Except someone ruined the woodwork by painting it. It would be an enormous task removing the paint.

@@brushcreek42 painted woodwork is appropriate for the time period. It has most likely been painted since being built.

@@tamianderson3977 If the wood is pine it probably was meant to be painted. If it's walnut, cherry or mahogany it definitely was not meant to be painted.

@@brushcreek42 Actually, it would have been painted, originally! For a house of this period, they’d use milk paint. Oxblood red was very common. The early settlers wanted colour in their homes, especially if they were from a Northern climate where the winters were long and over caste. The bright colours cheered them up. Secondly, having things painted was a trend. Everybody did it. Thirdly, if you buy an old cupboard with the original paint and strip it, you’ve automatically dropped the value of the piece, dramatically! If you can find a really old piece with the original paint, it has way more value than if it was stripped. Those days( 70’s- 80’s) when everyone and his brother was stripping furniture down to the plain wood are over. People now realize the beauty of historical colours. Hundreds of paint companies now specialize in historical colours. I don’t really like the colours these people used, especially the dark and light green which would never have existed back then. It’s a personal choice, of course, but l love the historical colours. Any pioneer village that you go to will feature houses with woodwork and walls painted in original colours.

Normally I prefer to see the woodwork but this was painted so beautifully it is stunning.

And built by craftsmen who were mostly dead and gone a half-century before the Civil War. Wow, the leaded glass windows and the unbelievable woodwork that only the very rich can afford, nowadays. But I could just strangle the people who paint over beautiful, natural wood ceilings, moldings, shelves and staircases.

@@jerrydiver1 Chances are that woodwork was painted from its very beginning. Painted woodwork was something that was for the rich/well to do.

These federal style homes are absolutely beautiful and I love marveling at them myself. However, the issue is these homes go WAY beyond basic restoration. Structural or foundation issues usually are the culprit for why these magnificent homes lay abandon and buyers back out altogether. My family owns a historic federal home(thats actually a historic landmark) built on 1780 that had WAY less damage than this They sunk more money into bringing that home up to code over the cost of buying a brand new one. While I appreciated their (and my own) love for historical homes, I had to question how financially sound this venture was and wouldn't wish that financial headache upon anyone. I don't mean to sound negative here. But, unless you're willing to sink in some serious cash and have a disposable income, these places are basically money pits.. That home took probably took tens of thousands of dollars to restore. The structure alone (lifting and repouring foundation, restoring eroded bricks,reinforcing) I don't even want to know what my dad spent on restoring the interior. If you have that income, go for it. I'm just simply implying neglected homes usually need more than a coat of paint and love. It takes some serious $$$$.

I live near the Dickenson mansion in Delaware, and the same exact colors are used throughout that estate. The colors are historically correct. Someone was restoring this house. What a profound shame.

Was thinking the same thing about that horrific color but was calling it butterscotch in my mind. LOL

Floor slots for the central heating?

Lindy Pierce he walked through the whole house, no furnace anywhere and only a crawl space under the house no room for any kind of hot air furnace or boiler for Heat. That’s why every room has a fireplace even that bathroom upstairs has fireplace

@@horseyhorselips3501 I’m pretty sure I saw some ductwork under the house when he was filming from the outside and there was a opening in the foundation. Might have been heat pump somewhere outside that we didn’t see.

@@horseyhorselips3501 Well, yes, in the timeframe the home was built they didn’t put in central heat. But at some point it was obviously added and the slots were the “registers” where the heat came out. There are the ones in the floor and the ones at the base of the staircase (on the side) to heat the front hall.

@@lindypierce3766 .... my thought was that they were for cool air from underneath the house to come in as its cooler under the house and back then it was built there was no air cooling system. Just my thought... and during colder weather thay put rugs over those spots.

T L Smith. I totally agree with you on the bathroom catastrophe.!!! I would also have researched historical colours for the time period. The people had the right idea, just weren’t as colour savvy as someone in the know would be. In the light and dark green room, those colours wouldn’t have existed.

The colors chosen were to re create milk paint of the 1800's This place has not been empty for that long

Aimee, I understand where you come from I prefer an all natural look. But we must remember but this is a historical home so to keep it in the correct time. You must use the materials that they used. But during the era that this home was built and the particular Decor of the woodwork the painting is what was done back then. Mainly due to the fact they didn't know what polyurethane was. All they had access to was paint and whitewash.
