There are so many fascinating plant stories out there I’d like to make more videos on them. Whether people like this stuff is another matter - but I’ve made it a goal to try to make more of what interest me! 🤷‍♂️🤣

There are a lot of Australian terrestrial orchids that have such a tight symbiotic relationship with mycos that they are practically impossible to cultivate. Some are confined to growing in a truly tiny area, we're talking less than 2 square km, because that is the only place their specific host myco exists. And efforts to cultivate some of these mycos has proven difficult because they require very specific soil conditions. If the soil parameters go outside a certain range (pH, moisture level) even a little for any length of time they just die. It is honestly amazing that they even still exist.

Fascinating. And frequently Australia where these things occur. The mind boggles at the scale of time these relationships must have taken to develop. Humans just aren’t designed to comprehend such vast periods.

Fascinating, i'd like to see a flower because this makes no logical sense. There's more?😮 I know about the ghost pipes because they grow around here and people think they're a mushroom but they're a plant with no chlorophyll.

Yeah me too. I guess the researchers turned up at the wrong time of the season. 🤷‍♂️

Cast iron plants flower underground they are a purple/pinky colour.

I’ve never grown one, but after a quick Google, everything I could find says they flower from the base, not underground. Unless you can give me a link that says differently? Whereas the entirety of the flower and the fruit in the case of this newly discovered plant resides beneath the surface of the soil.

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I noticed it last month when repotting the flowers don't surface they are a couple of inches beneath the surface. I googled it cause I wanted to know what I was looking at and remember reading something about spidermites are a pollinator.

It looks to me from sources I’ve found that they’re one of those that flower very close to the surface so that they may be covered by leaf litter. But it also looks like it’s not really known what pollinates them. Suggestions are fungus gnats, slugs and other very small flies but nobody really knows. Plants are full of surprises.
