Changing out upper and lower ball joints on a Chevy 1500 1996 work truck. I left the crooked start of the press in the video because it happens all too often with that type of control arm.

If you need any help on replacing the idler arm , I've got a step by step video tutorial. It may help you or others learn. It's a 12 minute clip. As long as we continue to show and explain these tho vs we can continue to teach others and younger generations. Thanks for sharing your video man. Best of luck and stay blessed

I like the idea of just moving the whole spindle together as one part versus taking everything apart.

Lol I do do it at my own risk. Called if the truck falls it lands on my garage floor with me still foot to 2 feet away from it. I'm always gonna work on my vehicles I have myself if I can. I love doing it. Knowing I accomplished something makes me happy.

This looks easy enough, my lower ball joint fell apart this morning. I have all the tools except the press, I will have to rent that. Thanks for the video!

Just did one of these today at work. What a PITA. I think I got 4 hours into one side alone. The upper rivets would not come out after grinding the upper rivet heads flush. Then I removed the upper control arm and grinded the heads off the other side, then after 30-40 mins. of beating the old upper ball joint was off. The lower wouldn't pop out of the knuckle, then after beating and prying I got the knuckle hub off (mine was 4x4) and then I tried pressing off the lower ball joint but it wouldn't go. Tons of rust penetrate and heat later it popped out.

Should have used a pickle fork to get it off.

I just did this on my 2wd s10, my top rivets came off with a air hammer chisel/punch real easy and the bottom came out by putting a deep well socket on it and beating it with a 6lb hammer 30-40 times. I didn't have too much trouble getting the hub off the top was already loose but the bottom took heat and the air hammer.

I will sometimes just lightly tap the corner of the press with my deadblow and she realigns with less stress and you dont force it. especially when she is goin crooked. You just blew it in with the big gun ,.LOL Great Vid.

did the upper and lower ball joints on my 89 silverado last year. I been a mechanic for 20+ years. on the uppers i would usually use a angle grinder or a air cut off wheel then use a punch to knock the rest of the rivot out. found with experimenting though that using an air powered hammer works fastest and best for me, just a few seconds per rivot then uses a hammer and punch and ur done, on the lowers, go rent or buy a ball joint press if you dont have one.

I have the same exact truck... white 1996 C1500 WT and have thought about attempting this after replacing the tie rod ends, sway bar links and shocks. Yet, I don't know, I just have a feeling I will open a can of worms. Getting them out and especially back in looks like a beast.

Very informative video. I just changed my uppers and lowers on my 1990 Chevy truck very similar to the one in this video. My lower ball joint on the drivers side was comming out of the control arm and I had to replace it ASAP. Luckily the control arm was ok, and the new lower ball joint pressed in very tight. I think that the lower ball joint pressed out when I spun out one winter and slammed into the ditch, no body damage, but I think that's when the ball joint popped out of the arm.

does anyone know torque spec for castle nuts on an '86 c10 2wd 305? I am at the point where im grinding the rivets out and need to pick up a pickle fork. the bottom joint slipped right off the knuckle lower, but will need pickle fork to seperate upper ball from knuckle and both ball joints from control arms. I'm saving my ol' lady alot of money and getting some nice tools in exchange. already got a husky 4 piece air tool set and the air chisel is better at removing the rivets than grinding. impact ain't bad either. next we will be fixing windows, dash, bench seat, rust on body, dents and then backyard spraying it with plasti-dip. then goes a leveling kit, maybe body lift, then on go the 24" IIcraves, low pros, and 1800w kenwood pushing 2x12" alpine type r's with airplay capable bluetooth system, wired through rear with 1 tb hard drive full of our favorite music, at some point we may put in a cpu and run monitors...
@allenmckinney953310 жыл бұрын
Don't worry too much about exact torque but don't use the Chinese bolts that come with it, they will break like plastic. It's better to go and get some 1/4-20 1" long grade 8 bolts with locking nuts and just snug them down tight.

@@briantruck2284 I think your way better off with the economy grade parts store stuff than anything from the cheap websites. I thought I was saving money buying from 1A, $150 for all 4 ball joints, tierods and sway bar links. I had to replace everything but the sway bar links. Both lower ball joints popped out, destroying the tierods, luckly one happend pulling into my driveway, the other in a busy roundabout.

Please, please help!!! We were in an accident, the car hit our right front tire and above our right front tire. At the time, the body shop said the "alignment was fine" and replaced the tire. This was in October. This month, there is a "squelching" sound when I turn the steering wheel and a "squelching" sound (like a dog toy), when we go over bumps or hit potholes. I was told by Ford that it was the suspension. A small garage we went to, told me that "it was probably the tie rods" and he said he would put a small hole in the "boot" and inserted a straw and filled it with lubricant. I told him I did not want this, but he did it anyway. It did not make the noise go away, but now I am concerned about what damage this may do---after the fact, I did some more reading and I found out this is not good at all. He also told me my tie rod was bad, and showed me how the front wheel would not move. I found out that this is a good thing for the wheel not to have a lot of play. Can you respond about all of this, please????

@willautotech016 жыл бұрын
When you force a lower control arm balljoint on that material of control arm what it'll do is stretch the hole and then the balljoint will fit loose and defeat it's purpose. You would have to tap it back out and get it straight as soon as you see it going crooked. And also work the press in your favor.
@Oldsmob4556 жыл бұрын
The finished product was anything but loose. Getting a perfectly straight press is next to impossible. Good luck with your ball joint presses.
