I'm taking my empty 23.7 Ice Mountain water bottles, rinsing and drying in sun light, soak the tops in hot, soapy water, rinsing, drying in the sun. I'm going to refill them with purified water. Get a few good boxes you can stack. If water goes out for days, I plan to allow 4 bottles to shower with every 3 days. To get warm water, if its summer, put a pale or gallon bottles of water in the back seat of car or SUV. It's like an oven and will heat water for dishes for showering.

Good reminders. I am restocking the teas I used over the winter. I have stocked canned chicken and ham for soups and casseroles but also have pork, beef, tuna and salmon for the nutrients and variety. I use corned beef hash to make stuffed cabbage, roast beef or sausage hash to make stuffed peppers. If worse comes to worse just a bowl of cooked pasta and pasta sauce will fill your belly and provide nutrition.

I am so glad that I have added and added to my supplies (of all kinds) slowly over the last few years. I never could be with out extra, and now, who knows how much I may need? I never leave a grocery store or Dollar Tree without on kind of protein, even if it is only a can of herring or tuna, a bag of beans,or quinoa, a can of soup, whatever, and an extra can of vegs, or fruit, let alone the big stock-ups on all things.

I just picked up a couple vanilla cake mixes and Mother's canned cherry pie filling at Dollar Tree for a coffee cake recipe I'll make for a sweet treat. I like this recipe I found on You Tube (great rating) because it doesn't require butter, but it does ask for 3 eggs. It calls for sour cream but you can substitute with Greek Yogurt. It makes a large 12 x 17 pan. If there's not a lot of cherries in the pie filling I'll mix in some of my canned blueberries. Over the past couple years I've stocked up on vanilla and almond extract. So happy I did. Most of us like an occasional treat that's easy to make, will go a long way and is inexpensive.

One tip - watch the foods from any store but particularly Dollar Tree. Look at the label, many of the name brands they sell say made with bioengineered ingredients even name bradn cake mixes and others. If you want to avoid the GMO foods, important to keep a watch on what you are buying. Some of their products are grown or handled overseas as well and right now the government doesn't seem to be checking incoming foods from overseas to know if they were safely grown or processed.

I used to believe fruits and vegetables were essential but the last year has shown me how wrong I was. I have been doing a carnivore diet for that year, which is animal products only. Not only have I lost a hundred lbs, I am the healthiest I have been in decades and I am seventy three. My diabetes, kidney disease, and cardiac issues have gone into remission. Great advice about the beans. And be sure to keep the liquid in your jar, it probably has far more nutrients and less salt or sugar than the commercially canned products. The way things go we never know if or when the power can be turned off so good to have food that is ready to eat in your jars.

Happy to see you talking more about canned meat/fish. We see vegetables and cereals most of the time, not many animal products that are shelf stable for a long time. I am trying to move near the Belgian border and I will see what they have available over there. If all goes well I'll have a more permanent place with enough space to finally set up a proper pantry. Last week I added some ancient grains and pseudo grains and am researching how to use them. They are more expensive but have so much good nutrition plus some, such as amaranth, teff and quinoa are complete proteins and many are gluten free. I can't store as much quantity of them as rice and beans because they are more expensive, but I think it will be good to have some for variety and the nutrients. I am not vegan but have been watching videos put out by vegans for things like flat bread made just from red lentils and water or another from sweet potatoes and flour. I want to learn how to make the Ethiopian flat bread injera made from teff. It is good to learn new skills.

Been a prepper for decades, (must be getting old) and have bought,stored,freeze dried packaged foods, but actually ate them, most brands most selection’s my personal preference for taste and nutrition are as follows in best to worst……1st is peak foods (by far taste better than anything out there, 2nd would be a close is mountain house, the rest are way down the list for taste and quality, this is my take but you can look on you tube at the comparison between brands and most fit in my category. When you are hungry almost anything is acceptable, but if satisfying you own taste buds is number one then stock up on the ones you prefer. AG keep up the great ideas.

Rotating your preps needs to be a job1, it saves money, by reducing the chances of spoilage and over buying,it has taken myself years to formulate a safe system and one that is easy to use. Let me use as an example a mainstay for my 1year best by date items….that being hormel completes, they have a nice selection, easy to store (no refrigeration needed) and have a most a year and half out best by date……I like to buy them at the rate of five to six cases (6 or 7 in a case) per month… I eat them daily and the variety is currently about 12 choices used to be more but like most manufacturers hormel has cut back on selection. I buy at various grocery stores or on Amazon, Amazon seems to supply the best selections which normally have at least a one year Best Buy date. The benefit of the completes meals is that they take up little space even in cases I like to rotate using a 500 meal minimum that fits in a space 4’ by 4’ by 6’…I have my canned goods, bulk items, flour sugar etc and freezedried to round out selections. But completes are my 1st consideration ease of use, storage friendly, good food selection and nutrition make it a standout. Hope this information helps people out there to give them some insights. Blessings

Alessi makes a mix in a pouch with Farro (I didn't know what that was. It's wheat berries.) and they mixed it with beets and spinach. Just add it to boiling water (butter optional, and I added olive oil) and simmer for 20 minutes. Yummy! If you mix Swiss Miss peppermint hot cocoa mix with Gold Medal instant espresso you get (almost) a Caribou Coffee Mint Condition Mocha, add some marshmallows instead of the whipped cream and you're set! I'm almost done with some canned foods that I forgot about and are only a month expired. Everything is fine so far. Our power went out this past weekend and I worried about some cinnamon buns that were frozen. It came back on in two hours, but I took half the buns out, let them thaw, rise and baked them. I put the rest of the buns back in the freezer, but in a greased pan ready to take out and thaw, let rise and bake later if it happens again. I'm slowly eating my frozen foods too because I don't want freezer burn or waste with possible power outages. When in doubt, make ice cubes and when done put them in a covered bucket in the freezer. If the power goes out you will have ice water. If you have empty freezer containers, fill them with water to freeze for larger blocks of ice. This will prolong your "ice box" storage in an emergency...and you'll have more water... If you are like me and buy things reduced for quick sale, often they are near the expiration date. I have tweaked that habit to be for things I would like to try but don't know if I would like and those things which are shelf stable ready to eat. The Farro was one item. It makes too much for one person, so I have leftovers and freeze it in portions. All you have to do is thaw it to eat it. The ready to eat pouches usually freeze well too if they are near their expiration date. I also have taken to buying the chicken and veggie broth in boxes which also freeze well...more liquid for soups and stews if there is no water and more savings for buying it on sale. No can opener needed.

Life gets busy. It is so easy to over look old cans of food we need to use. Especially if you have a small pantry and have to pull from various locations around the house. I often come home with a load of groceries and try to group them with like items, but don't always get around to keeping them rotated so I can use the oldest ones first. So twice a year I will write dates on foods and move the old ones to the front or main pantry. Then if I find some old ones I really really need to use. Then I'll plan meals to get them used up soon. It also helps me realize that maybe I should buy less of something or more of something else that I use more of.

The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

I don't like sardines or salmon, but I love most other seafoods. Another item most people don't think about is clothing including shoes, boots and underwear. Before I retired a few years ago, I bought some pants in the next size larger than I have worn for years. About a year ago, my pants I have been wearing for years no longer fit, so I had to dig my larger pants out of totes I had stored them in. My shirt size did not change. I have worn the next size larger shirts for years because I did not like tight fitting shirts. Buy "Sturdy" clothes, extra pairs of sturdy shoes and boots. Also stock up socks and underwear. When SHTF you won't be able to buy them anymore. I feel sorry for folks that have children that grow out of their clothes often. Keep Prepping my friends.

Could the nido be bagged dry and put in the freezer?

Absolutely or you can seal it in a mylar bag

AG, When you repackage the Nido into vacuum sealed glass jars, how long will it last? If anyone has tips on using dehydrated foods, I'd love to see ideas. I don't know how to rehydrate them or cook with them and would love to learn a new thing.

If your buying commercially dehydrated foods they give instructions on the can on how to reconstitute. You can use them just as you would use canned vegetables.

So far, I've used Nido 5 months past date. I keep extending use and continuing to try it. It's whole milk powder, so the fat in it I know won't last as long, but still a really good shelf life.

If you Google baking powder substitutes they have several. I'm presently using baking powder that is a year from the bb date on container . And my biscuits are rising fine. Hope this he

Would vacuum canning Nido in several pint jars extend its shelf life? I have done so with nonfat powdered milk, thinking it will store long term. But I am not familiar with Nido product. It sounds like it is more palatable than what I have! Thank you, AG

Vacuum sealing won't actually extend the shelf life, but you should get the same shelf life as the original container. I'm currently using Nido dry milk that's a year past it's best by date and it's fine.

Good question. I have 4 Nido that BBD is 2023. It is whole milk, so not sure if will extend life as it is in aluminum container.

Yes now that dollar tree is not a true dollar tree anymore. It was ok going to a $1.25 because every thing in the store was $1.25 But now its turning into just a bargain store like the 99c store did a few years back and many of them are going to be closing down. 😨 Prices have not slowed down from going up and up every time you go to the store! I still go to dollar tree and dollar general for their $1 items because thats the cheapest i can find. But i have to slow down my spending now. Cause it really adds up. And no relief in sight!

I agree. Also dollar general has the $5 off $25 coupon for Saturdays so those dollar items discount to 80¢!

Our dollar trees kept getting worse for being stocked with essentials food items. They do stock a full aisle of soda, chips, cookies and so forth but even the dried beans are much fewer and things like bottled water or boxed milk is hit and miss. We never buy the canned vegetables at DT anymore, we found that they are often on sale at our Kroger and a lot cheaper. The DT stores by us have almost no garden seeds now, so anyone who waited to get any will probably not have much to pick from or will have to buy the higher priced seed at places like Home Depot. We all just need to keep watching and doing smart shopping as we can!

The Nido looks expensive on the shelf, but it reconstitutes to about 13 gallons. At $4/gal for liquid milk, a $20-25 container of Nido turns into a bargain.

How long do grains last?
@leopardwoman38
@leopardwoman38 2 ай бұрын
Whole grains such as wheat were found in King Tuts tomb, and were fine. Ground wheat goes rancid in a couple of years or so. White rice lasts for 20-30 years. Brown rice has oils in it so does not last as long, so maybe 5 years. Oats last 20-30 years. The flavored packets do not last nearly as long.

Very true! Not only that, but they are very clever and don't tell you that they actually use mostly non organic fruits and vegetables, so you could be getting produce that has concentrated pesticides! Out of curisoity when they first started running those ads, my husband called and asked if the produce was clean and organic, the answer was no but it was 'high quality'. He asked if they add dried soybean meal to their mixes and they said yes. Heard that they hire actors or pay people to give their testimonies. They can't say it made them healthier or reversed a condition, listen carefully to how they said it, just say they like it and they think they feel better. And they are careful not to say it they needed it because they didn't eat right or had a disease or condition because of nutritional deficiencies, they always say they take it as an easy way out of eating fresh produce.
