I can certainly tell the difference between 165 FPS / Hz and a mediocre 120 Hz .. sense of motion. I have a really nice Sony OLED TV, but there's a zero chance of me using it to game on and the thought of it seems absurd. However, what I've been drooling over is a minimum .. 200 Hz+, G-Sync (Ultra), curved (minimum 1800R) with the "dream" of someone using an OLED panel. A while back I thought Dell was going to release an OLED gaming monitor, AFAIK it never went past prototype. I've been looking at the Acer X35, ASUS PG35VQ, LG 34GP950G and similar monitors. All running on a new Alder Lake build with my year old RTX 3090 FTW3 .. *but* I have no desire for 4K .. to be competitive, I'd need to run two RTX 3090s in SLI and for whatever stupid reason SLI is toast. 21:9 I feel will give me a slight competitive edge. I'm getting older now and I need every piece of help possible.

The AOC supports specific ratios as well, to letterbox it. It's a VA panel so it doesn't glow, at least I do not notice it at all. There was a point where I had to RMA my GFX and used a lower spec card, had to letterbox it to play warzone on high frames. Wasn't an issue at all. Cutscenes, almost all games still have cutscenes in 16:9, but this also does not bother me at all, since I am not doing anything and just watching a "vid". It's perfectly centered. My ONLY annoyance, is when I am in work mode (the aoc has a built in KVM, so use work laptop and gaming pc on the same monitor.), and have to screenshare. Since everyone else uses 16:9 I have to temporarily bring my resolution down or share specific applications only (vs whole screen).
