The whole album is amazing and yes a lot of the charm is the rawness of the sound.They recorded it in Keith Richards basement studio in his mansion in France and they were chasing a raw production style that was very roots music inspired by their Blues,Country and Rock n Roll influences.
@davescurry69
@davescurry69 Ай бұрын
To Be honest, they had already begun that with Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed. Not sure if they were chasing that sound, but as they were in the Nellcote basement with their mobile studio parked outside, it was the only sound they were going to get. And the sound is only on this album. It wasn't on Sticky Fingers and it was gone by Goat's Head Soup. Also, only half the album's songs were recorded at Nellcote. The other half were recorded at Sunset Studios in L.A, which is where they also mixed the album.

@@davescurry69 Yes 'Beggar's Banquet' was certainly a step in that direction with a more American roots music influence compared to their previous flirtatioo with Psychedelia and Brit Pop.I think 'exile' was the culmination of achieving that raw and gritty rootsy sound.They had a more relaxed vibe happening at Keith's house which helped set the mood for the laid back vibe that record has and the dirty sound.

The grove they hit is absolutely perfect for this song, which is one of their most overlooked talents. If you don't believe me, check out "Rip This Joint" or "Shine a Light" or "All Down the Line" or "Tory and Frayed"...Hell, just listen to the whole album, imho the record that best defines "Rock n' Roll"!!!

6:03 As your trying to figure out what it is they have, it is this. They have the groove. Bottom line, the Stones know how to groove in the spirit of the greatest black blues and soul artists that inspired them. Etta James, who toured with the Stones in 1978 said of the Stones "they got the black music thing down in the truest and purest sense" That's it. The Stones don't do technical mastery of their instruments like "rock" bands. They play rock n roll, which at its core is black music. Long live the Rolling Stones.

This is a terrific song. Raw and acoustic. They often do this one live on their small remote stage out in the middle of the floor audience. It really swings from such a platform. They have a knack for making a 40,000 seat venue feel ike a small club with how they scale everything up on the main stage. I have seen them 16 times between 1981-2019. So many great shows over the years! We used to say “The Beatles want to hold your hand; The Stones want to burn your town.” 🤣

Biz you hit the nail on the head on the Stones Secret sauce - dirty, gritty, edgy and just plain real! That’s why they are the greatest rock and roll band ever. For your next Stones sampling, I recommend All Down the Line from the same album. Keith Richards once said his two favorite songs to play live were Jumping Jack Flash and All Down the Line because they just picked up a head of steam and careened down the tracks 🤘

"Stray Cat Blues" a track off the 'Beggars Banquet' album released back in 1968 by 'The Stones' has a funky/bluesy vibe that might be worth checking out. "It was reported to have been said in the music industry the song "Stray Cat Blues" is a ("Sleazy Rocker"). At any rate, although the song is absolutely nasty, it's smokin' hot. 💋👠👧👧🎤🎸🎹🎷🥁🪘🔊🔥🔥☮🎧

The Stones at their Rollingest. A double album, and it’s perfect, by far my favorite. It’s barely-contained chaos that by some magic produces this beauty. Keith and Mick tried to have a musical idea ready every day to work on when the rest of the band got there about supper time, then they’d play all night. Country, blues, gospel, rock & roll, and various combinations of those. Easy for me to say, but I’d do the whole album.

I was always a Stones fan but I remember when this album came out, the critics panned it. Today it's considered one of their best. Go figure! Other songs to check out from Exile: Rocks Off (yes, that's what it's about!), Tumbling Dice, Torn and Frayed, Let It Loose, Shine a Light and the incredible Soul Survivor!

Yeah, when this album came out, I didn't get it - for about a month. "What the hell is this?" The sound was so gritty, lots of acoustic instrumentation, lyrics mumbled worse then ever, most of the songs were not pop-catchy. But out of a stubborn habit (since I'd spend the money on a double album), I kept listening - and then it all made sense - as genius, and part of a new direction in music.
@ohfour-seven6228
@ohfour-seven6228 Ай бұрын
@@davidhowe5415 I think a lot of that gritty sound is from recording in the dank basement of Keith Richard's house in the south of France using a mobile recording studio. Gritty is definitely what they came up with, and amazing!

Always a favourite to hear and to play. Was fascinated when I heard it on the radio when it came out at the chord substitution from standard major/minor for the key. A simple change, but it works beautifully, lends an ironic twist to the proceedings. Nobody does it quite like them. 😊🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊

Children's music? LOL. I was a kid when it came out. I remember hearing "Tumbling Dice" on the pop radio station my parents listened to, but that's about it. I didn't hear the other songs on it until I got older. "Sweet Virginia" is some of that "barnyard rock", at least until the sax solo. PS. The Stones did the overdubs and final mixes for the album in Los Angeles. They shot some film during that time that shows them standing at an intersection where the street sign reads a "200 E." below what looks like 3rd or maybe 5th Street -- which would put them at the intersection of 5th and Los Angeles, literally two blocks away from Main Street in Los Angeles circa 1973. Hence the album title and perhaps an explanation for the line about bitter fruit as they were in exile in California.
