Even though I grew up Roman Catholic (nowadays not a Christian anymore) but what the hey, I love metal no matter what others say. I love any kind of metal such as heavy, thrash, death, black, speed, folk, etc. Regardless of what religious people (or any haters) say, metalheads should be able to enjoy their favorite music genre no matter what.

I am a christian myself and listen to a lot of black metal. I don't take satanic lyrics that seriously. I don't really like the term 'un-black metal' though. It's just like calling amon amarth viking metal. Genres shouldn't only be determined by their lyrics imo. One of my favorite christian black metal albums must be The Forsaken by Antestor. Good video. I'm a Christian and I'm a metal fan (black metal is actually my favorite subgenre). There's no reason why Christianity and metal shouldn't get along. I've always believed any type of music is based on the characteristics of it's sound and not an ideology. I'm a bit surprised metal hasn't progressed to the point where it's no longer generally regarded as anti-Judeo-Christian.

no one anywhere should "get along" with people who actually believe in that stuff. I honestly dont think that most people who call themselves christian truely believe that shit in the bible in literally real, how could they. Its 2017 and we dont need myths to explain things anymore. Its an archaic remanent from the past whose lifespan ran out a long time ago.They actually believe in a virgin birth and that is not even the most whacked non nonsensical impossible thing they believe. Again, its 2017 and if you dont understand that sex is required to make a child then you should just check out, of life that is

Not all Christians belief everything in the Bible in a literal sense and thats not a new thing. Non-literal interpretations of different parts of scripture dates back to the earliest days of Christianity. Whereas Christian fundamentalism in its modern form only dates back to the late 19th century. (though there were problems in Christianity before that of course)

The Bible is filled with very dark, disturbing stories. I am not exactly part of this metal culture stuff, but one song I do immediately recall is "Creeping Death" by Metallica, telling that sick story from the PoV of the spirit that killed the first born of Egypt. There are videos and web sites talking about specific heavy dark stories. Abrahamic books all have dark side stories, contrary to the starry eyed love and light conduct of many followers. This coming from a former Christian.

Nah, God wouldn't mind, I say this as a Christian myself. The Bible says the only unforgivable sin is refusing to be forgiven for sin. Things like listening to metal, being gay, and other stuff that most churches are again are completely and totally okay, really. Heck with it, the Bible even has passages that say something like, "He came from the womb and became man." If you think about it, it's pretty much supporting abortion. My religion largely *doesn't even know its own damn Bible.*
@chidorisnake228 жыл бұрын
+Pale Horse of the Apocalypse Very true, my friend. I am a Christian and a metalhead, and the thing that I don't understand is why Christianity and metal can't intertwine. After all, music was a creation by God, and just because someone uses that creation a little differently, that doesn't automatically make it satanic. As for Christians not knowing the Bible, that's because a lot of Christians refuse to read it for themselves and get their own understanding. They'd rather let some pastor (who's already gathered his own understanding and is far from perfect just like us) tell us what we should think it means, and that's not how it should be. But hey, to hell with reading and thinking, right?

I think that white/unblack/Christian metal is a testament to how Christianity and metal are not opposed. I see the topic of faith theology and tradition as intrinsically tied together within the genre of metal, and metal offers a platform that embraces all view points for the sake of embodying the discussion. Metal heads might learn something from others if they stopped to take a moment to listen to the heart, as you have done with this video.

I'm a Christian, and black metal is one of my favorite subgenres. the thing is, people have the idea that it would be a hindrance to their faith. if they feel that way, then fine, they just shouldn't listen to the music. it's usually just the crazy baptists who value their own rules that aren't exactly biblical, just very, very conservative. I just hate getting ridiculed for it..
@IdentifiantDeCatacombe8 жыл бұрын
I like black metal too (its the only metal I like besides doom) and i'm a religious/ spiritual person. Those people who are saying this hindrance their faith or does them bad or does bad to other people are no christians but superstitious conservative people who don't get the core of their religion, what it really means to be christian. they've just been told to think that way and made no way for their own. Thats not what christianity or any monotheistic religion is about...
@anonymouswitness38355 жыл бұрын
I like black metal too, but it's difficult for me to listen to the really Satanic stuff because my spirit is warring against the spirit of the music. Like, I have to be kind of detached to listen to it, so most of the time I just don't think it's worth it. "Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial"--you know?
@anonymouswitness38355 жыл бұрын
@An individual Haha I don't think of it as a negative/positive dichotomy, more of a lies/truth thing. Some of the Christian metal I listen to is pretty dark, but it's truth.
@anonymouswitness38355 жыл бұрын
@An individual I think of it like this - the Christian imaginative universe, in the end, has hope. But not every song encapsulates the entirety of the imaginative universe. The music is positive in that it has a positive effect on my spirit, ultimately pointing me towards truth, but it may not always be about positive things or be "uplifting" per say.

I don't really care for the distinction of 'white' metal, or 'unblack' metal. If it has the same depth and intensity of bands that don't believe in any religion, or are 'satanic', then why does it need yet another subgenre inside of a subgenre. I used to be a more practicing christian, now i'm more lax with it and don't have all those beliefs, and i still like the same bands. christian and non christian ones. i like it for the music. though honestly i don't dig bands that are real weirdly graphic with lyrics, like cannibal corpse or six feet under (and any other gross lyric'd band like that) cause it just isn't pleasing to me. but i like bands that are 'secular' and ones that are 'christian'. cause i think they sound good

However they are forgetting one aspect and this would distort their hatred. This is the fact that in the end of all, black metal is the true expression of the soul. The music speaks the truth in the way. And for a christian to explain it's true beliefs in the music, more power to them. I would rather see the truth in music then some bullshit they don't believe in for shock value. This is from a satanic point of view. Let a christian be true and express itself honestly rather then a Satanist being full of shit and faking it just for shock value.

Blackmetal Werewolf I totally respect and admire your outlook on music and religion. Especially the Metal scene. You're a great person I wouldn't mind sitting back and chillin' with. More people need to come to the understanding that we have. Educate.

❤To me Metal is all about the Dark, Churchy, Christian nature of the music. Christians do listen to Metal, and to me it's wierd to bump into some secular metalhead, because I wonder if they can really appreciate the music fully without the understanding and spiritual life that is a part of being Christian.❤

I find it hilarious how all these people getting their panties in a twist "BLACK METUL IZ NOT 4 CHRISTIANZ" ...even though most of them listen to slayer...the lead singer of which is a catholic.

Well I would have been shocked to learn that Christopher Bowes took himself seriously. Knew him from Alestorm, knew he was in a power metal band, but never listened to it. It's great, thanks!

White metal. Unblack metal. Those terms are ridiculous and this video terminology is highly inaccurate and outdated. MUSIC genres should not be named for their LYRICS. Yes, Horde started it with their "Hellig Ugsvart" (Holy Unblack) album, but that's no reason to coin an all new music term. I'm speaking as a current Christian black metal musician with multiple albums under my belt. I can't STAND those terms and I'm not alone. People don't call blues music with positive lyrics "unblues" or "oranges" - why do that with black metal? Metal is punny enough so whether the black metal band talks about Satan, Jesus, space, trees, mythology, etc. its all BLACK METAL, not something separate!

I think even Christians who listen black metal don't like that term "unblack metal "

OrationemOfficial I'm sorry but black metal is against Christians for the fact of being different in there on beliefs. I find it funny Christians always have to take music to there religion to accept it as good music most christian lyrics suck because your stuck in one direction.
@orationemofficial63467 жыл бұрын
Stuck in one direction could also be said of traditional black metal. Rebelling against religion is cool - but when the rebellion is against the rebels, the rebels don't like it. Isn't that ironic? I find it funny when people like you say Christians don't belong in black metal... but we're already here. We've been here for YEARS too, and we're staying. You or anyone else saying otherwise means NOTHING. I think it would be nice if one day, there would be an artistic appreciation in all facets of black metal. We're all on the same side regarding loving the sound of this genre you know...

In the 80's and 90's there was a church dedicated to the metal scene, It was called Sanctuary. There were others like the church of the New Order and Set Free Ministries that were active in that scene as well.

Antestor is such a great band. If you're looking for decent "black/unblack/extreme/blackened/death" metal bands, I highly recommend, Antestor. (Black metal) Mortification (the old stuff from the early 90's. Self-titled, Scrolls of the Megiloth, Post-momentary Affliction). (Death Metal) Frosthardr. (Black Metal) Slechtvalk. (Blackened Death Metal) Horde. (Black Metal) Becoming the Archetype. (Modern Death Metal) Thanks for being rational about this subject. I find it hilarious that the only two genres of music that catagorize themselves by lyrical content are extreme metal music and christian music. One is anti-Jesus and the other is pro-Jesus. I wish music was defined by sound rather than message. Down-tuned, aggressive with low growls? You might be death metal! Buzzsaw guitar tone, 3/4 time, blast beats, and shrill vocals? You might be black metal! Easy.

Great video and opinions. I think when it comes down it, a lot of christians who make metal were listening to sabbath, maiden, slayer etc growing up instead of hating on metal like other christians. These guys were probably ostracized by their communities and families for listening to the music just like any metalhead. And nowadays they are ostracized by both religious people and anti-religious metalheads. The metal sub-culture is about being a worldwide community that consists of all kinds of outsiders regardless of their ethnicity or beliefs. Its just better when people are accepted and there is unity.

This is a very interesting video. And I agree with you about how silly it is. I kind of outgrew religion. I think that spirituality is something that most people can relate to, while religion just separates people. Also as an European, religion this side of the pond is slightly different. I'd like to explain a couple of things. Unlike many people think, when Black Sabbath came out, it wasn't meant to be a satanic thing. The point was meant to create a band that worked out like a "horror movie". People paid to be scared, so a band about the stuff of horror movies could work out. Eventually when the Black Sabbath album came out, it was launched in the US in a party presided by Anton Levay, but the band did not know that. That was how they kind of became to be known as satanic. Afterwards, more and more bands started capitalizing on that image, and exploiting the "rebelious spirit" of every rebel kid who wanted to stick it to their parents. But for many people, once they start moving towards your thirties, that fight and the duality metal/religion kind of ceases to matter, it becomes silly and you move past it. In the end, there will always be dicks who will criticize one's choices, be it different kinds of christian, jew, muslim, hindu or even atheist. Music and religion must not be mixed. Whilst religion can countain music, and music can talk about religion, you must not need one in order to appreciate the other. Hope this makes sense. Nice boots by the way! Cheers and stay metal \m/

Have you ever listened to A Hill to Die Upon? They're a Christian blackened death metal band that gets compared a LOT to Behemoth. They do have some Christian inspired songs, but those lyrics are generally esoteric. A lot of their other songs come from literature and other mythologies. You might want to check out their song called Twin Heads of Vengeance. Super awesome stuff

Love this video as a Christian I don't call it unblack or white I just call it metal and the elitists will say "it doesn't sing about (insert topic) therefore it's not REALLY (metal genre) grow up seriously and more often than not people will say the music is great but don't like the message but when you point out the pegan or satan stuff in their music they'll claim it's "just music" then why can't that logic be applied to the other bands too?? Anyway great video🤘⚡🔥

I loved your open opinion. I'm a christian myself. I do not listen to bands that sing about Satan or dump on my religion but i listen to everything else. There are some low quality christian bands, but there are also some masterpeices (pretty much the same with normal metal).

I can't believe this hasn't been brought up, but what do you think of Deafheaven, or any "blackgaze" bands that add ethereal/ambient clean passages to black metal songs? I know they typically get a lot of shit from black metal purists.

You bring up really amazing and thought provoking topics. Open-minded music fans are great on both sides like the christen listens. Or when Black Sabbath sings about god, I get past that and just enjoy the music.

White metal is my favorite. I love old school sounding bands like Guardian and Bride and Stryper holds a special place in my heart. They don't take themselves too seriously and still tour. I love the excitement and light hearted feeling I get with white metal. I believe there is a piece of music for everyone, whatever background, creed, or personality. My personality is like an 80's partier that stumbled into church and stayed 😝

If you like the second album of gloryhammer, try the first one too :) it`s called "tales of the kingdom of five" or something like that. They made the whole album to tell a story about an evil wizard and a hero who tries to defeat him to save the country. Personaly I like the first one a little bit more, but the second album has some great songs as well, as you mentioned
