In this video, I am showing you how to upgrade the SSD and RAM for a ThinkPad P1 / X1 Extreme, they share the same chassis.

Thanks...seriously considering buying one of these. Six cores or eight cores, not sure. I'll be crunching HD videos for KZfaq so I think 16 gigs might be enough. But it's nice to see how easy it is to add another stick. Only $56 from Crucial. With that many cores and a fast SSD, I should be able to render a 10-minute HD clip pretty quickly. Might not need 32 gigs. Thanks again...

Thanks for the video! Very nice and straight to the point. When I add an SSD or RAM, do I need to do anything with the bios or battery before I install them? I have read in some other places that it might be necessary. Is that true?

You only need to install the system to the new drive. No BIOS or battery mods needed.

I have that listed in the video description, you can find them on Amazon. If you have a Xeon processor, you can use ECC RAM if needed

how many SSD slots it has. Leveno told me p1 gen3_x1 extreme have 4 SSD slots

Hi, Can you specify the exact screw driver sizes you used for the SSD screws ? These are different from the bottom cover ones. The hardware guide does not specifically mention the specs for these.

The missing screw thing for additional SSD was new to me. Any advice where to find one? Is it similar to the standard screws of pc‘s?

Both Amazon and Newegg should have them, but they can be a bit pricy. As this is a very short and small screw, I doubt that it's standard for any desktop pc's.

I just bought a P1 Gen 2 (512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe Opal2) and would like to know what advantages you see to using the 970 Evo or 970 Evo Plus relative to the stock SSD.

For everyday use, the stock is good enough. I would say there's not much difference between the two drives unless you use the Samsung 970 pro to get higher sustainable speed.

Hi I am planning to upgrade my X1 gen 2 that I recently bought. Just one quick question. Would it be okay if I leave the blue plastic cover underneath SSD just like you did in this video? I watched other videos, and some mentioned that the plastic thing can lead to thermal issues and should be removed.

The blue thing you are referring to here is actually a thermal pad, it helps keep the drive cool.

Random Fixes oh I see. I saw that the plastic thing people recommended to get rid of is a yellow one. I guess the yellow one is just a piece of plastic that causes thermal issues and the blue one functions differently. Thank you for your reply.

Hello, I installed the 970EVO+ while leaving the stock ssd in place. I then installed Ubuntu onto the 970EVO+, however it doesn't recognize the Wi-Fi adapter when I boot Ubuntu with 970EVO+. My plan was to run Windows on the stock ssd and Ubuntu on 970EVO. Any advice on 'No Wi-Fi adapter found' error message? I am using Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2. Thank you

I think it's most likely caused by driver issues. Some googling for the driver issue might give you the answer.

Same machine and have one question.....b4 replacing ram and ssd, do i need to unplug the battery first? Or directly pull ram or ssd out ?

As long as you power off the laptop, you should be good. Just don't leave any metal tools or screws on the PCB.

Hi! Great video mate. I just bought an extra 16GB RAM to upgrade my P1 Gen 2 to 32GB. After installing the second RAM, will I need to do anything else? Or will the computer automatically just run normally with the extra RAM installed?

It will probably takes a few seconds longer to for the first boot after you install the ram. Other than that, the computer should see it automatically.

To be safe, you might want to unplug the battery. You can also do the job carefully without unplugging it. Just keep the screw driver or any other conductive material away from the PCB.

Just temporarily disable the battery in the BIOS like Lenovo themselves show in any laptop disassembly video. Enter key while booting, F1 to access BIOS, select Config tab, select Power, select Yes to confirm. Battery will resume functioning when power adapter is plugged in again.
